American Idol Season 6: The Official Thread Part 3

BUT they never call her on it like they did the other ones. They also never gave her any grief over STANDING still for every song, she never performed just stood in front of the mike, won't that be exciting to watch for a 90 minute concert.

First off I like both Blake and Jordin. Second did you not hear Martina Mcbride tell each of those contestants its about standing in a place and singing those songs from your heart. Martina is one of the best voices on the planet and has sold a gazillion records and her concerts are always sold out, so she must know what she is talking about. Jordin can get away with standing there and singing BECAUSE she can SING. Most of the songs she sings comes with emotion. She has a cry in her voice and it seems to me that she can get that because she might just be an emotional person.

And to the posters who think she is faking her crying I totally disagree. First people say she is too "perky" and then now they complain when she shows emotion. Also, anyone out there that sings for a hobby or living ever had that experience when a song or moment while singing completely takes you over. I'd like to think that happened to her. Melinda had some of those times. It's a moment when you basically have an outer body experience. If you haven't experienced it, it is kinda like a high you get when you run or exercise. It is a type of uphoria that you feel when you connect with a song. And to think of all that has been put on this 17 year old girl. All the expectation and responsibility is a lot for her to handle. In fact don't 17 year old girls cry at pretty much everything? But to have finally come to the end of four amazing and exhausting months. I would be blubbering too.

Blake has great performance skills, but you REALLY have to like the beat boxing and him bopping. It may just really come down to style. I really like to watch someone who can sing. I enjoyed Blake and routed for him when he did well and voted for him too. But I would be one of those people that would be really tired of the beat-boxing thing. No matter who wins they both will go far.

Can someone post the phone numbers for Blake and Jordin? I'm out of the country and the hotel doesn't get Fox so I have to wait until I get home to watch the shows but I want to vote....

Yeah - I'm voting for Jordin. Hit or miss - once I'll get through & then I won't.

Me too...better luck on her third number. I'd get through 3 or 4 times in a row, then it would take a while before I could get through again. (I even threw in a few votes for Blake tonight...the kids like him)

And right there is the reason that I prefer Blake over Jordin. People can chant "oh it's a singing competition" over and over again, but when it comes time to sell CDs and concert tickets (especially), it's the performer who is going to have the edge. Think not? Take a peek at the recording artists who have been around for years and years. It's been the charisma that carried them, not their stellar vocals. I'm thinking Bon Jovi (of course;) ) and U2 and Billy Joel and the Stones and Aerosmith....

LOL on the bands and longevity and them being performers..my DH always laughs at me because I don't like the Stones, Aerosmith or U2. I like to watch a person sing not run all over the place, or have all kinds of things going on..I find that distracting. I guess I can't concentrate on 2 things at once! I didn't like Bon Jovi in the big hair days, I like them so much better now.

You can't blame the singers for goodness sake. The sound people really stunk tonight. It's nice they got that great big auditorium but NONE of the songs could be heard. The music was way too loud to really hear how Blake and Jordin sang the songs. All I could figure is that the audience and judges heard the Lead vocals louder than we heard them.

I have sung in many bands and believe me if the sound people keep the instruments or the backup vocals too hot then the lead just doesn't sound as good. Those backup singers can't hear how they sound AGAINST the leads. They can only hear their monitors with most likely the instruments and their voices. Anyone who is good enough to sing backup will know not to outsing the lead. It is counterproductive. And the responsibility lies on the sound man. Just my opinion!

I agree, I know it is the sound people that screw things up sometimes. I also blame the producers/directors of the show, they should know how it sounds and tell the sound people to tone it down. It just seems like this year the back ground singers got a lot of attention.

Someone help me. I am in trouble!!!! I promised a friend that I would record the show on my DVR tonight and I just looked and nothing recorded. I don't know what happened. I turned on the t.v. at 6:30 to check and make sure that it was set to record and it was. I thought it was o.k. to turn it off, but I guess it's not! She's going to kill me.

Is there anyplace that I can download their performances. I have dial up, so it will take me all night, but I really don't want to break a promise.

Thanks for any help that I hope you can give me!

You could send her to my house, I have it on video...old VHS way of recording here.

I've seen Martina in concert and guess what? She pretty much stands there and sings. She might walk around a bit or dance a bit in place but that is it. AND I enjoyed every second of her show.

As for Blake. I agree he performs, he catches you attention, but I just don't get the thrill over his beat boxing that others do.

agree 110 percent.

based on tonight only Jordin should win this IF its a singing competiton. She did wipe the floor with Blake. Her vocals were superb. As for the background singers they drowned out both singers tonight. I really noticed it on Jordin's last song.

As for the last song. My wife who likes Blake said "that song is horrible". I said "nope just a horrible singer and if he was to beat box it you would forget that fact". Then when Jordin sang it she said "was that the same song cause that was good." I was like I rest my case.

As for her tears, given the time, Place, emotion and even the words of the song and the fact she is a teenage girl I totally believe her tears were genuine. I fault her none and if she did "PERFORM" the tears then hey all you Blake lovers who like him cause he is a performer should have loved it.

LETS GO JORDIN THE REAL SINGER OF THE TWO FINALIST.....:dance3:

The Finale - - AKA Who cares since Melinda isn’t here ;)

Blake Lewis
Song One – You Give Love a Bad Name
– Loved it the first time and liked it a lot this time. Not a whole lot to say ‘cause it was a rehash. I think he sang it decently.

Song Two – She Will Be Loved - And then, we see that Blake can’t really sing. I’m not sure why he chose this song…if only there wasn’t the high note in the chorus, it might’ve been okay. Still, this absolutely showed his weakness as a singer.

Jordin Sparks
Song One - Fighter
– Well, she’s no Christina Aguilera. There wasn’t the force (or something) that I felt this song needed. I don’t know, but her voice is kinda screechy to me…and it always has been. But I appreciate that she sang something modern since she’s only 17 (in case you didn’t know).

Song Two – A Broken Wing - I think this actually sounded better this time than last except for some wavering on the last note. See, Jordin’s a conundrum to me. Sometimes I think she’s got a great voice (like this time) and then other times I think she just isn’t that good (as is the case with song 1)

Song Three – This Is My Now
Sure, the Idol song this year is corny, but I actually didn’t think it was all that bad. I wasn’t disgusted hearing a “modern” singer like Blake sing it which he did admirably. I thought he sang it pretty well. The song fit Jordin pretty well and I thought she definitely did a better job than Blake with it. As far as whether this was good Jordin or screechy Jordin, I’d have to go with the former. I think she won the competition with the last 30 seconds…some great singing and then crying! She’s got it in the bag! (? I mean that both sarcastically and truthfully, if something can be both sarcastic and truthful)

Overall, I’d have loved to see Melinda in the finals, but Jordin should win this thing. Blake’s a one-trick pony who doesn’t have a great voice. While Jordin’s voice isn’t great, of the two in the competition, she should win.

Yippee Skippy, this lackluster season is nearly at an end. Last night, with one exception, Blake and Jordin tortured us through an hour of yawning and made me remember why I wished Melinda and Phil were the ones on the stage.

Blake 1: He did a repeat of You Give Love a Bad Name. I actually liked this performance better than the original. He was animated and fun and, for the first and only time tonight, I was entertained. He got a 10.

Jordin 1: Sang some ditty called Fire or should I say she shouted it. I didn’t like the song very much and I liked the way she did it even less. Jordin nearly got the dreaded mute button pushed. Randy raved because, after all, she is only 17. Didn’t work for me, she got a 6.

Blake 2: He did She Will Be Loved which surprisingly I had heard before. I gave the song an, Eh? and his vocal an OK. Blake is not a ballad singer. I could never picture him singing Moon River in a hotel lounge. Still it was alright if somewhat mediocre. He got an 8.

Jordin 2: She did Broken Wing. Another screamy rendition of a song I’m not sure she understands. At least this time she didn’t smile too much. I liked this number less than the first one and she got a 5.

Blake 3: He sang this year’s turkey, This Is My Now. It reminded me of a bad version of Do I Make You Proud only I sort of liked that. He was off key during the middle of the song and looked really uncomfortable trying to sell this number. I felt bad for him especially since this seemed to be such a chick song. A number like this would most likely work better for Jordin who the AI staff has been primping to win this for at least the last 5 weeks or since the first “She’s only 17” comment. Still, this was Blake’s weakest performance and he only got a 5.

Jordin 3: Her take on the turkey was somewhat better. She seemed to feel it more but the tears at the end… were they live or were they Memorex? The song still stinks but she wins this round with an 8.

Comment of the night: Can’t put it here but it was the dog one from Ryan.

Who I voted for:
Blake for about 20 minutes. Got thru on his line consistently for the first 10 and then started to get mostly busy signals.

Who I want to win: Don’t really care.

Can’t wait for Thursday night when So You Think You Can Dance starts up. :thumbsup2

Melinda was the best singer by far in this competition. But we all know this isn't a singing competition.

At the end, did you hear BOTH Randy and Simon remind EVERYONE that this is a SINGING competition??? :confused3

All I've heard the past few weeks on this board is how they want the "whole package", an entertainer - not just a singer, and that Melinda looked too old and didn't have enough "pizazz". And then last night Simon and Randy both said that it was a SINGING competiton within 60 seconds of each other.

If this was a singing competition (which I always thought it was), Melinda would be standing on that stage right now with Jordin. I think Blake is a little cutie and he has some great entertainment value - but he does NOT have a powerful voice and his vocal range is very limited.

I had accepted Melinda's graceful exit, but after hearing that "reminder" last night, it really upset me. :headache:

At this point, I don't care who wins - but based on singing, it would have to go to Jordin. After watching this show for 6 years, I've learned that it's not based on singing talent, but on popularity.

As for last night, the best for me was seeing Chris back on the stage. Was it last week that Maroon 5 performed? Daughtry blew them away last night. :thumbsup2

Ex-squeeze me???????????? DAughtry performed last night??????????? stoopid tivo cut off the last moments of the show after the competitors were done singing. grrrr...

Anyway, I voted for Blake 21 times and then got bored with dialing. I'm annoyed that I actually voted more for this year's lame duck entrants than I have for any other season, BUT after learning from years past that one vote is simply not enough, I have been forced to register my choice repeatedly.

I think Blake is the better candidate but I know they'll both have mediocre careers when it's all over. cough...Rueben....cough...Fantasia..cough...cough...

My rundown of the night:

Song 1
Blake - I realize that some people really liked his version, but all I could think was that he simply wasn't talented enough to sing the song the way it was written, so of course he had to change it. He proved that yet again last night during the part he didn't screw up beyond recognition.
Jordin - I think it was a mistake for Jordin to pick an X-Tina song. It was an ok performance, but I don't think that's really how she should have attacked this night. She should have went hard after Melinda's voters, most of which probably have no idea that the song is called "Fighter". :teeth:
Winner: I wouldn't declare either of them the winner of Round 1. Wouldn't care to see either of those performances again.

Song 2
Blake - I can't stand the whiny emo sound, but that's right in Blake's wheelhouse. He doesn't have the voice to pull off most kinds of music, but he could do this.
Jordin - As good as it was, Randy is nuts if he thinks it was better than Martina's original. Still, it was a good way to contrast her voice with Blake's. If voters would do that, it wouldn't even be a contest.
Winner: Jordin, but only because she followed Blake's best vocal of the night with her usual delivery, easily showing who is the better singer between them.

Song 3
Blake - Wow, was that awful! You know the reason why he sounds so bad with back-up singers, particularly on this song? Because the back-up singers are singing harmony, and that only works if the lead - Blake - is actually on key occassionally. :rotfl: I was GLAD when the back-ups drowned him out. By FAR the worst performance of the night.
Jordin - Did about as much as she could with the typically craptastic finale song. And shame on you people for making fun of her for crying. :sad2: I'm sure if you were a kid and every dream you had was coming true, you wouldn't show any emotion at all, right? It's a shame that the 17 year old is acting more mature than much of the audience.
Winner: Jordin, for once again showing that there is no comparison between the two in terms of singing ability.

Overall
Blake - Didn't deserve his spot in the finals, as he can't sing anywhere near as well as Jordin or Melinda. Still, his dancing monkey routine seems to draw some people in, so I'm sure he'll do fine. But he was totally outclassed on that stage last night.
Jordin - She seems like a sweet kid, and she's got a voice that could very easily turn into a money making machine for Simon's label, as long as it's focused correctly (think Kelly's second album, not her first).
Winner: Jordin in a vote quite a bit closer than it should be.

Personally, I'm just glad this season is over. Too few real talents in the top 10 to make it interesting. Here's hoping that next year the judges do a better job of narrowing the field...before America screws it up for voting for the best hair over the best singers. :lmao:

Agreed.....

I woudl have LOVED to have seen Melinda vs Blake but...

I hope Blake wins. Jordin is just downright boring - I can't even stand watching her. She's right up there with Katherine McGee - YAWN.........

any one have info on tonights show? Who is peforming or anything?

I voted my fingers to the bone for Blake last night, but I have a feeling all I'll get out of it is bony fingers. It won't upset me if Jordin wins. My girl (and Simon's) was Melinda.

We actually didn't watch last night very much. In our house, we're more interested in tonight's results show when AI trots out all the contestants from this season and special guest stars. (But I *swear* if Britney Spears shows up I am leaving the room.)

agnes!
PS - Did you know that Jordin is only 17?

This has got to be one of the quietest threads after an Idol finale that we've ever had. I sure hope they pick better talent next year! Usually there are pages and pages of arguing. No one seems to really care one way or another this year.

That's true. While I want Jordin to win. it's no biggie if she doesn't. I was the same last year with Taylor and Katherine. I think the powers that be at Idol need to go back to the original format of the show. No more 6 guys, 6 girls. Just pick the good singers regardless of their sex. So if the top 12 are all male or all female, so be it.

DH and I were rooting for Melinda and Blake. Indeed if this were only a singing competition, she would be the winner. I don't like Jordin's voice. It has always been too screechy for me. IMHO there is nothing unique or distinctive about it. I won't be buying any Jordin music. I have already bought some of Blake's performances and I do look forward to future releases.

I totally agree, I think they should have just kept quiet... no need for them! They were just so LOUD...

The fault is with the Audio people, not the singers. For professionals, they've screwed up many times this year!
