annoying dog next door

Thanks for all the comments. I called my vet and asked his advice. He said if I get the ultrasonic birdhouse it will bother my dog too. My DH and I have discussed it and over spring break when they are out of town my kids and I will try to make friends with him. The neighbors have told me not to give the dog treats, but my vet says maybe get a busy toy for the dog that he has to work for the reward would be good. I am willing to try anything. I may also get a hand held ultra sonic device that I can use when my dog is in the house. I sounds like many of us are in the same boat with dog problems. At least I am in good company!:rotfl:

The making friends thing might be good, if the dog is barking to "warn" its people that strangers are about. But at least in our case, the neighbors' St Bernard knows us and loves us...she is barking because she is clearly lonely. She is put out constantly, and barks at any person or animal she sees. She has even torn out the bottom of our fence and gotten UNDER it, and come to our back door! (Sad, destructive, and dd is PETRIFIED of dogs.)

So making friends is worth a try, but won't cure loneliness. You know, that plaintive barking at gate or door, or watching every window for a human face to appear.:sad2:

Good luck with the dog neighbor. Some dogs just bark a lot when they are outside, so even if he stops barking at you because you make friends, it does not mean that he will stop barking while tied outside. Why some people have a dog is beyond me. They buy one and then tie it outside. :confused3

I've been on the other side of this when we had a beagle in our condo. We rescued the dog from my in-laws (whole other story ). Like, basset hounds, beagles are very vocal. We tried the citrunella collar which worked until she got used to the taste. Eventually, the electric one worked...and then we moved to a house in a private area.

Could you give the dog a treat when you go outside? Maybe that will calm her. I wouldn't hurt the dog as some people have crazily suggested. If nothing else works, then it's time to go with animal control.
