Annual Pass / FP+ Timing question

I will be buying my son an Annual Pass to use on our trip early in May. If I purchase the Pass early, will I be sent a voucher that needs to be exchanged for the real pass or will it be the actual pass that is sent? Also...if I buy him the Pass 60+ days before our trip, will I be able to make FP+s for our stay or will that only be allowed after I activate the voucher....if it is a voucher? Sorry to be so confusing. But grateful for responses.

They will give you a confirmation number. Enter the confirmation number into your MDX account and assign it to your son (or onto his account if he has his own) and you or he will be able to make FPs at the appointed time (60 days if you are staying onsite, 30 if you are not). You don't receive a paper voucher. When you arrive at WDW take the confirmation number and your son to a guest relations or ticket window to activate his pass. (If your son is a minor I don't think he will need an ID but if he is an adult he will need to present an ID.)

Received Vouches in the mail about a week after I ordered and entered the confirmation number online. Set up Fast Passes, then upon arrival stopped at guest services and activated them and received our passholder discount cards. We were asked for IDs (she's 18)

I didn't get an actual voucher...I think if you set it up as Will Call all you need is the confirmation number.

Does the start date of the AP "activate" the first day you use it or when you purchase it?

Not exactly.
When you choose to actually USE the AP is irrelevant.

Your AP becomes active on the day that you actually pick up your AP at a Guest Relations.

Of course, many guests DO use their AP right after they pick it up, but if they don't go into a park for a day or two or more after picking it up... the AP will still start counting down it's year of validity from the day that you pick it up.
