Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Honestly, I probably drink two drinks a year,, but I don't see many people following the rule (or, at least, changing their habits to do so).

Also, it does not appear that Prince Charles (as he was when the picture was taken) enjoys Canadian beer :)

I think the alcohol guidance is probably accurate. It’s a good reminder to drink less. I’m not opposed to anyone putting warning labels on alcohol. Who knows if it will make any difference.
In your respective countries was there an uptick in drinking early on in the pandemic? I remember that being the case in the U.S. but I want to say that leveled off?? Not sure.

Observationally from my husband and I and my friends yeah we did drink a bit more early on but not what I would say was excessive. Then again March 2020-early May 2020 is a blur not because of alcohol but rather time did not pass the same and every other day something new and crazier was happening. I do appreciate that in my state the pandemic did push for laws to be adjusted--curbside and to go alcohol stuck around not that we haven't used it much but it's nice to order alcohol online or call it in and be able to drive up curbside to get it.

Shouldn't this question be asked on an American culture thread? You could title it "Americans asking Americans." :rotfl2: (Totally joking here!)
I was thinking of doing that but figured what the heck, Americans from all over are here anyway. I’m weary of making a northern/southern American thread specifically to be honest.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64311705 - What's behind Canada's drastic new alcohol guidance

So to our neighbors to the north I found this article very interesting. I know that my friends in the US would not be following this guidance at all but I wondered what the Canadians thought of this new guidance

No different than things like a food guide. It's just a recommendation based on scientific research.

Okay, now you REALLY need to start a cultural USA thread. (Plus, the whole "Which States are Southern?" seems very "political". Ha!!!)
No, that’s my last post on the subject. I want to see if Canadians had a take on it, if they have visited the South before on vacation. It’s actually not political, just a cultural debate. If I did start another thread, it would probably be closed down in a week. I was trying to make a light hearted post but anything further on the subject might not be for ideal discussion.

Yes, that is why I put "political" in quotes. I did watch it, but as I'm sure you know, discussions like that can become very heated on both sides, no different than "Which style of American barbecue is best?" or "Is bacon a food group?"

True, but we respect everyone’s opinions here. So I trust those who wish to comment on it, to do so in a positive, informative, and polite manner. :-)

You are all south to us. ;)

well most of you are.

Something like 17 states are mostly or fully north of Canada’s southernmost point.

I have lived in Atlanta, Georgia for 20 years, but I am originally from Chicago - so not sure how to comment on it.

Having generalizations causes issues on this thread. I’ve learned to avoid talking about many of them myself. @SirDuff is a scientist, so I get why he’s a stickler for 100% accuracy. I’ll admit when I accidentally misspoke something as fact vs opinion, but sometimes I think some on this thread take it to far (like @seshat0120 once trying to inaccurately paint me as a nationalist, which I am not one). For the record @SirDuff, facts that are true are important but people can draw a a range of conclusions from any fact (that doesn’t mean they are all correct either).
My facts are more important and truer than your facts ... so i think that about covers that topic.

It's actually 27 states that are partially north of Canada's most southern point.
