We are taking the Amtrak Autotrain down to Disney World in September. I have a question for you "experienced" Autotrain takers, how long do you usually spend at the station to wait for them to unload your vehicle? I like to get an idea of this so I can plan accordiling (sp?) TIA!!!!

They take the vehicles off in a completely random order. There is no guarantee that if you were the first one on (or last one on), you are the first one off. They begin taking the cars off even before the passengers disembark, so you can be lucky and on your way immediately - or - you can be like us in 2003. We were the LAST car unloaded in Sanford - something over an hour wait. At least they gave us a nifty Autotrain cardboard sunshade :rolleyes2

The "standard" is that it can take up to two hours, though it naturally varies depending on how many cars you have that day, and of course even with a full train the cars off early can be on their way. Few people will therefore ever have to wait the full time to unload everything; the unlucky party whose vehicle is last off being the exception. Most people will probably be on their way inside of an hour, but again, allow two.

It's not a completely random process, though it may appear so (and thats the easiest explanation). The vehicles have to be taken off in the same order they were loaded into individual auto carrier cars, but the first carriers to be loaded could be the last unloaded, or something in between. You have little way of knowing where in the train your vehicle is, whethor it ended up at the front or rear of a given auto rack car (or cut of cars), so really it may as well be completely random.

Thanks for the posts. I will plan for 2 hours but will cross my fingers and hope for 1/2 to an hour. Do they have a playground inside/outside of the trainstation for the kids to play on? And also do they have a place to eat? (In case we are the unlucky ones)

TIA!!!

There is a little store that sells magazines, sodas and prepackaged snacks. Last time I was at the AutoTrain station in Sanford (in 2003), there wasn't a playground.
