Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Turns out that trash pandas and cobra chickens are things that don't translate well internationally (like The Hokey Pokey and Polk-a-roo).

I'm still amazed that we don't have to lock up garbage bins here. - they just sit on the curb with the lids not even always closed (if they are full).

Our garbage bins has latches on them, otherwise the trash pandas have a field day!

Everytime I think about trash pandas I remember when DS was around 3 or so. He was looking out our window into the courtyard of the place we were living and he was saying "cats, mommy, cats!" I looked out and there were 4 HUGE raccoons just having a wander.

In addition to raccoons, we also have a ton of deer, bunnies, and once I spotted a river otter running up our street! Probably once a month or so, some school or another gets put on lockdown because of a cougar sighting.

I don't have much to contribute...but I love Canada Geese! They're beautiful and I want to pet one, but I keep my distance haha

Smart decision. They are nasty, vile things.

They are definitely a regional thing. The only time in my life I ever saw a live-in-person trash-panda was in Toronto. There were two of them, in the landscaped courtyard of an up-scale hotel, busy in the bushes but not foraging for trash, if you get what I mean.

We had a bunch of lil baby trash pandas hanging out on our back deck one night several years ago. I thought for sure we had a nest or something under the deck. They climbed up the sides and were sitting on the railing, looking towards our back door which was open to the screen door. They’re noisy little things! But it was a one time event, and we didn’t see them again thankfully! And our garbage is in the garage, no chance of them getting to it!

Where's this? In my part of California we're dealing with them all the time. When I first moved into our current house I put out the garbage overnight and found the can overturned. They won't typically go after them in the day.

But in some places the big concern would be bears. I've seen some rules saying that they can't be left out overnight, and some places encourage the use of external bear resistant enclosures. I suppose they also keep out raccoons and birds. Other setups include these cans with a top that screws off. I can't imagine being a collector and having to deal with that. Some cans have locking mechanisms.

A major city right beside Toronto :)

Our first home in the Beaches area of Toronto had an old tv antenna tower that ran up the back wall of our house past the dining room and bedroom windows… the raccoons used the antenna tower as a ladder to our roof.. where they’d cross to the fireplace chimney and make themselves at home. What a noise they could make in that chimney! I was putting my daughter to bed one evening I went to pull the window shade in her room and came face to face with a Mama raccoon with a kitt in her mouth taking it down the tv antenna to the ground.. she made that trip up and down five more times until all of her babies were safely on the ground. The hubby and I were having coffee on the veranda an hour later and there was Mama and babies raiding all the neighbors garbage that had been put out for the next morning. Needless to say we arranged a visit the next day from a humane catch and release wildlife control company. As cute as they were.. I appreciated the quiet once they’d been moved out, not to mention the future expense for the chimney and roof repairs that would have been eventually needed.

Question for the Canadian hockey fans. I was watching the Flames/Ducks last night on ESPN+ and getting the Flames feed from SportsNet. The GWG it showed the shot speed, in MPH. Is that normal for SportsNet to have speeds in MPH and not KPH? Or was it just because the feed was being broadcast on ESPN+?

Never watched any games that showed that type of information at all.

Our focus is to unseat the metric system - bit by bit - until its gone ...
