annoying dog next door

I would NEVER do anything physical to someone else dog. That is just asking for problems. My best advice is just ignore it. You yelling and it is of course going to make it bark.

Seriously? Have you tried to ignore a barking/howling Basset Hound? Obviously they are at their wits end. If the neighbor doesn't want them to use that type of device on their dog then they should control it themselves. They are not doing that so it is up to the OP to take matters in to her own hands.

Yes, Dogs barks it's annoying, I still wouldn't do anything physical to the dog. If someone physical touched my dog I would be barking at them.

Technically they wouldn't be touching the dog. Also, hopefully you keep your dog quiet and realize when it is annoying and disrupting to others. Apparently the OP's neighbors don't know or don't care. Either way it is now up to the OP to take care of the problem.

I disagree. This dog isn't running lose or being vicious it's in it's yard being a dog.

My neighbors have 2 horrible German Shepherds....sadly they leave these dogs out hours on end. They bark continuously.

I bought one of those bark deterrents disguised as a bird feeder...and it really did not work at all for us.

We have a pattern going....they annoy me....I talk to the neighbors...they control it for about 2 weeks....and then the cycle continues.

We were raised that you don't leave your dogs outside barking continuously and to respect your neighbors....

When they are at the worst...I stick out my head and yell SHUT UP...they usually get the hint and call them in. But it makes me sad that I even have to do that.

The dog isn't in the yard being a dog, it is being neglected and not properly socialized by its owner and thus ruining the quality of life of those around them.

I would talk to the neighbours and if they won't take action, I would call animal control, the police or whoever else can help you find a solution to this.

It looks like I'm disagreeing with myself.

If you have already talked to your neighbor and they have done nothing to stop their dogs behaviour or brought the dog in when they see you outside, then it's time to call animal control. I am sure that you are not the only neighbor that this dog is annoying. Hound dogs have a bark you cannot ignore.

I would not worry about your neighbor being annoyed by you calling animal control. If you give them a chance to correct this first, then they cannot complain. There should be regulations on dogs barking or noise control. We have them where I live. We have 3 dogs. Our two, plus my daughter's dog. When they go outside, sometimes they get carried away with the barking and I either make them stop or bring them in.

Thanks for all the support and advice. I still don't know what to do. I didn't find any ultra sonic devices at the store so I may order one online. As for the dog just being a dog some of that is true, but he is ignored and the neighbors don't care.
I went to a party at their house once and the dog was barking a lot. The lady said "one day I am afraid I will come home and "I" will have cut out his voice box. HAhahaha." She had a good laugh. I did not! I would not hurt the dog, but it just shows that they know the dog is a problem. The husband has even told us to spray the dog with a hose if he bothers us. Problem!! It's their dog, they should do something.
They've had the dog 2 years and still barks at us like we are strangers. I may just have to go to the police. I do believe we have an ordinance. It is time to check on it.

Up until 2 weeks ago, we were the annoying neighbours! We thought we were doing a good job bringing the dogs in as soon as they would bark, but since they went in and out half a dozen times in an evening, I guess that minute of barking each time added up to a lot of frustration for our neighbours. Too bad they didn't just knock on the door and tell us, they waited until they were really pissed off (read:hungover) and yelled at my husband across the fence.

Anyway, we bought them each the citronella spray collars and they are amazing! It is incredible how quickly they have been trained with the collars. (We tried the ultrasonic collar on one of the dogs in the summer, but it didn't work). They literally haven't barked in two weeks. The brand we bought is Guardian (by PetSafe), and they are about $100. each. Expensive, but well worth it in my opinion. Too bad the neighbour was such a jerk about it. Now I will be more inclined to call and complain when his music is shaking the windows in our house at midnight.

Amazon.com has hand-held bark deterrents. Apparently the birdhouses get set off by talking, music, car doors, etc. It seems like the manual one would be better. They're only $13.xx, too.

Hounds BAY. It is singly the most annoying sound I have ever heard in my life. It's disturbing the OP's life, that's not cool. I like the idea of a hose.. water isn't going to hurt the dog. My neighbors actually gave us a water gun to shoot at their dogs when they yapped at us.. it worked well.

People complain about our dogs barking, we have one that's got some hound in him and the other is a Doxie, they bark but not when we are home, at least not much. I like that ultrasonic thing, that might work!
All the neighbors around us having loud barking dogs too, we NEVER complain about their dogs but they complain about ours. AC has come to our house a time or two, they look around, see the dogs are not mistreated and leave. that's it, they don't do anything, our dogs bark during the day and are inside at night and don't bark, the other neighbors dogs are outside barking at midnight....the AC people just roll their eyes and apologize for bothering us. But I do wish we could get our dogs to stop barking completely so I just might get that thing from Amazon. The citronella collars DO work our "big" dog (he's about 45 lbs) has one, when it's on him he never barks but since the little dog doesn't have one we haven't used it in a while. We don't want him to get sprayed when she barks.
OP I do want to say that if my neighbor gave me an anti bark collar I would ONLY use it if it was a citronella, no way would I use one that gives shocks. :) good luck, I hope you get it worked out.

We've got a collie and a beagle next door. The collie barks incessantly when it's outside. I've talked to the neighbors and it will get better for a couple of weeks and then goes right back to constant, prolonged barking.

My husband was working in the yard, the dog was barking at him and he threw a metal garbage can lid on the patio. Dog stopped barking. Now he keeps the lid next to him when he's on the patio. Works like a charm.

I lived next to a dog that was tied to a tree for 7 years and barked constantly, so I understand. We did call the police when they went on vacation for a week, but there is no noise ordinance in our township and they said there was nothing they could do. Poor thing was lonely and wanted attention, but I hated that dog and the people who owned it. I was so glad when they moved.

That really just stinks....I would mention it to the neighbor-if they continue to do nothing then I would keep telling the dog to be quiet....maybe the dog just wants a little love & attention from you that it's not getting from its owner...make it noticable that you are annoyed when you are both outside & the dog continues...I guess the next step after all these great ideas would be to call animal control. I'm not sure if they could actually do anything besides talk to the neighbors & if you have already done this-it may be a lost cause....good luck either way.

Well, hopefully you give them some time with the collars off so they can bark. I mean, they are dogs and that is how they communicate.

Have you considered "making friends" with the dog?

Our neighbors have a high-strung Jack Russel mix who used to bark wildly every time she saw me grilling or working in the back yard. One afternoon, I decided to try out Cesar Millan's (The 'Dog Whisperer', from NatGeo) nose-eyes-ears method of introducing myself to a strange dog.

It *really* worked! Over the course of just a few minutes she went from a frantic barker to a friendly tail-wagger. Now, she gives one little bark when she sees me, like she's just saying, "Hello, I'm here!" but then stays pretty quiet....

It might not help all the time, but the dog would probably bark less when you were out in the backyard, when it can be the most annoying ... just trying to relax on your deck and the dog going nuts next door....

I bought this exact one for our Foster dog, who is a Great Pyrenees (they were bred to bark, but I live in a subdivision and it's not fair to the neighbors)
Put it on low first... just that level stopped our foster's barking immediately.
It's pricey- $60 but worth it!
The dog will look around and be frightened and may hide, but they get over it.
I couldn't do the shock collar... too mean. And the citronella collar isn't effective with Pyrenees
