Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Yes, the wedding was a lot of fun.

(I’m purposely ignoring the topic you keep referring to. My brain is on vacation mode).

We are going to brunch tomorrow, then we have a day and a half to ourselves, then we go home Sunday morning. It’s going to be about 37C when we get home.
I was talking about the wedding. I hope you and your family have a great time.

Anything special happening in Canada this weekend?

Can’t speak for Canada as a whole, but here goes.

Formula 1 race in Montreal tomorrow.. A Taste of Italy in downtown Toronto this weekend, food, entertainment and fresh air. There is an Indigenous Peoples Cultural festival at historic Fort York downtown.. There was the Toronto 10K this morning.. the Jays are at home to the Yankees this weekend - we lost today 4-0.. The Red Bulls play the Toronto FC tonight (at BMO I believe)
The annual arts festival called Luminato which features live music, theatre, and art is wrapping up its 3 week June run today & tomorrow..
Chris Rock is at Scotiabank arena tonight (but not Will Smith.. lol) I’m sure I’m forgetting something.. but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just a typical Toronto (and area) summer weekend 😊

Sounds great. As an NYCFC fan, Toronto beating NYRB would really help so please beat them tonight. Happy the Yankees won too. In my area, local summer events start next week so I’m excited.

The good old American Monday Holiday Act moves the holiday to Monday, but yes, the actual June Teenth is tomorrow.
June Teenth is interesting to me since my ancestors fought for the Union. I get the main point of the holiday is the end of all types of slavery (including indentured servitude) but I wish the media would also talk about all the men and women from the Union who fought to end slavery and freed people as the Union army advanced into the South. I just feel that point gets largely ignored on the day. :confused3

:flower3: If you can find this on any of your streaming services, I highly recommend it. It's a very interesting, touching and lesser-known part of our shared American/Canadian history regarding the emancipation of slaves by Empire Loyalists through a treaty with King George after the Revolutionary War, 80 years before Lincoln's Proclamation.

I do always find that interesting since England actually tried to support the confederacy during the Civil War. I’m glad you guys were on the right side of the CW. Did you know many Canadians fought for the Union in the CW? Most went back to Canada after the war but I wonder how many in Canada actually know whether their ancestors fought in our CW?

Well, 40 years ago my first exposure to June Teenth was in southeast Texas. It was a day you stayed home because the KKK had subverted the day to do cross burnings.

Edit: I see your point about why it would not make sense for Canadians to celebrate Juneteenth.

Because that's not the point of Juneteenth. Historically, it's a holiday that was celebrated by African Americans celebrating their freedom from slavery. What you're talking about is co-opting it to make it easier for white people to relate to.
So Canada has a reason to celebrate Juneteenth too.
Since the Emancipation Proclamation has no bearing on Canada, there's no reason for them to celebrate Juneteenth.

It’s not co-opting it. It’s a historical fact and a federal holiday and there is more than one reason to celebrate it. No federal holiday is meant for a select group only. We all have different connections to the holiday and it is meant to be inclusive not exclusive.

I must say I agree. And my reference to The Book of Negroes has no direct relationship to Juneteenth. The events took place almost a century earlier. And as far as Canada goes, slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire on August 1, 1834.
