An extremely embarrassing question: bed wetting

Pretty much this. ;)

He's in the largest night diapers available because he's a big kid, so we're going to try a few different methods that you guys have suggested before we leave. I just didn't want a stateroom host have an unpleasant surprise while changing the bed and then us be embarrassed about it :scared1:

I work in pediatrics. To me, if you don't mind disposable things (some people are really into being "green", but for a cruise I'd go with ease of use), the blue chux pads are the way to go. Lightweight, soft, easy to pack. We use them in the OR all the time.

He may be too young for this, but my son was 6 years old and slept so soundly that he had constant accidents. We got a wet sensor from Malem that attached to his underwear and would trigger a loud alarm as soon as it sensed wetness, waking him up and stopping the flow. IT took about a week and nothing since (that was about 6 years ago).

If he is potty trained at all other times, you may want to give this a shot - it was around $50 or so.

During last night of our cruise on the Wonder, my child had an accident which soaked all the way through to the mattress. I was so embarrassed, but then I remembered that the Wonder was scheduled for dry dock immediately after the cruise and the ship was getting all new mattresses. As we we getting ready to disembark, the crew was literally dragging mattresses into the hallway to be be discarded. That was one out of a 1000 kiddie embarrassments avoided.

Whilst changing a wet bed isn't pleasant, it won't be a surprise. They have done it tons of times.

As I agree with you that it shouldn't be their job to clean up your childs accident (I am sure loads of people will disagree) you can ask for them to leave the yellow bags and spare sheets. Also ask for the waterproof mattress liner.

Don't be embarrassed by bed wetting. I have worked with children all my life and it is just one of these things.

We had a bedwetter traveling with us on a cruise and we let the room attendant know in advance. They put a plastic cover on the mattress and left us extra bedding to change it out in the middle of the night. She also suggested we place a set of towels in the wettest area to try to decrease our middle of the night work. We also found we kept later hours and so a bathroom break at midnight or 1AM was a great success. Don't worry and please don't be embarrassed.
