American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread

I could cry...really. This season is such a bust. Not one single compelling person in the group. Last year there were MANY compelling personalities and backstories. I don't even KNOW who these people are! Most of them it like this week is the first I've seen or heard of them. This is a waste of an Idol year truly.

Melinda Doolittle DOES little for me. She looks like she's 45 (but not in a cute compelling way like Taylor with the Salt-n-pepper hair). She has NO neck! She looks like Steven Van Zandt from the Sopranoes...it's bizarre.

Lakisha. Yeah she can sing but so what? Single mother? So what? As uninteresting as Fantasia.

I am so let down, deflated and unimpressed by everyone. But like a good train wreck, I'll probably watch. The guys suck, the girls are boring...UGH! DH was right, this show has jumped the shark. But oddly, the show formula is exactly the same, and the formula works. The performers are terrible. I didn't even see anyone during the inital auditions who wowed me. In past years I chose, right from the beginning, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Bo Bice, Chris Daughtry. We'll just call this year Season 3: Part II

After watching auditions and Hollywood week, I thought the guys were going to better than the girls this season. Apparently I was wrong. The girls just blew the guys away last night. Sure, I still like Blake and Chris S., but other than that, after watching last night, I think the other guys need to go home.
Lakisha and Melinda were my favorites last night. I like their personalities, too. They are both humble and strong singers. I would be happy to see either of them win. I agree with another poster that the final will probably come down to the two of them........or that is how I see it now, anyway.

ETA: I really like Jordin too. I forgot to mention her. I think she will be up in a high/top spot too. I really like her bubbly, happy personality. She is cute!

For those who like it, Rickey.org is back up. Maybe it was never down :confused3 but I haven't been able to get on it for days.

Good and seemingly safe site for d/l mp3's.

Does Dial Idol has Antonella as #2 doesn't it?

I sort of think that's funny - maybe VFTW really does have that much influence on the voting. Anyways, that site is pretty funny to read and makes the whole American Idol season easier to stomach.

Girls were much better. I really think that Melinda should drop her last name - Doolittle doesn't sound too good for a competition. I hope I don't get flamed here but I really think she needs to stop wearing jackets and let us see a little more shoulders/arm. Lift up your head, raise your chin level and pull her shoulders back because it always look as though she doesn't have any neck. She can definitely sing and is starting to look more comfortable on the stage - tiny little improvements like that will go a long way.

Favorites of the night for me were: Melinda & Jordin & Sabrina.

I like LaKisha's song but didn't like her visual performance of it. She seemed a little scary when you saw her move around the stage and I just didn't like her dress at all. I hit the rewind button after it and watched without looking at her scary pointing and it was so much better. I know it is a singing contest but I also judge base on what they look like while singing and what they wear.

I don't really understand why Gina seems to be in lots of top 4 or 5 lists. I don't get it.

I am also very very dissapointed with AI this year. Normally I have already picked out my absolute favorites. But this year nobody caught my ear. I don't always pick the winners but I stand by my favorites.

I thought Sanjaya was going to be really good, but last night was just awful. He does NOT do Stevie Wonder any justice.

The girls were better than the guys but not like last year. There were tons of strong singers last year, and this year it's like umm ok what happened?

As for my fave this year, I can't pick one because none of them impressed.

Well, I guess based on your judging, Patti Labelle should have given up a long time ago;)
I hope that this singing competition is based on singing, and not how old they look or whether they have an interesting story.

That being said, I did enjoy Melinda, Lakisha, Sabrina and Gina. Sabrina may get more votes because she can sing well and is also pleasing to the eye.

ITA! This season is just like it. And like I said previously, I can see it being a true battle between Melinda, LaKisha, and Sabrina. I'm not saying they'll be the top 3, but they'll be the real competition like Fantasia, LaToya, and Jennifer in season 3. Perhaps I'm just let down because last season was so good.

We saw what happened there the better of the 3 didnt win....Fantasia was nowhere near as good as those 2 in my humble opinion

You would think so, but really it's just as much about the look and the backstory as it is the singing. Why else would Simon keep coming back to people's weight issues or "you don't look like an American Idol" or Paula always saying to the pretty girls with not as much talent "well you look beautiful tonight." And then why do they do the makeovers every year? Elliot was just as good with his crooked teeth as he is with straight ones, but it's a very image driven industry and if these kids don't look the part, it's difficult from 19's end to market them.

And there are always the people who become popular favorites based on compelling back stories. I mean honestly (sorry Dan!), Kellie Pickler was alright, she wasn't amazing, but did people feel bad for her because her dad was in jail and her mom abandoned her? Yes. Did she get some votes because of that? Yes. What about Jim Verraros in season 1? He was not that great, but he got pretty far because of the back story about his deaf parents.

As much as it should only be a singing competition (and yes, people who don't "look" the part have won and all), but you can't forget that it is in fact ruled a lot by the look and the back story as well.

Oh ITA. I think that whole "divas" in the bottom 3 thing was staged in season 3 as well. I don't think it's possible the voting actually ended up that way. Maybe 2 of them were in the bottom and the producers thought, hey, this would make good TV if all 3 of them were there!

I also thought it was odd that Lakisha chose that song with J-Hud doing it so well in Dreamgirls.

Backstories are needed IMO to keep me interested in the performers (especially the lousy ones...like Kellie Pickler). Last year the only "meh" person was Lisa Tucker. Even Covais was interesting with the whole Chicken Little thing (though a lousy singer).

And I stand by my statement that Melinda looks weird. Where is her neck???

I wrote about that too. I think she definitely needs to lose the jacket. Lift up her chin & pull back her shoulders.

It looks as though someone just pushed her head down to cover her neck (sorta like they would do to the bride & groom figures on a wedding cake).

I do like the way she sings though.

It wasnt the backstory that hooked me to Kellie Pickler....wasnt too much of her singing either....as Robin says....She is Blonde....:lmao:

Wow, it's funny how different people like different things...that's what makes the world go 'round. I thought last season was AWFUL. It was nothing compared to Season 4 which is by far my favorite. Not one performance last year blew me away...not one. This year I think that there are a few people who I like and am actually excited and looking forward to some good entertainment. Last year I was frankly bored. I think LeKisha's performance was better than anything we saw all last year.

Hope you get into this year a little more, you seem to ejoy Idol.

hehehehe!!! DD you crack me up! Though I pointed out a few pages ago that I felt this season was lacking the 'hottie" factor as well.

She was hot but I was trying to broaden my range to Brunettes so Robin wouldnt be so mad at me...:lmao:

Take THAT, Dan....

:lmao: :yay: :dance3: :rotfl2: :cool1:

So last night I thought Melinda and Lakisha were fantastic - my favorite is probably Leslie, because I like her personality and her jazzy voice, but what a bad song choice for her....watching this show, you would think the contestants over the past six seasons are given a list of only 50 or so songs to choose from. I don't think it's wise to pick a tune that helped catapult a previous contestant to the top. Watching Leslie all I could think about was how much better Kelly Clarkson sang that song, just like how last night my brain kept comparing Sanjaya and Chris R to Elliott Yamin since they picked songs that he had done so well, just a year ago!
Really, KUDOS to Blake and Chris S for picking unusual songs that had never been performed before.

Surprisingly, I didn't hate Antonella. Not a great song to show off your pipes, but she did change the song up from the original towards the end. I really don't like Gina and Sabrina - can't take Gina's attitude, especially since her performance was kind of unmemorable. And Sabrina is a very good singer, but watching her all I see is every musical theater college major I have ever met. Too polished for me, I guess.

Something I've noticed about a lot of contestants this year - look how many list their job as 'musician' or 'singer' already. Several already have myspace music pages or even full blown websites. I am much more fond of the whole "well, I work in a drugstore and have only ever sung publicly at karaoke at my local bar" type stories. Oh well, it won't affect my voting, I guess I'm just into the whole 'diamond in the rough' type backstory.

Sorry this is so long winded...back to work! (and by 'work' i mean 'reading the 15 pages of this thread that have appeared since last night') ;)

Do ya'll sit in front of the tv with laptops or something? :happytv:

My favs, LaKisha and Melinda, did not disappoint me! Way to go!
