My dog had surgery 3 weeks ago to remove 2 fatty tumors. We had to take her back to the vet a few days later for swelling and bruising around the incision. He gave her a shot to reduce the swelling. Since then she has been drinking excessively. Are they related? I have a call in to the vet and they have yet to call me back. I am concerned about diabetes.

It is probably the shot. A steroid shot will cause thirst. So I hope you get some good news!!!

What was the shot, was it steroids? It is possible to have steroid-induced diabetes in a pet after a shot. My cat has steroid-induced diabetes, but from years of taking the med orally. Don't panic yet, just give the vet a call.
FWIW, if it is steroid-induced diabetes, I know some cats eventually "normalize" and go off insulin after a few months. My cat did, until we had to put her back on steroids. Not sure about dogs, though.
Definitely give the vet a call, it could be a lot of things that are easily fixed.

I have a bad sinus infection and had a Steroid Shot yesterday and the first thing I was told was that I would be excessively thirsty and to drink loads and loads of water!!

I'm thinking its the shot.

It depends on what the shot was. Look on your reciept, the drug should be listed on it. If it was Rimadyl, Metacam or Ketofen it shouldn't cause excessive thirst. Prednisone, FluCort, Dexamethasone (Azium) or Depo-Medrol are steroids and can cause thirst. Depo is a long acting one and can last several weeks. The others shouldn't last more than a few days and should be out of her system by now. Either way, I'd check with your vet.

She was given Depo and the vet says that is probably what is causing her thirst. She wasn't as thirsty yesterday when I got home. The vet said give it 10 more days and if she is still excessively thirsty to bring her in for tests. Thank you everyone! I really feel it was the shot but I will continue to keep an eye on her. We are supposed to leave for Disney World in 2 weeks but I couldn't leave if thought Daisy was sick.
