Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Considering our HOA paid over $76K IIRC for a combined pickleball and basketball sports court for the neighborhood (every house paid $120 for it) last year yup it's popular here and it does get used a ton so I suppose in the end it was a good investment even if most homeowners (including us) were grumbling at how they went about it. And I quote from the HOA "people expect a neighborhood where homes can sell for over $1million to have sports courts like this".

There a decent amount pickleball courts/places to play in our metro.

My husband's company also has a pickleball family outing in about a month at one of the local Chicken N Pickle (there's 2 here and then one a few hours away).

Sister-in-law comes back from her Montreal trip tomorrow, we'll be seeing her Thursday for Round 1 of Father's Day stuff so I'll ask her how it went.

In America we have Major League Rugby. In fact, the final will take place on June 25th between NY and Seattle.

Americans, are HOA’s very common? I don’t think we have those here. Well, maybe one street in my neighborhood kinda has one, but it isn’t called HOA. There’s also condo associations which are apartments or townhouse complexes. And there are heritage areas that have regulations over what the outside of your house and property can look like. Generally though, an HOA isn’t something I heard about until the Dis.

It depends on the wealth of the area or if it is a property with historical value.

They are common enough I would say. There are different types whether single family homes, condos, or townhomes. Often they are associated to developments by a builder/land developer where there are common amenities (pool, club house, common areas, reservoirs, and other significant improvements) that need to be maintained jointly by all the "home owners" in that development. Some can be quite large and others can be small.

Yeah they are fairly common. You'll find them a lot in suburbia because of how those are planned out. Many of ours are developer neighborhoods. Technically my neighborhood is still developer controlled but should be very soon turned over to the Board completely. The developer is one of the largest in our metro. The developer of ours he is really big on family-oriented things so he has what is called Mom's Council where there's a bunch of activities throughout the year at various neighborhoods.

Our neighborhood is large, it's meant for up to 700 homes but there's I think maybe around 650 built??

John is right there's a variety of ones from townhomes to condos to duplexes to just homes. Generally speaking most live in one for amenities, property values (meaning HOAs tend to help keep the property value up) amongst other things. Some HOAs provide things like trash and recycling as part of the dues (ours in particular doesn't but our city is our provider) or snow removal (our in particular doesn't but it's on city roads so the city does that)

Ours is mostly known for the waterfall feature for which it's part of the HOA's responsibilities in upkeep and repairs (the waterfall is considered unique in its size, it is a natural one though other than the pipes installed all the rocks are just natural left over from blasting to get into the neighborhood when it was first built). People love to take photos so homecoming, prom even a wedding or two it's common to see people taking pictures.

This was from mid-October 2015 (so the rocks have eroded and been shaped differently if looking now which affects how the water flows over the stones) when the HOA had permission to dye the water blue for when the Royals were making their way to get into World Series (for which they ended up winning), they had to keep adding the dye in as they kept winning games lol

I think they're more common where there are a lot of newer housing developments. They aren't common in my area outside of condos. Not a lot of planned developments and neighborhoods were built before HOAs were common.

Is “sour” a word that Canadians use as slang? There is a couple that I watch on YouTube that go to LV a good bit and when things aren’t going well, they say it is sour. I had never heard that before. I was wondering if it was a Canadian thing or if they just made it up to keep from saying an ugly word.

Hear it a fair amount in this part of the country.
