American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread Part 3

I was thinking....and I'm a Blake fan, but.....

Last night I was all hung up on "not fair, not fair - they made Blake sing that dorky song that they KNEW would not suit him. Why didn't they make Jordin sing a dance song?"

But then I remembered last year.

They gave Taylor an even DORKIER song (even he hated it and won't now touch it with a 10-foot pole). But Taylor...he fixed it up and nailed it.

I don't want to rehash last year, necessarily, but it just kind of shows that Blake, bless his heart, could have done something.....anything.....to fix up that song. Good lord, he SHOULD have beat boxed on it, he'd have nothing to lose!

If this was a singing competition (which I always thought it was), Melinda would be standing on that stage right now with Jordin.
IMO, if this truly was a singing competition, Melinda would have been standing on that stage with Lakisha! Jordin has a nice voice, but she was third to both of them.

Although I did vote for Blake last night, I almost hope Jordin wins so Blake doesn't have to cut that awful song as his first single.

Usually, I'm disappointed that the finale means the end of AI for the year. This year I'm ready for it to be over.

While I'm at it, here are my five favorite performances by the contestants this season:
Jennifer Holliday's I Am Telling You (That I'm Not Going) performed by Lakisha
Bon Jovi's This Ain't A Love Song performed by Lakisha
Aretha Frankllin's Since You Been Gone performed by Melinda (Yup. Her first night's performance was actually my favorite.)
Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory performed by Phil
Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity performed by Blake (as I mentioned above)

So....
What are your fave five?
I'm also bumping my own post here. Doesn't anybody want to play along? Maybe that just proves how bad this season really was.:confused3

C'mon people...
What's your fave five?

And right there is the reason that I prefer Blake over Jordin. People can chant "oh it's a singing competition" over and over again, but when it comes time to sell CDs and concert tickets (especially), it's the performer who is going to have the edge. Think not? Take a peek at the recording artists who have been around for years and years. It's been the charisma that carried them, not their stellar vocals. I'm thinking Bon Jovi (of course;) ) and U2 and Billy Joel and the Stones and Aerosmith....
I was going to comment, but Cmbar did it for me!

First off I like both Blake and Jordin. Second did you not hear Martina Mcbride tell each of those contestants its about standing in a place and singing those songs from your heart. Martina is one of the best voices on the planet and has sold a gazillion records and her concerts are always sold out, so she must know what she is talking about. Jordin can get away with standing there and singing BECAUSE she can SING. Most of the songs she sings comes with emotion. She has a cry in her voice and it seems to me that she can get that because she might just be an emotional person.

And to the posters who think she is faking her crying I totally disagree. First people say she is too "perky" and then now they complain when she shows emotion. Also, anyone out there that sings for a hobby or living ever had that experience when a song or moment while singing completely takes you over. I'd like to think that happened to her.
Don't forget Celine. She doesn't bounce & jump all over the stage either. She is a great singer & performer whose concerts are continually sold out.

LOL on the bands and longevity and them being performers..my DH always laughs at me because I don't like the Stones, Aerosmith or U2. I like to watch a person sing not run all over the place, or have all kinds of things going on..I find that distracting. I guess I can't concentrate on 2 things at once! I didn't like Bon Jovi in the big hair days, I like them so much better now.
LOL - I could have written this post. I don't care for the Stones or any of the others you mentioned you either. Didn't like Bon Jovi in their 80's either, but really like them now. :)

Ex-squeeze me???????????? DAughtry performed last night??????????? stoopid tivo cut off the last moments of the show after the competitors were done singing. grrrr...
Not sure about Tivo, but with a DVR you can program your machine to somehow tape a few minutes at both the beginning & the end of the show. I used to get so annoyed when the end of something cut off while they were doing previews or finishing up. Then my DD's showed me how to "customize" your recording.

Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" performed by Phil
"My Funny Valentine" performed by Melinda
"You'll Never Walk Alone" performed by Jordin
"As Long As He Needs Me" performed by Melinda

I don't like Jordin's voice. It has always been too screechy for me. IMHO there is nothing unique or distinctive about it. I won't be buying any Jordin music. I have already bought some of Blake's performances and I do look forward to future releases.

Same here! I was just saying how I would never ever buy anything of Jordins, but can't wait to get Blakes stuff!!

C'mon people...
What's your fave five?

OK, here's mine.

5. A J Tabaldo - Feelin Good. Got voted off way too early ::yes::

4. Chris Sligh - Kiss From a Rose. He sang that at his audition. Should have sung it in the show!

3. (Tie) Melinda Doolittle - As Long As He Needs Me and Jordin Sparks - I Who Have Nothing.

Blake Lewis - I Need To Know

Phil Stacy - Either version of Blaze of Glory but I think I actually liked his exit version even more. It's the first and only time I cried when someone got voted off.

My fav five performances from Season 6 in no particular order:

1. Lakisha-"I Am Telling You"

2. Blake-"Virtual Insanity"

3. Blake-"You Give Love a Bad Name"

4. Phil-"Blaze of Glory"

5. Chris Daughtry-"Home" !!!!!

This has got to be one of the quietest threads after an Idol finale that we've ever had. I sure hope they pick better talent next year! Usually there are pages and pages of arguing. No one seems to really care one way or another this year.

Yep...I kept thinking the same thing. I remember having to search for this thread on Tuesday mornings. Usually, there's anticipation for the show, but not this year. Oh, well. Unfortunately, I'm not tired of the show and I know they'll hook me next year, too.

Personally, the final doesn't feel like a final. The best singers aren't up there. Jordin is fantastic, she has a huge future in front of her. Blake IS fun to watch, I really like him. But Melinda had the best voice of the bunch, and it's really kind of boring without her there for me.

Maybe it should have been Melinda and Sanjaya. Melinda - powerhouse voice. Sanjaya - a variety of hairstyles, you never know what is coming next. I think it'd have been more interesting.

Last years finale was yuky too! BUT WE WILL ALL WATCH IT!:rotfl:

Top performances

1. Jordin. I Who Have nothing

2. Phil. Blaze of Glory

3. Lakisha. And I am Telling You (the Dreamgirls song)

4. Blake. Time of The Season

5. Gina. I'll Stand By You

While I liked Melinda's voice I can't remember a single one of her songs or performances.:confused3

Spoilers are flying over on idolforums. All of it is speculation of course but highlight if you want to see who's RUMORED to be performing tonight.

Doug E Fresh. Green Day will be the surprise guest on American Idol's star-studded grand finale, airing Wednesday night, May 23, an Idol insider tells Star. The band will be the last act of the night, following Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry and Gladys Knight. American Idol alumni Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and last year's winner Taylor Hicks will also perform.

YMMV :confused3 I'll keep checking to see if any other names pop up.

Ugh, you are right. Last year wasn't so hot either. I think Sanjaya should sing Somewhere over the Rainbow. :) I was SO tired of it by the finale last year, but I could use a good laugh.

Many of the songs she sung were ones I was unfamiliar with. (like the Nutbush City Limits song). But she knocked them all out!

At the end, did you hear BOTH Randy and Simon remind EVERYONE that this is a SINGING competition??? :confused3
I think it is important to keep those comments in their proper context. Read them as part of this longer, implied statement: "All other factors held constant, in the end, this is a SINGING competition." It basically means that Blake and Jordin are roughly comparable in terms of "their cumulative discipline-specific scores". Sure, Blake is a little more innovative, and Jordin evokes more emotion and has a better voice, but with regard to everything, overall, they're saying that the two are pretty-much even: THEN, in THAT case, the determining factor must be which of the two provides the technically superior vocal performance.

It is not enough to be a good singer -- you need to have the capacity to be a star. Figure that being the better singer clinches the win in case of a tie.

Ex-squeeze me???????????? DAughtry performed last night??????????? stoopid tivo cut off the last moments of the show after the competitors were done singing. grrrr...
Don't blame TiVo: The show ran long, and Fox gave no notice of that.

That's one of the reasons why TiVo added the extend live program feature -- when you set up American Idol and similar programs (if properly identified by the network as "live"), TiVo will ask you, specifically, whether you want to add a cushion to the end of your recording.

That's true. While I want Jordin to win. it's no biggie if she doesn't. I was the same last year with Taylor and Katherine. I think the powers that be at Idol need to go back to the original format of the show. No more 6 guys, 6 girls. Just pick the good singers regardless of their sex. So if the top 12 are all male or all female, so be it.
I don't think that's the issue. Having a beat-boxer compete against a diva, and in general, having crooners, rockers, balladeers, and so forth, all competing against each other is a recipe for mediocrity. Competition helps drive competitors to superior quality, but who were the competitors this year -- instead we ended up with the safe bets in a wide variety of musical styles. AI needs to aim for one style and evaluate performance based on achievement in that style. That's the only way the show will retain quality after its for few years.

I was beginning to think that Daughtry wasn't performing since Ryan kept yakking and it was like 2 minutes until 8:00.........I thought for sure FOX was going to cut Daughtry's performance - glad they didn't as he ROCKED!!

I was a Blake fan the entire season, I voted for him the entire season including last night but I know that JORDIN will win - that girl can SING!!!

I'm looking forward to all the performances and duets tonight - should be a very good show.

Last night was a disappointment for me. Blake was ok. Decent for the first two songs and poor to middling with the third. Might have been better without the background vocals but it's hard to say. Jordin didn't really impress me either. She picked the first two songs and I hated them both. She did better than Blake with the last song but she's wasn't that great. And that song was just terrible. :headache:

I'm torn. I like Blake so much better than Jordin but I don't want him to win because I think his cd will better if he doesn't. But I don't want Jordin to win either because she's pretty forgettable. Talented yes, memorable no.

I guess that means I vote Clay!
