An APRIL Adventure in Autism: 2008 (8/8) Time to Say Good-Bye....

I am finally here! :woohoo:

I haven't completely caught up, but I did read your Waffle House entry and was laughing out loud -- yes, in the South we eat grits, have biscuits with our eggs (sometimes we smother those biscuits with gravy ;)), and like our bacon thick. :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: Tricia is too funny!

Oh, I completely understand the bathroom quandry -- been there before!

Chapter Four: Hola, Pedro! Adios, Pedro!

When I left off, we had refueled/refreshed at the Waffle House in Virginia and were cruising down I-95 listening to some classic WDW theme park music. (Now, we probably listen to this CD about a hundred times a year… but at that point in time, it seemed extra magical, because we knew that it wouldn’t be long until we were hearing A Pirate’s Life for Me, The Tikki Bird Song, and the theme from the Haunted Mansion for real!) :woohoo:

Of course, this was now Saturday, so we were lucky that we did not have to worry about running into rush hour traffic. Nevertheless, Ed wanted to take the detour around Richmond via I-295, so that’s what we did. I do recall that we began running into a bit more truck traffic, but all in all, we kept moving at a steady pace for the next 40-or-so miles until we re-entered I-95 around Emporia, just before crossing into North Carolina. At this point, we pulled over so that I could (finally) take over the driving and Ed could get some rest.

Well, don’t you know, he put those little earplugs in, curled up with his blanket and pillow and dropped right off to sleep just as easy as you please! I must say that I was just the teeniest bit jealous... after all, I had not had the easiest time sleeping in the passenger seat and now I needed to stay alert for the next leg of our journey. Billy was watching his DVDs, happily singing his Duck-a-Duck-a song, and Tricia read her book. It was all rather boring until we began to notice the billboards for South of the Border.

“Tricia,” I called out, “Grab the camera and try to get some pictures of the billboards!”

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

South of the Border is a rest stop and roadside attraction on Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 301-U.S. Route 501 near Dillon, South Carolina, so named because it is just "south of the border" – the border between the U.S. states of South Carolina and North Carolina. The rest area features not only restaurants, gas stations and a motel, but also a small amusement park, shopping (including adult entertainment at the "Dirty Old Man Shop"), and, famously, fireworks. Its mascot is Pedro, an extravagantly stereotypical Mexican bandido. It is advertised by hundreds of billboards along surrounding highways that start 175 miles away. Well-known landmarks in the area, the irreverent signs feature Pedro, wearing a sombrero and poncho, counting down the number of miles to South of the Border.

Well, needless to say, it was a bit difficult for her to get some decent shots from the moving vehicle, but she managed to catch a couple:

DSCN0222.jpg

It was fun to keep our eyes out for the next one… I would read them aloud and Tricia would try to snap a pic. (Boy, was I ever glad I got those eyeglasses!) This kept us somewhat entertained for the next three hours as we crossed the length of the state.

The billboards

Among the billboards advertising South of the Border along Interstate 95
are the following:

* Pedro's Weather Forecast: Chili today, hot tamale! * Keep America Green! Bring Money! * You Never Sausage a Place! (You're Always a Wiener at Pedro's!) * Keep yelling, kids! (They'll stop.) * Sommtheeng Deeferen * Honeymoon Suites: Heir Conditioned * Fort Pedro, Fireworks Capital of the US * Etymologically Correck! * Howdy, Pardner! * Top Banana! * Pedro's fireworks! Does yours? * Chile Today, Hot Tamale! * South of the Border * Your sheep are all counted at South of the Border.* (Billboard had a rotating wheel with sheep painted on it)

Finally, we crossed the state line and there it was, in all it’s campy glory:

DSCN0228.jpg

Too bad we couldn’t stop! Well, I suppose we could have, but it was time for lunch and we were all anxious to reach the Comfort Inn and relax. I began to hear the :scared: dreaded whining, “Are we almost there?” and “How much longer do we have to go?” from Tricia, and Billy was stimming so loudly now that he woke up his father. Ed pulled his seat up and reached for the directions. We decided to pull off at the next rest stop, which we did.

After everyone had “rested” in the “rest” rooms, we grabbed some burgers and ate near one of the windows. It was a pleasant change of pace, but we didn’t want to dawdle, so soon we were packing up to leave. As walked back to the van Ed declared that he wanted to drive again. I put up an argument, but he is a typical male and feels for some reason that it is his duty/job/God-given right and privilege to do the bulk of the driving (!) Since I was getting tired, I acquiesced, but I was a little worried about him and decided to stay awake and keep on talking to him so he would stay alert.

Fortunately, it would only be another half-hour to forty-five minutes until we reached our destination, then we would be finished with the major portion of our drive. I cannot remember the exit... perhaps we were in Florence, S.C.? For some reason, when I look on the map that rings a bell. How wonderful it was to get out and stretch our legs, knowing that we were able to just relax for the rest of the afternoon/evening! :goodvibes

Here I am, taking a picture of our tired crew as we arrive at the Comfort Inn:

It was a beautiful day… sunny and hot!

Palm Trees! Yay!

It won't be long, now!!

great update Kathy!

nice billboard shots from Trica and all the info we could ever need about SOTB...should I be jealous when we drive south we don't have any rest-stop splenders of the world? :rolleyes1

now if you go straight down IL thought you can stop in BOOMLAND! 1 HUGE fireworks store....oh yes in 05 a roadtrip w/ my Dad and brother to St. Louis, Hot Springs AK and then back up IL...we made a stop there.

Here is one of their billboards

looking forward to more and when you pass under the WDW Welcome sign! :wizard:

Scrappie

LuvindisCruiser: LOL! Glad you got in on this one from the ground floor! :goodvibes

mousescrapper: I am so enjoying your report... hope Margaret is feeling better soon!

eandesmom: Welcome! I'd love to permanently cross "Driving to Fla" off of my list, too! :thumbsup2

MRYPPNS: Hi! How R U feeling? I hope it's not to hot by you... Ugh! it was 92 degrees here yesterday!

mom2mek: Well, we eat our biscuits with fried chicken at dinnertime! :confused3

blue river: I'm glad you're here, blue! Your appearances are simply made more valuable because of their scarcity! :rotfl:

Charleston Princess: Did you like Tricia's Fish-out-of-water story? :lmao: One of the great things about travel is that you get to see different perspectives on things... even breakfast!!

Kathy

Goodness! They like their fireworks out there in Illinois!!

"Party Pack" :lmao:

Kathy

oh yay...and that not the 1/2 of it! They sell the stuff over the border all around IL...and you are not suppose to bring it in the state lines

Now I didn't buy anything...but my devious Dad and Bro did I was like a complete nervous wreck driving home....:scared:

Good ol Pedro! Always there to make the weary traveler smile.

And I think that driving thing is on the Y chromosome. I don't know a male around who can give up control of the wheel!

It just makes my body hurt to think of riding in the car for that long :sad2: LOVE the picture of Ed and the kids after getting out of the car! They look like they're half asleep and have been in the car for 2 days :rotfl: We have looked like that, too!

Great updates, I have never seen grits either. Bill called me a Yankee with a southern accent.

I want to drive down one time but I don't think Bill's body could handle it.

Those billboards are cute.

mousescrapper, I have been to Boomland with the xH and his family. They did bring fireworks illegally back to Illinois, I only watched :rolleyes1.

On my girls trip in December, I took pics of a whole bunch of those SOTB signs WHILE DRIVING!!! It kept me awake! Now, I didn't take my eyes off the road, I just held my camera up and hoped the picture came out! About 1/2 of them did! :rotfl2:

We have stopped once (and that was one time too many) at South of the Border! Ick. :scared: Those signs can get entertaining, and they sure beat some of the other (not-so-great-for-new-reader-eyes) signs! It's always a bit disconcerting when your 6 or 7 year old says, "Mommy, what does NUDE NUDE NUDE on that sign mean?" *sigh* :sad2:

Great update! :goodvibes When we drove down in November 2007, we stayed right on the border of SC and GA - right near Savannah, but right off 95. The place was great - brand new, and fairly cheap - like $69 I think.

Sara

I did get a kick out of Tricia's fish-out-of-water story! I am still laughing about it fourteen hours later!

Love all the billboards for South of the Border -- I am such a sucker for silliness like that!

LOL, your billboard stories remind me of when I was 13yrs and my DSis and I drove out to Denver for a dance competition. On our way back for miles and miles we kept seeing billboards for Wall Drug. It was blisteringly hot, we had a car with black vinyl interior and no air conditioning. Their billboards kept advertising "Free Ice Water" so of course we stopped. It was a pretty neat place.

Someday I anticipate we'll be driving from Illinois to Fla, I just hope we can avoid it if at all possible.

Before I post my replies, I'd like to share some old photos with you!!

Aunt Rae dug these out of her closet and gave them to me. She took my DH, Ed ("Eddie"), to California on vacation when he was just four years old. (His mom was home with his infant brother.)

Among other places, they visited DisneyLand! :tink:

Here is little Eddie with some familiar friends....

Ed1965-2.jpg

Ed1965001-1.jpg

Note the picture on the lower right, above. That's Peter Pan being played by a girl, a la Sandy Duncan in the play. Characters didn't have "handlers" back then... they just roamed the parks freely, getting mobbed by kids!

That's Aunt Rae with Ed riding Dumbo!

*******************************************

moparop: I know what you mean! Ed has to be completely out of gas (pardon the pun) in order for me to drive!

wvdislover: We were fairly crumpled by that time! :faint:

mrsksomeday: I don't think I would recommend such a long drive for Bill. Besides, you wouldn't want it to cut into your touring time, would you?? ;)

mom2mek: Yes, I almost forgot about those "other" billboards! :rolleyes1

Charleston Princess:
Yes, the "cornier" the jokes, the better, I say!! ::yes:: Perhaps that's why I enjoy Hoop-Dee-Doo so much!

irish dancer: Tricia took Irish dancing lessons for a few years and even won a medal once! :shamrock: Then she decided she'd rather devote her time to soccer. Only problem was, her dad/coach had to keep telling her not to point her toes when she kicked! :rotfl:

Thanks to all for reading and following along...

Kathy

Kathy, I love those pictures!! That is fantastic. Bill's mom has some old ones when Bill was little, I will have to see if I can scan them. They are terrific!

I love those photos! Some day, I will find the pictures of my three brothers, father and mother on their trip in the early 80's, pre-Hedy.

mousescrapper, I have been to Boomland with the xH and his family. They did bring fireworks illegally back to Illinois, I only watched :rolleyes1.

glad to know I wasn't they only innocent by-stander...;)

On our way back for miles and miles we kept seeing billboards for Wall Drug. It was a pretty neat place.

I've been to WALL DRUG too...on some old family road trip out west too....I remember it. My parents had the great "I've been to Wall Drug" bumper sticker on their car too.

Kathy! I love the pic's thank-you's to AR and Ed for letting you share them. Wonderful Priceless memories :goodvibes and also Snow White doesn't look like she has a wig on either....

I have to ask my Mom to look for the picture of her, my Dad and older sis when they visited WDW in 1975...I was only 1 and stayed home w/ the grandparents.

Old Disney pictures are the best! Thanks for sharing.

:goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibesI love the old Pictures of Little Eddie!!! What an adorable little boy!

Pedros looks like fun!! I have read about it here on the Dis but never seen it because we take I-75 down to Florida from Atlanta.

Great Updates!

Chapter Five: Open up that Golden Gate!

Our weary troupe stumbled into the lobby of the Comfort Inn. It was somewhere around three or four in the afternoon and I was praying that our room would be ready so we could just unload the van and crash for a bit. A middle-aged woman behind the counter wearing rhinestone-studded eyeglasses on a chain greeted us with a long story about a group of patrons from the bar across the way that got nasty with her the night before. Seems she wouldn’t let them rent a room to continue their party after the bar closed and there was a big ruckus.

“Y’all missed all the excitement!” she gushed. “I had to call the police!” Ed gave me a sidelong look and let out a little sigh. :rolleyes2 “There must’ve been THREE or FOUR police cars here,” she continued excitedly. “They took all those drunks away, and let me tell you, they didn’t go easy!” Gee, that’s really what we want to hear. :worried: We’re checking into a hotel with our two children on a Saturday night and there’s a rowdy bar nearby??

“…. and then, not a half-hour later, there was a HUGE accident on the highway and fire-trucks and ambulances came screamin’ from everywhere and…,” she continued to recount the horrible tale of fiery death on the highway we had just been traveling, and would continue to travel the next day.

What could we do? :confused3 Until she finished checking us in, we were her captive audience! Eventually, we were given our room key card and we were able to extricate ourselves from her thoughtless jabber. I wondered how many times that day she had told the same story, hoping that the extent of the nighttime “excitement” had been gradually inflated with each telling.

Back out to the van we went. It was a short drive around the building to our assigned room and we pulled up right outside the door. Knowing that we would have this one night here, I had packed a separate bag with one set of clothing for each of us, plus some toiletries, so we wouldn’t have to unpack all of our luggage. We opened the door and were greeted by the lovely air conditioning! Ahh! Everyone took their shoes off and flopped down on one of the two Queen beds.

The room was pretty standard and completely forgettable… I don’t recall any problems with it. Ed turned on the television and we all just relaxed for the next couple of hours. (Well, three of us relaxed. Billy kept pacing up and down across the floor and wouldn’t lie down, no matter how hard we tried to coax him.) Sitting still for so many hours strapped into his seat must’ve been very difficult for him :hyper: and he just needed to burn off some steam.

I did my best to keep him quiet… Ed had dozed off while watching TV… but I was feeling pretty sleepy myself. I tried to read a magazine, but my eyes kept crossing and I'm sure I must've dozed a bit myself. As it neared dinnertime, however, Tricia and Billy both began asking when we were going to eat, so we all got washed up a bit and headed out in search of food.

We found a little place that looked pretty decent… sorry, can’t remember the name, but good reporter that I am, I remembered to snap a picture!

DSCN0241.jpg

We came. We saw (the menu). We ate. We left. More than that, I cannot recall. I believe we may have stopped at a Rite Aid along the way back for some Doan’s Pills… Ed’s back was bothering him. We went back to the Comfort Inn, got into our jammies, and turned in early.

Woo-hoo, wasn’t that an exciting evening??

Seriously, we were so glad there were no lights and sirens around the hotel that night!

The next morning, we were up early. We washed and dressed and partook of the Continental Breakfast served in the lobby. Coffee, tea, juice, cereals, and.... waffles?? There was a waffle iron set up with a pitcher of batter next to it so guests could pour and press their own! Well, they weren't shaped like Mickey, but hey, who are we to complain?! We ate our fill and enjoyed watching the large television set up in the "dining" area. All-in-all, we were pleased with our stay here.

Settled up at the front desk and went back to the room and packed up. Hit the bathroom one last time and then it was back on the road again, with Ed driving (of course!)

DSCN0249.jpg

The day before had been exciting because we were finally on our way. This day was doubley exciting because in just a few hours, we would be in Walt Disney World at last! :smickey:

Ed’s goal was to get to Florida by lunchtime. I thought that was a bit optimistic since Map Quest had estimated that it would take us 3.5 hours just to cross the rest of South Carolina. Nevertheless, we kept moving along, listening to a new audio book and talking about this and that to pass the time. Ed’s back was holding out pretty well, but he grumbled a bit every time we ran into a bit of traffic. I, on the other hand, was much more comfortable now that we were traveling during the day and I did not have to worry about trying to get some sleep while slumped over in an awkward position in the front seat.

Can’t remember if we ever made it to Florida for our lunch break… we may have had to stop in Georgia, but it sure was a welcome relief to finally catch sight of the Florida State line!! (Yes, we must’ve taken a break in Georgia for lunch because I remember wanting to stop for the little glasses of orange juice, but Ed was anxious to keep moving.)

DSCN0243.jpg

We still had over two hours of driving left! But psychologically, it helped us to know that we were already in the same state as the Mouse! Don’t know exactly where, but this must’ve been Florida:

DSCN0233.jpg

Eventually, we began seeing signs that our long journey was nearing its end:

DSCN0254.jpg

DSCN0259.jpg

And finally (FINALLY), the most welcome sign of all!!
Yippie!! We’re here! We’re here!!
