Anarchists Pursue Chaos at GOP Convention

NEW YORK — Radical protesters are reportedly trying to cause chaos at the Republican National Convention (search) in New York City at the end of August.

Reports show that fringe groups are hatching a plot on the Internet, telling people how to attack and trick police with the ultimate goal of evacuating Madison Square Garden (search). The suggestions include everything from throwing marbles in the path of police-mounted horses to going to shooting ranges before heading to the convention so that their clothes will reek of gunpowder and trick bomb-sniffing dogs on the subways and commuter trains.

New York City police (search) say they are worried about the tactics diverting their time and resources from preventing authentic attacks, and add that they are preparing for "black blocs" of anarchists who cover their face with bandanas and vandalize corporate targets.

Wow. What a constructive way to get people to consider agreeing with your way of thinking. Let's throw marbles at mounted police, possibly hurting the cops when they fall and most certainly breaking the horses legs.


These people remind me of the extreme right wing loons who were shouting obscenities and throwing things at that DISer's car in the thread yesterday because she had a Kerry bumper sticker.

I think of the RNC in New York and the words "Chicago, '68" keep flashing in front of my eyes....

I hope it doesn't get ugly, but I'm really afraid that's an empty hope...

Hopefully this won't happen and everything will go through without a hitch.

I remember the only problems that we experienced during the 96 election (lived in LA and worked in the building the was the Dem. headquaters) - was having to ride up and down the elevator with secret service and have my vehicle subject to a check because Clinton was there along with former Gov. Edwards.

Me too.

I just don't understand what happened to good natured debate, where you could disagree with people but still go out for a drink or dinner with them after the debate was over.

Or what happened to peaceful protest, like marches and signs and peaceful demonstrations and what not? It just seems like there are more of these lunatic groups (both sides) now than in the past, at least that I remember.
