An open letter to 10/18 Magic passengers

It has been four days now since we got off of the ship. I am sure we all had a magical time as the weather was absolutly perfect and the ports and shows were great. Most of you are probably home and have unpacked your clothes and found places for all of your souveners. I wish I could say the same. It seems someone decided that they liked one of our pieces of luggage better than thiers. Of course it was the large one with a lot of clothes and other items in it that meant a lot to us personnally.

The luggage was in the Red Mickey section so I am sure that when whoever took it got it home they immediately noticed that it was not thiers. I can understand someone mistakenly taking the luggage because there are a lot that are similar. But isn't that why we put tags on them with names and other identification tags?

I have filed a report with the people at the dock but it has been four days now and still no information and the luggage has not been returned. So, if any of you happen to notice that you have the wrong suitcase with a Red Mickey tag on it, please notify Disney so that we can get our things back.

dcannon, so sorry to hear that! We were on the 10/18 cruise and one of our pieces of luggage was taken too...small one, full of gifts and stuff....
Luckily, it was returned to Lost & Found before we left port...apparently someone took it and realized it wasn't theirs after going through customs....
I sincerely hope you get your luggage back.......

I don't know if this will be of any assistance - we also were in Red Mickey and missing 1 large suitcase. After 45 minutes, we discovered it in Donald. In 3 cruises this is the only time our luggage has been misplaced. I sincerely hope that an honest cruiser makes arrangements to have your luggage returned.

Ugh! Sorry to hear about that. Of course they didn't accidentally take the suitcase with the dirty underwear, huh?

Makes me want to BLATENTLY mark my suitcases with something obvious!

Dcannon101 - that is awful!

Can someone tell me how this works - what are Red Mickey and Donald? We have very brightly colored luggage, for exactly that reason, and the pieces that aren't always have purple metallic ribbon on the handles.

Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? Do they give you luggage checks like the airlines do? No one there to check them? Do you think it might have gone back on the boat for another trip??

I hope it turns up for you - have you posted on the other disney cruise boards on the net?

The Mickey and Donald references are to sections of the port terminal where luggage is claimed prior to passing Customs. On the final day of the cruise, you're given luggage tags with various colors, based on which deck of the ship you're on. They want your luggage outside your stateroom door by around 11:00pm on the final night of the cruise. The crew will then transport it to the ship's hold and then off the ship once it ties up early the final morning. This makes it much easier for everyone to move around on the final morning. The bags are placed in different color-coded sections. Once you're off the ship, you head downstairs into the bottom level of the terminal and you can claim your luggage. The color-coded sections make it somewhat easier to find, but it's a good idea to have some kind of way to identify your bags, too. Like most airports, there is nobody to check to make sure that the bags you're claiming are actually yours. The standard signs that "many bags look alike" are there, but you've still got to be careful to make sure you get the right bags. Unfortunately, not everybody does so.

Grumpy's Mom....DCL really does have a very efficient luggage pick up system at the terminal. In 9 DCL cruises we have never had our luggage lost or misplaced.

Anyway...when you get into the terminal after you disembark the ship there are different sections divided up by character and color...hence the Red Mickey. These sections correlate with your luggage tags that you put on your bags the night before. Your stateroom host will leave the luggage tags on your bed. If you need more tags they are available on a table by guest services the last night of the cruise. The bags are further sectioned by stateroom numbers.

I guess with that many pieces of luggage being handled things are bound to be misplaced or taken by accident but there is no excuse for someone not to return and notify you that they have a wrong bag.

I am Kamgen's DH. I would like to make a suggestion that Disney have people check baggage tags of people before they leave the terminal. If someone wanted to take my bag they could have. I am glad that that they didn't. I think that we should get tags like they have at airports to put on our bags when you check in at port and on your last night on the cruise. You know the kind that take a pair of scissors to remove. Either that or I will have to figure out a way to remove my own luggage in the future. Losing our souvenirs was a terrible feeling to have even for a few short minutes.

I can empathize with you, as we had a couple of our bags taken on a Disney cruise quite a while back. It happened to be the one where my knee cap popped off while dancing on the Magic, too, so I was in a wheelchair for disembarkation. Someone had taken the bags mistakenly, along with their own luggage. Disney wouldn't take a report until literally all the other bags in the terminal had been claimed (I guess they wanted to see if the person would realize their mistake and bring them back). We had a towncar waiting for us and no way to let them know we'd be late. That's one of the reasons we really like Happy Limo. They were still there when we finally got out, and thankfully our flight wasn't too early or we would have missed it.
Our bags had ended up in Ohio, but were returned to us when the people discovered the problem, and they were shipped back to us. I hope that whoever took yours realizes it and contacts Disney. Hubby now plasters our bags with huge duct tape stripes and festoons them with hair ribbons, and sometimes we just carry them off the ship with us rather than having Disney bring them down into the terminal.

Hopefully you removed the original luggage tags (the big yellow ones that come with your cruise docs) before placing the bag out in the hallway. Like someone else said - it might be doing the next cruise.

NOTE:
Everyone needs to remove the original DCL luggage tags before arriving at MCO because your baggage might end up back at the port. The luggage handelers see that tag and then give the luggage to Disney.

I have found on many numberous of times during delivery, luggage tags that I first tried to turn in to the autorities and I was asked the second time and what do you want me to do with these and returned them back to me, so I started bringing back to the shop and mailing them back to the cruisers so just in case there was a problem with their luggage - I have seen Barb & Tony's way of ID and believe I am with them ----

We left one of our cases at Miami port and headed home to Canada. Driving! 1 hour out of Miami we realized it and headed back to Miami and found the luggage at lost and found. Not a pleasant start to our 25 hour drive home! Bet we never do that again. Well, thats what you think. After Magic in 01 we spent 1 night at Marriot in DD. We didn't realize until we got to Canada that we had lost our DCL cruise bag with all our souvenirs in it. We phoned and e mailed everyone and lo and behold we had left it in the parking lot at the Marrriot. The hotel shipped it to us by Fed Ex free of charge.
The moral of the story is there are a lot of honest people out there and I'm sure if it was a mistake someone will put it right, eventually.

The airline lost my bag once with some expensive momentos in it. From that day forward I NEVER pack anything of value except in my carryon. It is a shame that someone picked up your bag and I sincerely hope you get it back. Since it has only been four days it is possible the person maybe driving home from the cruise and wouldn't notice it for a day or so. (say if they live here in new england they may take a few days on the way home stopping in Virginia or somewhere) I hope that you do get your items back, it is sad enough getting of the ship let alone without your stuff.

In all my DCL cruises, including the 7-day, I've carried one softsided wheeled suitcase plus a shoulder-tote carry-on. I've never lost any bags, but twice decided to carry my own luggage off the ship. After reading this, I think I'll revert to that system for future cruises! For Wonder cruises, I may even carry my bag for embarkation. On my last three cruises, the porters at check-in were "<I>out of receipt tags</I>" and gave me nothing when taking my bag.

This is in response to the folks who mark their bags with ribbons, etc. When I traveled to Great Britain several years ago I made sure that I tagged my bag with both a red AND a glittery gold ribbon. That way I would be sure there would be no mix ups. Well.....I'm driving back from the airport, such a long flight, can't wait to get home and lo and behold my cell phone rings. It's the airline saying that I've taken the wrong bag. I looked at my bag with the two ribbons and tell them "No, I'm looking at it right now, it's my bag." They told me to check the name on the bag but it was missing so I pulled over and opened the suitcase and OMG there's a suitcase full of Scottish wool sweaters instead of Scottish Scotch hahahaha I ran back to the airport, very apologetic. The poor old lady whose suitcase I'd taken was very understanding. You see, they'd made it all the way to the parking lot before they found that the suitcase they'd taken was full of booze. The moral of the story, even if you see your "ribbons", check the nametag anyway

I am sorry... loosing a bag is no fun. I am sure it was just a mix-up though, and your bag will turn up once the person realizes they have the wrong bag. Just give it a little bit of time.

I want to thank all of you for expressing your concerns and hopes that we get our luggage back. I know I will mark our luggage in some way the next time we go. Some sort of ribbon or somthing that I hope is unique.

I called DCL Lost and Found again today and left another message so hopefully they will call me and give me some good news.

The best thing could be that my bag went on the Western cruise this week without us. If it did, I wish I was small enough to have gotten inside it. LOL.
