American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Kathleen McPhee – Ouch…how the mighty have fallen. That was borderline painful and very forgettable. I think she’s at risk of going home this week.

Kinnik Sky – I think she was really smart by switching her image up. She showed America a whole other side of herself. I think she was entertaining and her vocal was ok.

Lisa Tucker – why does she have to pick such grown-up sounding songs? I think she was great vocally but I’d like to see her mix it up a bit.

Melissa McGhee – I really really love her voice! I’m not a fan of the Celine-style high-pitched female voice and Melissa’s voice is a wonderful change from that. I think she’s definitely a front-runner.

Heather Cox - Boring. I think she’s at risk of going home.

Brenna Gethers - She’s not singing, she’s just posing up there! And she needs more practice in front of the mirror because her stage presence looks weird. And she doesn’t have a neck. She’s the worst of the bunch by far – she really butchered that song.

Paris Bennett - Wow that was amazing! She gave me chills! I love her voice too. I don’t understand why Paula and Randy weren’t singing her praises?

Ayla Brown - I didn’t believe a single word she said about never wearing makeup and not knowing what foundation is. Nice vocal performance – I’m sure she’s sticking around for a few more weeks.

Kellie Pickler – It was a good performance and much better than last week.

Mandisa – I wish someone would tell her that big girls don’t have to wear tent dresses anymore. I loved loved loved her vocal performance!

My top picks: Mandisa and Melissa McGhee and Paris Bennett

Going home: Brenna Gethers and Heather Cox (only because Kathleen had a great performance last week)

CTV is showing AI followed by AR and running AR 1/2 hour later than NBC. I guess they'll keep doing that until AI runs for an hour.

The only decent singer for me tonight was Mandisa. I love her! Kellie (shudder) and Melissa were ok too.

Everyone else stunk the place up. Katharine, Heather, and Kinnik were the worst.

Overall, a very lackluster and boring night.

I'm agreeing that it is a very lackluster and boring show tonight. And I totally agree with Simon that Paula is like a juvenile. She reminds me of a 13-year-old girl always giggling and hitting him when he's trying to talk. Does she think America hates him so much they like that? Does she just want the camera always on her? He sits quietly while she talks, and sometimes she gushes over the worst singers, so why can't she sit quietly and let him talk? I usually record and fast-forward through most of their comments, but tonight I'm watching it real-time and it's driving me crazy!

We're committed to Brenna. Actually, some people (including me) are genuine Brenna fans. Not the greatest singer, but she cracks me up. I got a lot of Brenna votes in tonight, but I fully expect she'll be leaving (with Heather) on Thursday night.

I really liked Ayla's performance tonight....I believe she could have gone without makeup....being friends through school with a couple tom boys I know they could care less about make up....So I believe her....I liked Kellie and Mandissa too....Lisa and Paris were ok....the rest didnt do anything for me...looking forward to Taylor tomorrow night.....Oh and Amazing Race was great but did the Frosties get on anyone's nerves with all that screaming....

We liked Melissa, Ayla and Mandissa tonight. They were the best sounding to our family. Ayla is really fighting hard to prove she wants this contest you can tell. Melissa is starting to shine. And Mandissa has some pipes. Kelly , Paris and Katherine are also good.

Katherine I missed, just heard the little recap, so I'm reserving comments on her.

Kinnick...did nothing for me, bad, bad song choice

Lisa...nice job singing, not crazy about the song she picked though


Melissa...I liked her tonight, I think she is having a lot of fun. Good song choice for her.

Heather...Another song I like a lot but her performance of it doesn't even stand out in my mind, must have been bland and boring

Brenna...I repeat my earlier comment...yuck, yuck and yuck

Paris...had some good moments, had some bad moments. I was not crazy about her last week, I was not too impressed this week. I loved her audition, but I am just not getting into her now.

Ayla...she impressed me tonight, I thought she did a really nice job...and man is she tall!!!!

Kellie...good tonight, showed some emothion, got into the song. I'd like to see her sing some LeeAnn Womack, I think she has the perfect voice for her stuff.


Mandissa: Awesome performance...bad dress. I really like her alot.

Brenna was the only one that was a trainwreck but no one earned the Idol crown tonight. I would predict that Brenna and Heather are gone as well.

Well, it looks like I am in same agreement with others. Tonight was not that great. Though there were a few good moments, the girls really let America down tonight after their wonderful performances last week.

KATHARINE McPHEE

For some one who had such a strong first showing. I was surprised at how weak she came off this week. Though you could still tell she has talent, the song just didn't really show it off. I am hoping that she will survive to next week, but I am a little worried. Seeing how easy it was to get in my vote for her.

KINNIK SKY

I guess I am one of the few who liked her performance last week. But I will agree that she was not all that great this week. Though it was nice to see her show off another side of herself. But I think their are other songs out there that she could have sung that would have shown it off better. But she is another one that I hope will be able to survive and get another shot next week. But if she can't pull out all the stops then, then she needs to go home.

LISA TUCKER

Out of the top three performances, I think she was the strongest. And I also think she did better than Paris. But just like all the others, she should have picked a better song. But even though I had no troubles getting my vote in, I fell that she is safe for next week's show.

MELISSA McGHEE

She is still one of my favs. And I think she was one of the highlights of tonight's performances. She is one that I hope will make it to the top six girls. I would love to see her and Taylor sing a song together.

HEATHER COX

Though I remember her performance this week, unlike last week. I just was not that impressed with her. A really talented singer should make singing look effortless, but when I watch her it looks like she is struggling to get out every note. She is one that I would like to see go home Thursday.

BRENNA GETHERS

CAN SHE GO HOME NOW???!!! I'm all for believing in ones self. But when you don't have the talent to back it up, it gets tiresome. It is time for her to go. I just don't know what I will do if she makes it to the top six.

PARIS BENNETT

Though not as strong a showing as last week. I still enjoyed the performance. Even if she didn't look quite as relaxed as she did last week. But I am sure she will be back next week to try and make us all forget this weak performance. Or at least I hope so.

AYLA BROWN

Another one that I didn't remember from last week. But that is not something I can say this week. That is one of my favorite Celine songs, and she defentally did it justice. And its one that I would mind seeing on the AI5 group CD they put out every year. She is one that I hope will be able to survive and come back next week.

KELLIE PICKLER

This weeks performance was stronger than last weeks. But this girls still needs some work. I am kind of surprised at how weak her performances have been so far. She was one that I was expecting great things from and she has yet to deliver. But seeing how it was really hard to get in tonight to vote for her. I think she will be back next week, so that she can try to wow us again.

MANDISA

Just like last week. The strongest of the night. And just like last week, she made the song her own. And she was another one that I had a hard time getting in to vote for. I am really looking forward to her performance next week.

I agree that the girls were rather boring tonight!

The only 2 that I really enjoyed was Mandisa and Ayla! They both got my votes. I had a lot of trouble getting through for Mandisa but did manage to get a few in. I had absolutely no trouble voting for Ayla however and was able to get through every time! I would be worried except past seasons have taught me that just b/c I got through easily does not mean I should be worried just yet. I think she is still safe for another week at least.

I absolutely, positively hope that it is Brenna and Heather that go home this week. If not them then Katharine or Melissa.

At this point I think the top 6 girls should be (in no particular order) 1. Mandisa, 2. Ayla, 3. Paris 4. Lisa 5. Kinnik 6. Kellie (although I am really not a Kellie fan but I had to pick 6 so there you go!)

I suspect that Kinnik will be gone by next week though. I actually thought she was good last week. Not fond of her choice tonight but still like her better than Katharine and Melissa. I did enjoy Melissa last week but not this week. And Brenna and Heather should not last another week. They are both just awful!

Here's hoping to hear better things from the guys tonight...shouldn't be too hard considering how bad the girls were!

Some of my favorites in the beginning are slowly going to the bottom of the list...here's my opinions for the girl's performances:
Katharine: Even though I HATED her song choice tonight she is still one of my favorites and the most talented up there.
Kinnik: Last week she was ok, Simon had a point about the younger girls upstaging her. I thought she picked a reaaaaaly bad song tonight. She did not show off her voice at all. I could hear the backup singers better than I could hear her.
Lisa- Thought she was one of the top 3 performances tonight, though I would like to see her sing a little younger, she is a favorite of mine.
Melissa- Very suprised that I loved her performance. I think she may have been the best tonight.
Heather- NEVER SING MARIAH! NEVER!!!!
Brenna- This is not the Real World or Road Rules, she went to the wrong audition.
Paris- She was my absolute favorite after her first audition....now not so much. She is dressing and acting too old. And maybe its just me but one minute she has this soft voice and is oh so sweet, and when she gets one stage she makes these faces that almost make her seem arrogant. I hope I am wrong but something about her has been starting to bother me...either way she still has an awesome voice...though she needs to sing younger too.
Ayla- As sweet as she is she is forgetable. She has a nice voice but not good enough for me so far.
Kellie- Also one of my favorites in the beginning. She is adorable but her singing to me is becoming a bad version of Carrie Underwood. I hope she steps it up soon. Tonight was ok.
Mandisa- YAY! Love her! Not her best tonight overall but definitely one of the best of this group

My Top 3 tonight were Lisa, Melissa, and Mandisa
Oh I so hope Brenna and Heather go home. I do not think Kinnik will make it to the top 12 but at least her I could watch again.

I agree! Last night's show was terrible. I think the best two were Mandisa and Melissa. I'm looking forward to the guys singing tonight...hopefully better than the girls.

And honestly, what is Paula smoking? She is a nut job. Whenever it is her turn to critique I change the channel...poor Simon having to deal with that Nut Job!

So far of the girls the only ones that really stand out to me are Mandisa and Paris. The rest of them are good but haven't achieved that "grab your attention" level yet.

The guys, on the other hand, have a few that have done that -- Taylor, Ace, Chris, even Elliot.

I agree with Simon -- you can't help but like Kellie. Thing is, her southern twang comes through in her singing and sounds nasaly (sp?) at times, and that may hurt her down the road.

This week, me, too! I actually watched an Andy Griffith Marathon honoring Don Knotts (Barney). Much more entertaining. I never even switched the channels, except to catch portions of High School Musical.

I can't stand Brenna -- what an embarassment! She's even more obnoxious than the twins who were booted off for their felony charges. Oh sure, like she's what kids should look up to. Nope. I do have my favorites for both the girls and the guys, but still thought Don Knotts won my votes tonight!

I may watch the guys, and perhaps the elimination show. My joy will come when that idiot Brenna gets her hiney kicked off. Wheee!
