American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread Part 3

question for everyone:

Did anyone else think Kelly Clarkson looked pregnant? Was it just a bad angle?

What do you all think? :confused3

I guess I'm in the minority here as I liked the show last night.

Thought Green Day was AWESOME!!!

Loved Sanjaya and Joe Perry - cool!!

I even loved Kelly Clarkson' new song and thought she sounded very good. Carrie too was very good - congrats on selling 6 million CD's - WOW!!

Thought Blake was so much better than Doug E. Fresh. :)

Loved seeing all the past IDOL winners on stage.

No surprise at the end - CONGRATS to JORDIN!! She really deserved to win.

See ya'll next year!!

:thumbsup2 I enjoyed the show too.

At no point did I think she looked pregnant... Did you see the second top she had on? Showed more skin than not... no pregnancy there I'd say!

I didn't waste my time...I mean I didn't watch last night. But I hear that Jordin won. How old is she?

Well, we all know her age, but I did not realize she is a JUNIOR in high school!! She was 16 last summer when she tried out! How is she EVER going to get a high school diploma? She's going to have to hire a full time tutor to tour with her next year.... She'll go nowhere if she doesn't tour next winter....

You're right. I've followed everything Taylor has been doing since he won. It has been a year and he has had no breaks, NONE. Not even remotely. Here is how it has gone for him and I expect that it will be the same for Jordin. Maybe even more so since Taylor kind of took his time on the CD.

  • Extensive press tour
  • Rehearsed AI tour
  • Toured with AI through Sept.
  • Directly into studio to write and record. Finished CD early Dec.
  • Another press tour to promote CD
  • Toured the CD beginning early Feb- this is still going on and is scheduled to continue into the fall

She's looking at a earning GED, I'm sure.

:thumbsup2 I enjoyed the show too.

Me too! I loved all the variety. I wasn't actually all that excited to watch the finale, but really enjoyed it! I think this may be the best one yet as far as all the entertainment.

She's toured before. I'm sure she'll just do whatever she has been doing. It isn't like she was a normal go to school everyday all her life student.

I thought the show was fantastic! A couple of thoughts:

Loved the Beatles theme. Loved the first number with Jordin and Blake, these two kids are great performers. They are like pros already imo.

Carrie Underwood has an amazing voice. Not sure how I missed that when she was on AI, I was not one of her fans and livid when she one over Bo. But everytime I've seen her since I have been put in my place. There is something about her I don't like though, maybe she seems snobby or cold?

Love Kelly Clarkson. She made a much better wardrobe decision since last time around on AI too. :p

I'm old enough to remember when Bette Midler could sing. WTH happened to her???? She still looks good tho, hasn't hardly aged at all.

Glad to see Paula back in her usual wacked out state of mind. :rotfl: Now that is the Paula we all know and love. :rotfl:

Lakeesha and Melinda: These two divas are incredible. Love them both and would buy their CDs in a heartbeat. I'm wishing them both much success. I think both have the chops to follow in the footsteps of the great Gladys Knight, who was in her usual amazing form last night.

Chris Sligh: Not feeling the love. Wondered why he got more airtime than the others too. :confused3

Jordin and Ruben: Fantastic. I sure hope they decide to record something together.

Taylor: What a disappointment he's turned out to be. :( I loved him on AI, but I just can't get with him anymore. Weird how that turned out.

Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett: Pros, through and through. All 3 brought tears to my eyes with their performances.

Overall, I am glad Jordin won. I think she probably fits the American Idol mold better than Blake. I liked them both though, and would have been happy with whoever won. This season was not my favorite...but I'll definately be back next year!

Ckay, since you follow Taylor, how many albums has he sold? Do you know by chance I was just curious?

And nobody did answer why Kelly Clarkson was feuding with Clive?

Okay forever asked about the whole Kelly/Clive thing, here's what's going on. Clive is a sexist old man. He praises Chris for his writing but wanted to scrap Kelly's newest album because she wrote it and there was no Since You Been Gone Type Song. He didn't even want her last album to have Because of You which has went onto win several writing awards.

Here's the whole speech:

So here's this year's report card for the American Idol album franchise. The big news has been the huge explosion of Chris Daughtry. Yes, Taylor Hicks' new single of "Heaven Knows" can still take him and his platinum album further; and "Love Story" can still do it for Katherine McPhee, but it's been Daughtry who has broken through as the entire music industry's biggest selling artist of the year. Daughtry's album is still in the top 10 after 6 months. It's spawned two number one singles that he wrote or co-wrote, "Home" and "It's Not Over," and it's sales are now over two and a half million albums.

Now contrary to popular belief, that's really what album sales are all about - new hit songs. Yes, Simon and Randy and Paula have done an absolutely amazing job, really unprecedented. We in our industry know the job of discovering talent that eventually rises to the top of this phenominal competition, like Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. So I'm here to thank them and to toast them, but then in turn everyone in American Idol must toast that much too often underappreciated professional songwriters. Those that have greatly enhanced the American Idol album franchise. Right from the very beginning, by writing number one hit songs for Clay Aiken, through "Since U Been Gone" and "Breakaway" for Kelly Clarkson's huge Breakaway album... Now right on top of unanimous critical raves for her starring performance in The Color Purple, Fantasia has a brand new hit song of her own, "When I See You," so her new album is once again headed up the charts.

Which brings me to a very special moment right now that seems to sum all of this up. You, the judges and you out there in America, first discovered a wonderful new talent and then those professional songwriters, this time from Nashville, wrote truly great songs - "Jesus Take the Wheel," "Don't Forget to Remember Me," "Before He Cheats" and "Wasted" - this combustable combination of the big new American Idol star plus the right producer, the right arranger, the right songs, all have led to my presenting here tonight a special certified award representing six million album sales of her debut album in just the United States alone, to the artist that has won the Grammy Award, the CMA Award, and just about every other Best New Artist and Female Vocalist Award for 2007. Ladies and Gentlemen, Carrie Underwood.

Okay now onto the show.

Loved Kelly's first performance, definately her best yet of this song.
I loved her Sgt. Pepper performance.

Green Day never liked them.

Tony Bennett was good but bored me.

I didn't even recongize Bette Middler.

What was up with Sanajaya. Give me Brandon instead.

Blake I loved Blake's performance.

Jordin/Blake before they won, I felt like I was having deja vu of season 1 again.

The whole Beatles medley was truly not fair. Some had longer parts then the others and it should of been split up equally if you ask me.

Definately wanted to see more from the contestants than what we did.

As for the past runner ups not being there from what I understood they weren't invited.

I think I about summed up about how I felt.

I bet it hurt her Vegas show, that is really odd. She may have been sick.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does. It's a shame though, because her show would fit perfectly there. It's a little burlesque and pretty theatrical.

She's never been the best singer ever, but she didn't sound at the top of her game at all to me.

Ckay, since you follow Taylor, how many albums has he sold? Do you know by chance I was just curious?

It did pretty well right out of the gate...debuted at #2, I think. It went Platinum, what is that?

I read a quote somewhere where he said he doesn't expect to be a mega-selling artist. He's just happy to be able to do what he do & I'm happy for him. Happy for Daughtry as well, he deserves it.

That was a good article on Kelly Clarkson. It just makes me want to buy her cd even more. We can't all be happy all the time. Everybody goes through Sh!t in their lives. I think expressing it through music is therapeutic for these musicians. Look at Nick Lachey. His song was a sad, a little dark, but very successful.

I will say for those who want, two clips were released via promosquad of Haunted and Can I have Kiss off Kelly's new album. They are up on youtube I believe or I can pm the direct links to the video.

Taylor Hicks albums has sold 673,000 copies. It was certified platinum (1 million sold) because that's how many albums have been shipped to stores.

Daughtry's album has sold 2.36 million.

Kellie Pickler has sold 512,000 copies.

Carrie has sold 5.33 million copies. It was certified 6 times platinum because of shipments.

I liked last nights show... sure it could've been edited better, the loser awards was only FUNNY last year and where was CLAY???

Oh well...

For the olld school AA that I am I was THRILLED to see Gladys and Smokey! :thumbsup2 The old school religion AA in me was drooling over Melinda and the Winans!! :thumbsup2
The old Soul Patrol in me LOVED seeing my man!!! :dancer:
And the OLD in me loved seeing Tony Bennett!! :thumbsup2

The OLD OLD in me wanted the Beatles thing to be better but it wasn't.

BtW, Jennasis, my parent dedicated "She's Leaving Home" to me when I FINALLY moved out of their house :rotfl2: ... I swear I never heard that angle about the abortion!! Where did it come from? All I ever heard was that he wrote it after reading a story about a runaway?

BEST OF THE NIGHT...besides my man  ... was Melinda. She looked AMAZING!! Her voice was incredible and she showed the professional she was. She'll be a superstar!!!

WORST OF THE NIGHT ... Sanjaya and the LOSER awards. HOW did I know they'd find a way to get a barely clad ANTONELLA on the screen??? :rolleyes1

All in all this show seemed like an afterthought, not the finale of the highest rated show on TV. All I have to look forward to now is Top Chef because I cannot STAND that stupid "So You Think You Can Dance"... :scared: ugh...

Till next January, everyone!!

I'm in the minority, but I actually enjoyed the finale last night. I liked Jordin/Blake singing "I Saw Her Standing There". They were cute together. The Jordin/Reuben duet was terrific.
Melinda performing with BeBe and CeCe Winans was outstanding.
Coolest moment of the evening: Joe Perry! Spoiled, of course, by the fact that he was performing with Sanjaya. It annoyed me that contestant #7 got his own song, but contestant #4 (Lakisha) got nothing.

Some of my thoughts on other posters' comments:
And where's Kat McPhee? Not that I want to hear her whiney voice or anything...but I'm just curious....
I've actually been wondering this all season. This year they had performances from Kellie Pickler, Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks from Season 5. So that's #1, #3, #4, and #6. No Katherine? Not that I missed her as I was never a fan but it is weird. :confused3
She's the American Idol but they're both winners!! I'm bettin' he is happy that he never has to sing that song (the ballad) again! He doesn't have to, does he??!!
I actually thought that Blake looked relieved that he didn't win.
Oh, well. The finale was boring. Really, not a thing was exciting tonight. No big surprise guests. I was waiting for Paul McCartney to come out at the end of the Beatles medley -- what was the point of that medley if Paul -- or at the very least Ringo ;) -- wasn't going to come out and sing? Who cared about that? What a time waster!
This week is the 40th anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was just a tribute.
I bet it hurt her Vegas show, that is really odd. She may have been sick.
Bette was, admittedly, awful. But the thing that I noticed was that she was fiddling with her audio pack that was behind her several times. Is it possible that she wasn't able to hear herself? That may have had something to do with it.
That's because she was sobbing throught it!!
And, as one who called her on what I still feel were coached tears during Tuesday night's performance, last night's emotion seemed completely real.
Congratulations to Jordin!
Gladys Knight singing with Melinda and LaKisha.
In my opinion, the absolute highlight of the night. I wish Lakisha would have gotten a bit more time to sing last night. She was #4, for goodness sakes. She should have had her own performance.
Gladys Knight looked great. Smokey's had a bit too much plastic surgery if you ask me, but Gladys, well whatever work she's had done--we need to find out who her surgeon is!! She's still got it. (Smokey sounded good though!)

They did a very good job of hiding the strings that were supporting Smokey Robinson and Tony Bennett. Man-I thought they were going to collapse on stage.
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Taylor: What a disappointment he's turned out to be. :( I loved him on AI, but I just can't get with him anymore. Weird how that turned out.
So, are you ready to turn over that sweat soaked bandana to Robin? ;)

I actually enjoyed Taylor's first performance last night; not so much his work during the Sgt. Pepper medley.

All I have to look forward to now is Top Chef because I cannot STAND that stupid "So You Think You Can Dance"... :scared: ugh...
Robin,
Considering that Top Chef pretty much jumped the shark this past season, that may not be a whole heck of a lot to look forward to. I'll be watching it too but my hopes are not high.
