General Star Wars Discussion

I'm disappointed, but not surprised. Last time Diego got nominated, but no one else, when Stellan and Andy deserved it just for their respective monologues! I would have loved for Genevieve to get nominated for Mon's speech, but alas.

So, Andor picked up 14 Emmy nominations today:
  • OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR A NARRATIVE PERIOD OR FANTASY PROGRAM (One Hour or More)
  • OUTSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR A SERIES (One Hour) - Christophe Nuyens
  • OUTSTANDING FANTASY/SCI-FI COSTUMES
  • OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES - Janus Metz
  • OUTSTANDING PICTURE EDITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES
  • OUTSTANDING MUSIC COMPOSITION FOR A SERIES (Original Dramatic Score) - Brandon Roberts
  • OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL MUSIC AND LYRICS - "We are the Ghor" - Nicholas Britell, Tony Gilroy
  • OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES - Forrest Whitaker
  • OUTSTANDING CHARACTER VOICE-OVER PERFORMANCE - Alan Tudyk
  • OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
  • OUTSTANDING SOUND EDITING FOR A COMEDY OR DRAMA SERIES (One Hour)
  • OUTSTANDING SOUND MIXING FOR A COMEDY OR DRAMA SERIES (One Hour)
  • OUTSTANDING SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS IN A SEASON OR A MOVIE
  • OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES - Dan Gilroy
That's a lot of respect! We'll see what they can win. I feel like they could pull down a lot of the technical ones - production design, cinematography, costumes, visual/sound effects. The others might be a hard sell with the competition, but you never know.
If they don't win for "We Are The Ghor," I'm going to start a space France riot.

Good, but please leave it alone and don’t try and modernize it. It’s perfect as is!

I am sure it will be the current version, though, personally, I say that they should do "Special Editions" of all 9 - punch them up a little where needed. I'd like it, anyway.

I bet they try to clean up the preservation copy of the 77 print because I doubt this will be the Special Edition version. Kathleen Kennedy seemed really impressed with the BFI original print and I bet with George out of the way, she can make cleaning up the original so it can be distributed in IMAX or Dolby Vision for summer 2027. Or she uses that BFI print as the main scan for both theatrical and home use. I’d certainly buy it in 4K.

If she does, this will be yet another thing she does directly against George’s wishes. Which is kinda her norm at this point.

I hope you're right! I cling to my DVDs with the "original"-ish versions- I hate most of the changes made, though I wish I could make my own "perfect" version with a mix. (Han shot first, use Ian McDiarmid in Empire Strikes back, no Jedi Rocks but use Victory Celebration...)

I'm one of those weird people who prefers all of the changes, and think that they have only improved the movies. In fact, I think they should go further and do new Special Editions for all of the movies. There's nothing wrong with tidying things up. Art can live and change - it's okay. I guess I agree with George on that one.

I wonder if they will go there with another Skywalker descendent.... SO we have Mia Goth and Matt SMith as the two villians.

The Rise of Skywalker is 35 ABY... this Starfighter is going to be 5 years after... so 40 ABY.... puts us in the timeline for Sith Lady Lumiya and Darth Caedus who is in theory a grandson of Anakin...

I want to live in a world with both. I want to view what I saw when I was a kid because I prefer that version of the OT. And trust me, I ate up the SE when they came out, at least until the Jedi one that felt too much like messing with things that already worked well like the Max Rebo performance with Sli Snoodles (sp). That made me seek out the old versions which were still available on laserdisc. Later, I got the Harmy downloads because I wanted those on DVD and later on Apple TV. I would gladly buy a Steelbook 4K set of the non-SE versions that have been cleaned up for preservation but not adding in or tinkering. I hope KK does that because George is welcome to his opinion on what is THE version but he’s not in control of that now and some would like to view the original movie the way it was originally done when the 50th anniversary comes.

That's fair, I guess, but I'll never really understand it.

The originals were great. They stand on their own. I don't need new sequences with swoop bikes and jawas falling off large creatures. I don't need him fundamentally changing something with Han that made him the loveable rogue who had to fight dirty to survive. I don't need a CGI Jabba exactly restating what Greedo just said before Han shot him. There was a reason that was cut from the original film and it wasn't because Lucas had envisioned Jabba at the time to be anything other than a chubby Scotsman.

There was stuff that has been done over the year to improve rougher SFX like taking the boxes off the TIE fighters which is fine. Then there's just adding things because he could that takes away from the original version of the movie. Yes, it's his work and obviously he tinkered with it a lot. I'd rather watch what I saw when I was a kid. Kathleen Kennedy even said the BFI print was nice because what was original to the first movie has been lost some because Lucas decided the SE was it. That's why I enjoy the Harmy ones and other fan preservation versions. This is a franchise built on nostalgia so why not allow people to see it the way they originally did in as close to original film quality (4K) as possible?
