An off the rails joke at Jungle Skipper today

Well, one last thing about managers. This incident involved an overheard remark that could cause offense or trauma, as plenty of posts witness, or also not bother someone else. Nobody stormed out, nobody contacted WDW guest relations, either of which could happen.

If the server is doing well, a good manager will point out there was a comment, and instruct the server not to use the line. If the manager is a Cruella DeVille type, and ripped him a new one or fired him, then it would be better to know that sooner rather than Investing time working in an unreasonable work environment.

Wow! Just wow to this whole post. :sad2:

Where to begin? First off, the remark was a stupid joke quoted from a movie that was NOT said to the OP. The comment is inaccurate medically and perpetuates a common myth about that illnesses, I agree. As to whether it was offensive, I think that was up to the people to whom it was said, which was not the OP. But IMO the remark was not "off the rails." That description is way over the top.

Next, the OP speculates about the type of manager this is and whether she did the server a favor by potentially getting him fired over her reporting a remark she overheard. How flippant and insensitive is that attitude?

Lots of times, I get annoyed in my daily life by employees at places where I'm a customer. Sometimes, I give them back the attitude they give me or I'll argue with them. But one thing I don't do is go see their boss to complain. I would never assume that somebody doesn't need their job or, as the OP put it, shouldn't be investing their time in an unreasonable working environment.

"She said she would speak with him." I would give big money to know how that conversation went. Cause I bet I can guess.

Didn't the OP say previously though, that she didn't tell the manager which server said it that it was just a general statement? How will the Manager know which "him" to speak with?

We had lunch today at Jungle Skipper. Loved the restaurant. And Nathanel was fantastic. A lot of fun. We wanted tap water, which he said he would go draw up from the river.

But at the table next to us, the server introduced himself by saying

Roses are red, violets are blue,
I'm schizophrenic, and so am I.

I struggled with myself, as my family wanted to hightail it for An FP. But took the time to speak with the manager. I have a good friend who is schizophrenic. He struggles to be in crowds, and if he had been accosted with that, it would have been devastating.

I suggested removing the joke from the line up. As it isn't funny, and that she might want to speak with the CM about disabilities and humor. She said it wasn't in the line up, apologized, and said she would deal with it. In a decidedly non joke way.

Glad to see such professionalism, and hope the young CM skippers on with better jokes.

Well, golly. OP here.

As reported before, the server was not our server. I asked the manager if I could make a comment regarding the joke line up. I did not identify the server by name. And made it clear that I was not personally upset, but was providing an observation.

Which gave her a lot of latitude in how to respond.

The server introduced himself with the rhyme to a neighboring table, which had 2 parents, and 3 children, 2 of them preschool age. As has been pointed out, a problem with the rhyme is that it has nothing to do with actual schizophrenia. And I continue to be strongly of the opinion that it is up to parents to decide how to handle humor about disabilities or other "differences" with their children.

We were a table of 2 adults and 2 college student young adults. The ta water comment would not have been appropriate with preschoolers either. Who are literalists.

Op here. Wow.

I think the energy generated by this discussion is a good reason why a family restaurant at Disney would want to put this particular bit of patter off limits. They want to sell meals, not controversy.

Once again, I personally would have found it bizarre to chase after a server not my own to raise awareness of how that rhyme might feel to a family struggling with schizophrenia.

The manager was female. Standing next to the sub manager in charge of seating tables. I focused on the "joke" and suggested it be removed from the line up. She said she would speak with him. Which is the job of the manager, not a patron. I also suspect it probably would help his career rather than getting in big trouble for something more egregious. Speaking to someone is not the same as firing them.

I did talk with my colleague, who just married her love, who struggles with schizophrenia, with nobility. She is thrilled that on their honeymoon, he was able to navigate restaurants. She thought being greeted that way pout do the blue would have been very difficult for him, and was glad I mentioned it.

And we made our FP in very good time.

I am now leaving the wonderful world of Disney, where we have had a wonderful 2 weeks, and won't be further checking this thread. Good cheer to all on all sides of this!

The last quote makes a very good point. The OP seems to go back and forth on whether she identified the CM - if she just reported the joke, how will the manager know who to speak to? (Not that I think he/she did.)

I think the OP might be a bit delirious from pain, which could explain the contradictory statements. Constantly reaching for one's own back must cause a lot of stress on one's joints.
