Okay, please be patient with me because this might be a bit lengthy...

My daughter and I are going to Disney in December with some friends. We're leaving behind my husband and other children. We will be there December 10-19 and are staying onsite. We are going with free dining, but we will upgrade our tickets to AP when we arrive. My tentative plan is to go back January 27-February 5 with the rest of the family. We would also be staying onsite for this trip. The rest of my family wouldn't have AP (we'd buy regular tickets through our resort ressie and upgrade when we got there again), but my daughter and I would. I'm trying to figure out how to work our FP then. Because the trips are close together (only 48 days apart), I will have missed our window to book FP for the January trip for my daughter and me because we won't have AP yet. I understand that since we will be staying onsite we will be able to take advantage of the 60+ day booking window, but since we won't have the AP until our December trip, this is a problem. My question is: Is there any way to work this out? Is it possible to attach tickets for us to our January ressie, book FP on them (so we book our FP with the rest of the family), transfer the FP to our AP in December, and then take the tickets off our package? I hope this made sense, and thank you so much for any help!

Everyone on a package must have the same tickets. Since you don’t need tickets, you’ll have to book a room-only reservation and buy tickets separately for the rest of your family. Separate tickets are non-refundable. Unless you want to hold on to some extra tickets for a year or longer, just wait until you upgrade to book FP+. You’ll still be way ahead of the offsite folks.

You can make it work, but it's a little complicated and could put your room reservation in jeopardy. This is what you could do:

1) Book your January trip as a room/ticket package.
2) Book your January FP+ at 60 days prior
3) After you have upgraded your AP's in December, book a room-only for January (this is where it gets tricky as your original room may no longer be available. Do look for AP room discounts as you are now an AP holder), purchase tickets (or AP's) for the rest of your family, link those tickets to MDE and then cancel the January room/ticket package (do this prior to final balance being due).
4) When you cancel the package, as long as you have valid ticket media attached to everyone in your MDE account, the FP+ you made at 60 days prior won't go away.

If you were planning on doing a dining plan in January, book a room/ticket/dining package and simply ask that they remove the tickets from the package (after you've purchased and linked separate tickets or AP's for your family) so you have a "ticketless package". Again, ask for AP discounts on the room. Hope that makes sense.

Alternatively, and within DIS policy of not discussing booking and canceling rooms to benefit in booking FPs in advance, you can call and reduce your package tickets to the minimum about of park days that you need to qualify for Free Dining.

Purchase your AP vouchers now and link them to you two.

As soon as you arrive at WDW in December, activate your APs and then reassign your package tickets to a fake person-Profile and they’ll be safely saved there.

Use those saved tickets for a future trip or use them to renew your future AP.
