American Tourister Luggage - Hardsided

Who travels with the hardsided American Tourister Star Wars luggage? How do they hold up? Does anyone travel with the checked size, do they withstand baggage handlers?

We've only ever had softsided luggage and had one of our bags get sliced on our last trip and ruin some of our clothing. Exploring other options and really love the Star Wars set, but worried about them looking beat up.

I got my daughter the smaller C3PO luggage last year for Christmas and it has been on 7-8 RT flights this year and has held up really well. I thought that it might scratch easily but so far no scratches and minimal dirt on it too. If I could find another non-star wars luggage made out of the same material, I'd by it for myself.

We have the large C3PO, the large Darth Vader and the small R2D2 and also a small BB8 (shaped like BB8). WE use the first three quite a bit and we love them. I bought them starting in 2015 (have added to them over the years). No issues with them and we travel quite a bit.

Don't have experience with that type of luggage but if buying something new, I would try to pick out a unique color so it is easier to spot you luggage in baggage claim. Far too many bags look the same and it is very easy for someone to grab the wrong bag in error when they all look alike.

I just bought my son Boba Fett 28" and 21" spinner suitcases. They're for Christmas, so I don't know how they hold up, but they're pretty awesome and I'm not even a SW person. I ordered the 21" first and thought it was a bit small, so then I ordered the 28" (hard to find and not cheap!!). It's a lot bigger than the 21". I wish there was an in between size but anyway, they're pretty cool, get great reviews and are quite well made. But honestly I don't know how that kind of luggage holds up as I, too, have had only soft-sided for years now.

I'm coming back to thank the OP for posting this. After writing the post above, I decided to check and see if there was another size Boba Fett spinner available. The answer is no, but I found the same 28" suitcase for $89 plus $10 shipping (oversize item) from Burlington. I paid $199 to American Tourister via Amazon. I requested a refund, and now I just have to take the box in to a UPS drop-off. I will be refunded $191 (they charge $22 to ship it back). That's a savings of almost $100!!! So thank you, OP!

And if anyone else has a Boba Fett fan in their household, Burlington has both the 21" and 28" spinners at great prices. I myself have no idea who Boba Fett is but I know what he (?) looks like. Last month I saw a Boba Fett head in the Crystal Shop in Disneyland, all made out of Swarovski crystals. When I sent the pic of it to my son, he quickly texted back to find out if it was for sale. It was, for a mere $8,670 . It made the suitcases seem like a really good deal.

Ours are just solid black, so I can't really comment on how well the design holds up, but I can say that the suitcases themselves are very sturdy. Ours don't really show any wear and the wheels are fantastic - they roll really well.

If you use 28” luggage don’t the airlines consider that oversized and charge you more???

You can sometimes squeak by on the dimensions but it is much harder to slip by the standard 50lb weight limit most US airlines impose. You may be allowed more weight if you have elite status or are traveling in a premium cabin.

We've never had an issue with size as long as we've been under the weight limit. On international flights we travel with smaller bags.

We have the carry-on 21" Darth Vader and R2D2. Have flown with them probably five times..have held up very well aside from a scratch on Darth, but we have never checked them. I won't do that b/c I've seen how suitcases are handled and don't want them getting beat up. Have even carried them on DCL as I didn't want DCL handling them to our stateroom. Would love to have the bigger ones, but don't want to check them. So we just travel light and carry on. They do open up and expand a few inches, but cannot be expanded to count as carry-on.

My nephew has BB8..just took a trip with him, so we had BB8, R2 and Darth...the SW flight attendant was helping me get Darth in the overhead...saw the BB8 and R2 were already on the right-hand side, said we needed to balance the force, so he put Darth on the left lol
We do get a lot of attention traveling with them, they are that awesome looking

Thanks to y'all, we will be traveling with a 28" Boba Fett suitcase for the foreseeable future . I swear the Budget Board cost me more than anything else I follow online!

DS will absolutely love it! We've had great experiences with American Tourister Disney soft sided and the little C3PO for a several years. If this one is of the same quality, then it is a steal at $90. Thanks everyone for sharing!

Have you checked the C3PO bag? If so, how has it faired?

We have not checked it because my son insists on carrying it onboard every trip, but I would not hesitate to do so. It is easily the sturdiest bag we have. The handles and wheels are solid. The casing is thick and strong with lots of texture and graphics. It also has a nice matte finish that will camouflage any stuffing or scars--though I suspect they would probably just make C3PO and Boba Fett look more realistic!

We just bought our first hard sided luggage piece's and I have to say so far so good... 3 trips. While not Star Wars related piece's. I loved that structured feeling when packing, everything was solid. I did miss the outside pocket, but I changed up my personal carry on item... and everything work out just fine.
