American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread Part 3

You're kidding, right?:confused3
Taylor couldn't dance to save his life, his singing was good but not great. I will say he was a really good performer with an interesting personality, which is what got him the prize. Unfortunately, no one is buying his CD! :confused3

Couldn't have said it better Mrs. Mud. :thumbsup2

I never had anything against Taylor - seemed like a fun guy with a good voice. Just wasn't my choice - but then again, I usually end up picking the 2nd, 3rd or 4th place person as my favorite. ;)

Since this whole season has been a snoozefest-- why don't they either boot all of them-- or call it a three way tie (which would be something lame AI would do) and scrap the season!

I can't wait until Season 7 already. I hope that things are changed.

These things could include:

Limits of votes per night
Voting but with judges getting final decision (doesn't dancing with the stars do this?)

Strictly amateur performers - no background singers, albums as a kid, touring, or even winning pageants/contests where prize money is involved-- NOTHING!

Starting the finalist pool at a lower number instead of 24-- maybe 10. This way the performers could be more hungry for a deal.

Only the top 5 go on tour--no more calling it in once you get to the top 10/12
Guest judges on the shows, not only on audition cities

Limited access to bio/personal stories. I personally liked that they limited the personal information this year. I got tired of hearing all the sob stories last year.

No not kidding. I thought Taylor had a great voice. and his dancing is better than anything we have seen this season or the previous season.

I think this is what made the contestants so much better last year. We really got to know thm throught the season. not just in the final 4 like we did this season. that puts it more on a personal level and you get to really like a person. That can be the only reason someone would like Elliott last season. :rotfl2:

I do agree with some of this - especially limiting the number of calls and letting the judges vote count for something. On DWTS - the judges vote counts for 50%.

It's going to be hard to limit it to a total amateur. I mean - someone who has NEVER won a contest or taken a dime for their singing? :confused3 For example, my husband is considered an amateur - definately not a professional - but he sings in a classic rock band and has for 10 years - for pay. They've never recorded a CD, but they're a popular "club" band in this neck of the woods. If this were a rule, it would wipe out nearly everyone who has competed and won in the past six years.

If so, I do not understand how anyone can deny that Melinda is the best vocalist. She has never had a bad or even mediocre performance.

I like Jordin (who is only 17), I like Blake, too--but Melinda sings the best. :thumbsup2

Although Melinda does sing the best, I don't care for her voice. Vocal gymnastics aside, I have found myself wanting to listen to Blake and Jordin's songs again and again- never had that desire with Melinda. I just don't see her selling many cd's- I do think she'll do great on Broadway.

In DWTS I believe they add the judges scores to the call in votes, and votes are limited.

24 is ok, but no more even number of guys and girls..go back to what worked in the beginning ...just the best singers and bring back the WILD CARD! (plus the judges got to keep 1 each that was voted off)

Guest judges, I loved when they did that!

And I agree, keep the personal stuff limited. I really didn't need to know about Kelly Picklers convict dad (except it was supposed to make us feel sorry for her)

I still haven't had a chance to watch the videos or listen yet so I'm not going to pipe in on that.

For those who can't see the kelly video if you give me till this afternoon I can gave it on my computer in a playable format. THe way it was set up was in a mother/daughter way. The song was done perfectly and you think about it five years ago Kelly was gushing about Reba being her Idol and now she's one of her close friends and she's worked with her.

Ok, I would allow singers for club bands that have not put out an commercial album.

Paid bar/local bands, singers, entertainers ok, but you can not have a record deal.

I get so sick of hearing about how some contestants (Melinda and that other guy) were background singers, Jordin put out albums already, and Blake was just some guy who worked at a big box electronics store who loved music. Doesn't Jordin/Melinda already have an unfair advantage?

Although Melinda does sing the best. . .

I guess that was really my point. . .she does sing the best. :thumbsup2 I hear ya', I enjoy the other two as well.

I more or less felt that because Jordin is only 17, ;) she would have a few more years to shoot for her dreams. Also, because of her age (17), she would most likely be better off without the AI win. Blake, while I enjoy him, is not in the same league with the ladies and would probably be the most constrained by the AI contracts.

Melinda is older and may not have as many future options as the other two. She would be the one to benefit most from an AI machine and is technically the best vocalist.

All of that, and I just like Melinda best. . . :goodvibes

Yeah, yeah, we all know how much you hate Elliott...
however, HIS CD has gotten some great critical reviews...

OK, I think I am losing my mind. Didn't Melinda flub an entire line of "Woman"?? :confused3

The line that ends up "9 to 5"....I am sure she wasn't actually saying words and she had a paniced look on her face. But the judges didn't say anything and I didn't read anything about it either.

Have I gone loopy???

They all have bright futures, no matter who wins.

For me, tonight is going to stink, there is no way around it. For the first time EVER, I am not okay with any of the contestants going home, KWIM? I've had these 3 as favorites from the start, so while I'm happy that it has come down to them, I'm miserable because one has to go.

OKay I listened to the songs. Blake and Jordin were my favorites. Melinda just didn't wow me for some reason.

I'm rooting for Blake and Jordin, but I think going home will be Blake.

They all are talented but I'm just not into the season as much this year.

I want to hear Melinda sing "Gimme a break". I SWEAR she sounds just like Nell Carter, to me! I can't even listen to her sing now without thinking that.

I actually miss getting to know that contestants. I'm not talking about the sob stories. I just like knowing a little background about them. Other than the fact that Jordin is only 17, (in case anyone didn't know) I don't KNOW anything about her. I know that Melinda was a backup singer, but that's it. I don't know anything about Blake. Sure, I could go read up on them, I guess, but I don't wanna. I want to SEE it. Hmph!

I was going to post my thoughts on last night's show, but RyMickey said everything I was thinking. I agree completely with everything you say here. :thumbsup2

Aw...thanks.

How can say you were cringing when Blake was singing and then say he was the best....:confused3

He doesnt have the voice no where near the other 2 and doesnt need to be final 2 but I guess the way the voting goes he does deserve.

I think he came back with his last two songs last night. Even the first one where the high notes were somewhat cringe-inducing wasn't that bad. I have not been a Blake fan, but his last two songs last night were some of my favorite performances I've seen on Idol this season. Maybe it's just because they were more modern and that they were music I actually listen to, but Blake's final two songs were great, IMO.

No, I think you are right. I noticed the scrambled words and especially the look of panic...The judges didn't mention it, of course. They are really non-critical of her.

I like all of them, but I find myself rooting for Blake 'cause he seems the most genuine and I think he has an untapped, different talent. I always remember his performances. I can't name three songs that Melinda has sung; she just isn't that memorable to me. I think she technically has a great voice but not that entertaining in an AI way. Jordin will be fine; I think she has a great voice but her choices haven't been 100%.
We'll see...

No, I think you are right. I noticed the scrambled words and especially the look of panic...The judges didn't mention it, of course. They are really non-critical of her.

Exactly. I mean, was I the only one who heard the 'clunker' during her first song? DH and I looked at each other like :scared1: ! The judges must not have noticed it either.

And when Jordin was told what her first song was going to be, she did the girlish "Yay" (with hand clap)...come to find out she had never even heard of the song! :confused3

I thought Blake was great last night -- loved the last 2 songs. I really don't care who wins. I love Blake's originality, but if he doesn't win, that's fine because he'll have more freedom to choose which label to record under. :thumbsup2

I agree...I don't think they should do the even number of guys/girls thing. If they wanted to make the competition even better, they should pick the best singers possible, even if that means 10 girls and 2 guys, or vice versa, rather than filling their gender quota so they have a balance for the tours.

I also agree that they should bring back the Wild Card, and you bring up a good point about that giving the judges a bit more control over who the finalists are. Don't forget that both Clay Aiken and Kimberley Locke were wild cards, and they both made it to the top 3 of season 2. They would have been passed over if it weren't for the Wild Card show. I was so glad when Clay was picked for a wild card spot; I really liked him right from the beginning.

I actually liked the personal stuff. I like to know a bit about the contestants' backgrounds. It makes the show more interesting for me, and it makes the contestants seem more 3-dimensional, IMO. It doesn't sway my voting or who I think is the better singer, but I see how it could for other people.
