Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Not all milk is homogenized. It's still possible to get cream top milk.

This is what it looks like if allowed to settle.

Not sure about raw milk though. I know it's possible to get it, but not sure about the legality of sale.
But there are still the non-fat, 1%, 2% (aka lowfat) and whole milk, all of which are normally sold homogenized. I guess unhomogenized non-fat milk can't exist since there is no cream in it.

That may be the case but it is the only milk advertised that way. Here’s our 1% and it doesn’t have the H word.

I can't find a photo where I can read the label, but did find 2% Beatrice milk label and it says homogenized. Wonder if the lower butter fat in 1% milk makes homogenization unnecessary.

I wasn’t alive in the 60s but I have a hard time believing that.
My Uncle said it was some sort of regulation backed by the dairy farmers, because most of the value to the farmer in milk is in the butter fat, but non-fat milk has the same nutrition.

There's still a range at which skim/non-fat/fat-free can still contain some fat. I'm looking for an image of a label to see that they might say. I don't normally buy it so I wouldn't have a reference. OK - found something. I think even if it's skim milk there's a trace of fat in there that might need to be homogenized, especially since the vitamins A/D are fat soluble and have to be dispersed.

I forgot to tell you that I learned a lot from that video. It was truly scary to learn how ignorant I was about another province, especially with taxation.

And Annette, could we tone down the caps on that sentence? :rotfl2:;)
:scratchin Well, we could but I wouldn't want to leave any room for doubt. :goodvibes Thanks for watching the video; I was afraid you might think it was some sort of snark, which it totally wasn't. I thought it was neat and I agree, very informative.

The point was more that we call it **** milk. Yes, it’s short for homogenized, but it’s definitely a non PC word in any other sense.

ETA- case in point, the word was edited out.

I get that. But if you are buying 1%, 2% or Whole milk, it is likely all homogenized milk.

I have a question, is your Kraft Mac and Cheese boxes blue or red? Ours are blue but I heard in Canada they are red. :confused3 🧀

Non-fat milk has to have less than point 5 grams of fat. They fortify non-fat milk with vitamin A and D since it is removed with the butter fat.

Canadians, is there an American Christmas tradition that you wish would also catch on in Canada and is there a Canadian tradition that you wish would catch on in America?

1% milk from here in BC. I've only ever seen the word homogenized on milk that is 3.25% milk fat here. This is an interesting thing this milk discussion 🤣

There's very little natural vitamin D in milk.

We don’t have that, we have milk in bags instead ;)

You are giving me two flashbacks -

Those annoying tupperware pierce the bag for a spout thingy.

And when the bag falls right out of the damn pitcher. Those bags always seemed like Las Vegas.

:confused3 Not sure what you could possibly be thinking is different? Christmas here is basically identical to Christmas there. The only thing I can come up with is Boxing Day, based on our British roots and it would make no sense for the US to adopt it.

NYC tree lighting as an example.
