Skipper's Canteen...overhyped?

MK is mainly for snacks to me at this point.

Yeah this is the case for me too. I'm not even asking for anything crazy in terms of flavor but I've had meals at MK table service restaurants that didn't even have salt or pepper....the bare minimum.

Our family used to enjoy it many years ago. My wife still does, but myself and two kids now find it only meh. We did all love the Brazilian cheese bread which is basically what three of the four of us ordered the last time we visited. I know that it is no longer on the menu. Has anyone been recently where they have requested it and were not able to get it?

We went 3 years ago and thought it was ok, not bad but not awesome.

We're only going this year because we're going on a party day in the heat of august and we DON'T want Liberty Tree Tavern in that weather.

Pão de queijo has always been a “secret” menu item, I cannot ever remember it being listed on the actual printed menu

The whole Lion Fish was spectacular. It was very lightly battered and served upright 3-D on a platter. Young DS ordered it the first time to be adventurous and picked it clean. Delicious! Ordered it every time after too, later learning he was doing his part to remove an invasive species from Florida.

I feel like it's one of the least hyped restaurants in the parks. There is a reason you can pretty much always get a table.

Thus it's not overhyped because it essentially has no hype lol.

We ate there a few times when it first opened up but haven't been since the trying times. To be fair, I am rarely in MK after lunch and don't want a large sit down meal at lunch. I think my son and his family ate there a year ago and I didn't hear anything bad from them. Truth time, I've been going to WDW since 1983 and have never eaten at Liberty Tree or Columbia Harbour House or Crystal Palace. LTT and CP because I don't do AYCE or Buffets, I just don't eat a lot at one time. CHH because I'm not a sea food fan.

Well for a while it was regarded as a hidden gem that typically was also easier to book. It was an interesting menu, strong value, and convenient. After all the menu changes, the only remaining highlight is booking ease.

We got a lunch reservation here. And I really enjoyed the campy waitress jokes and stuff. The ambience is also very cool. Just disappointed in the food. The secret cheese bread was amazing, and GF for my wife. But my meal was just meh for the big TS pricing. I had much better at Liberty Tree. Anyone else feel this way?

Imagine it without any campy waitress jokes. The server acted just like a server at Liberty Tree, and since I was in the little room (library?), I didn't see anyone else enjoying any jokes. And please be kind when I say that I wasn't Wowed by the cheese bread. Should I duck and cover now? I was so disappointed since I love the Jungle Cruise and their corny jokes. It was definitely a one and done for me.

Haha I had the same thought and fear about mentioning it

I realized it wasn’t up my family’s alley when we had a bread assortment somewhere and those were the only rolls left at the end of our meal. It’s OK but we enjoy other types of bread more.

I really like it. I usually get the steak. It's the one table service restaurant inside MK that actually seasons the food (with more than just salt).

I ate there for the first and only time in January and it was fine. I got the pork chop and my partner's vegetarian curry was really delicious from the portion I tried. The space is great and as others have mentioned the easter eggs are fantastic. But it was the only table service in Magic Kingdom that appealed to me (don't need to pay extra for character dining, hearty pot roasts/turkey/etc are not my jam) and now I'll probably just do snacks or quick services in MK. If I need table service I'll head to a resort or another park. I would go back again if someone wanted to, it wasn't a bad experience, just not anything special.

This is exactly why we’re hoping to try the new Beak & Barrel in late September. Light bites (octopus!) is more enticing than anything Magic Kingdom has on offer. Skipper Canteen was just ok last trip; we usually hit up a monorail resort for lunch.

No reason to go here anymore when Wailulu is a boat/monorail ride away.

Until it gets WDW-ified. Which might not happen (after all, Hacienda still exists) but I would not bet on it.

I don't think it's over-hyped, I really don't hear much about it.

We've eaten there a couple times and I really want to like it, but to me it's below mediocre.

The idea for the atmosphere is good, but the whole package doesn't live up to the backstory.

Nowadays my favorite restaurants on MK days are not in the MK.
