American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Wow, seems that there are a lot of people out there that aren't comfortable with self-assured people. Was Ayla going to win AI? Absolutely not, not even close. I figured she wouldn't make it to the final 10. But she can sing, just doesn't have that 'IT' factor. Has she ever been disappointed in life? According to a lot of you she hasn't. But, if you look at her objectively..she's a beautiful girl, is a terrific athlete, and a wonderful student. I don't think her parents were able to impact those grades or her athletic prowess or her looks. Please, cut the kid some slack. So she didn't have a great stage presence. Her mother, the anchor, and her dad, the politician, had nothing to do with voting. I voted for her, as did my dd's, because we liked her and she is from our area. I'm really glad she is going to be able to focus on school and basketball this spring/summer. I really believe that she has a much brighter future ahead of her than most of the other contestant. Which brings me to the final 12. I don't think they are even close to previous years talents. I don't particularly care about any of them. Some can only sing one genre...put them out of that comfort zone and they are going to be lost. I love Kevin's voice, just have to shut my eyes when I listen to him....guess he won't be going too far. Mandissa is wonderful....I think she is the best of the group. Chris is good, Elliot is good, Taylor is good, but I don't think any of them are going to shine. I guess I'm just an old poop.

However, I wish they would do a younger AI...put the teens with teens. These kids, like Lisa, just can't compete long term with the older voices. I would love to see two different shows. Maybe they could alternate them. Just a thought from the old poop!

I get the feeling that people didn't want Ayla to succeed because her parents were successful and that meant that she didn't deserve it. I certainly hope that nobody limits my children's successes because of what I was able to accomplish in my life. We should not be voting for the contestant because of their backgrounds.

I'm glad to hear that about her. She has been one of my favorites since the beginning. Some people are saying that she got so upset because she's never lost at anything in her life. Why is that a bad thing. People with high ambitions and the work ethic to follow through with them should always succeed. She could have been like those horrible criminal twins who expected to succeed just by whining and moaning.

I agree except for she wasn't one of my top choices but I was most definitely surprised to see her go last night. She's a TEEN-AGED GIRL and she's just been on the wildest ride of her life...I thought she held herself together extremely well and she got through that song which has to be the toughest thing she's ever had to do. Girls are emotional...just wait until Lisa and Paris go or even some of the older girls - I'll bet we see more tears. As for her success in life - good for her...mommy and daddy can't buy that for her and I've never had the feeling they tried to. I am VERY glad she's back on the college/b'ball track for now, though.

He said that? Did he sound bitter? Not hearing the interview but just reading what he said sounds mean and nasty-mind you not hearing the interivew it is hard to judge.

Scott Brown didn't sound nasty OR bitter when he spoke this morning on the radio. He said he was very proud of his daughter and that she showed tremendous strength and character last evening. Honestly he seemed relieved she would be back home soon and that she could get back to her HS for the last few months and enjoy being a senior and going to the prom, etc. He said september would be here before they all knew it and BC was right around the corner. Said everyone has missed her in the family and they looked forward to getting back to normalcy.

He wasn't bitter at all, he isn't that sort of man. He was very gracious, just like his daughter was last evening.

This whole hate Ayla thing because she comes from an upper middle class family is sort of ridiculous IMO. Some people are showing tremendous class envy on this board.

I think this is a really good top 12, although I would of kept Ayla and sent Melissa home and I would of kept Will and sent Kevin home.

Our house was disappointed that Will went home - we were rooting for him since he's a Texas boy.

Can't wait to see everyone on Tuesday after the stylists get a hold of them, should be very interesting.

I am not sure who everyone is referring to when they talk about people who aren't comfortable with self assured people...I have no issues...I am one of 'em!

I do think Ayla is pretty and I think basketball is her first love...if it wasn't then when asked in her initial audition what would happen if she went all the way she basically said I'll be in college on schedule no matter what happens with AI..so she knew what she wanted back then.
I think her Reflection song was wonderful. This week - didn't like it. As Simon said - song choice. But they always commented on how hard she worked...which I never took as a knock at her as some say but simply that she has to work at it to be good and is not a natural as say maybe Mandisa or Paris or whomever.

I'm sure she'll have a great life no matter what she does. I am not sure what rubbed me wrong about her...but I've learned to trust my instincts....Kelly kind of rubs me wrong as well - I can't put my finger on if its an act or not.... I think AI will impact all these contestants hopefully in a positive manner.

Not last night they did mention the stylist aspect of the final 12 - that one will be available...
wonder if they'll wash Bucky's hair and spruce up Kevin a bit?

Well, I agreed with exactly 50% of the people voted out last night. Both Gedeon and Kinnik deserved it, but Ayla and Will leave behind a field that is poorer for their absence. Of course, both had their flaws, too, but they were far better than Kevin and Melissa, who should have been the next to go.

Anyway, here is how I think it should go over the next 12 weeks:

12 - Melissa - She reminds me a bit of that cute blonde chick that was on AI a couple years ago that had a similar "husky" voice. Yeah, she couldn't sing either, and probably shouldn't have made the top 12.

11 - Kevin - The kid's got a decent voice, but he's in so far over his head that he just looks rather pathetic. And last time I checked, a "sex symbol" was someone that drew stares when they walked down the street. I think it's safe to say that is not something Kevin has had to worry about to this point in his life.

10 - Kelly - Based solely on her performances since voting started, I just don't think she deserves to be any higher than this. I don't buy the cynical...uh (familyboardfamilyboard)..."stuff" about her being a "fake", as I know people just like her.

9 - Elliott - Sorry, but I just can't stand the little Amish guy. He should kill on Stevie next week, since that's all I think he could actually sing. Still, I can't stand listening to him.

8 - Ace - And you can drop him a few spots if he doesn't get rid of that ridiculous falsetto. He can definitely sing, as he showed in the early auditions and the first week when he sang "Father Figure".

7 - Paris - Phenomenal potential, but she hasn't reached it since her very first, acapella audition when she was singing Billy Holiday. Since voting started, she's been nothing more than a slightly more talented Fantasia.

6 - Mandisa - Has given a couple stellar performances, but I just think that she is very limited in what she can do. I think my biggest problem with her is that I would never buy something she put out. It's just not my favorite genre of music, by quite a ways.

5 - Lisa - She could actually move up the list if she would improve her song selection a bit. Probably the best female voice in the competition, but she needs to stretch herself a bit and get out of her comfort zone.

4 - Bucky - I would have put him at about 11th before the last two weeks, but he's been increasingly impressive in both performances. I could absolutely see flipping on the radio to a country station and hearing him.

3 - Chris - Has been incredible a couple times, but the performance of "Broken" moved him down a slot on my board. Plus, I really see him having a bit of trouble in weeks like next week, when the theme is "Let's sing as many lame 30 year old songs as possible".

2 - Kathryn - Can't put my finger on what it is, but she has raced to the front as my favorite female left in the competition. She's got a wonderful voice, good stage presence when she's singing, and a very good personality. She is pretty much the whole package.

3 - Taylor - He may be a "spaz", but he is just so much fun to watch and listen to. I would love to hear him do more acapella. Something with a ton of soul in it that he could just close his eyes and wail. His will likely be the first "American Idol" album that I will actually purchase for myself (bought Bo's but that was as a gift :teeth: ).

I'm sure it won't finish this way, but that's how I'm voting and what I'm rooting for.

I guess I've read the posts differently. I don't think anyone said they hate her...and if someone doesn't like Bucky or Kelly or Paris or Mandisa how does that play into your class envy theory?

I can only speak for myself while I think she has a good voice I didn't care for her...but it has nothing to do with class envy. I found it interesting that they always seemed to throw the "father" and "mother" 's jobs in there more so that the other contestants. So who cares what her parents do...other than Kelly's parents do we know what any of the other contestants parents do for a living? Or did I miss that part of the show?

and Kevin - isn't he under 18? Paula should not be saying he's a sex symbol...I mean who is he a sex symbol for? What's she promoting here?

The last two weeks, it seemed to me that Kellie has been singling out Chris for hugging. And, I noticed that he was nice about it, but didn't seem to initiate any of the hugs. I deleted my episodes, but I'd love to go back and look again. Last night, she had her arm around his neck at the end and to me, he looked uncomfortable. Think our country girl may not be as innocent as she acts?

I noticed that for the first time last night. I even made a comment to my DD about her putting her arm around his neck.

I don't remember them mentioning her parents more than once or twice, but I honestly don't have the entire series committed to memory so I might be wrong. I know someone (I think Katharine, herself) said that Katharine's mom is a voice coach and isn't Paris' mom in entertainment, or is it just her grandmother?

Am I the only one that does NOT like Kevin's voice???? If that came out of the radio the dial would change in a split second. I was disappointed he made it through.

I was OK with Will going. He was not ready for this type of competition.

I was shocked that Ayla and Gedeon went home. Thought they both should have been in the top 12.

I think he's terrible, but I think it's funny he made the top 12.

I was very sad to see Ayla go home. I think that she should have stayed over Melissa. But Melissa picked a good song this past week, and Ayla did not. I'm not crazy about Melissa's husky voice. She doesn't have much range at all. Now Ayla has a very good voice, and should have shown it off better. I think that it's unfair to judge Ayla because of her family. She was one of the hardest working girls on the show.

I wasn't surprised about Kinik and Will going home. But I was surprised about Gideon. I personally don't like the guy at all. He was way too arrogant! :( But he had a much better voice than Kevin (in a different way). Kevin is just too green. He does have a good voice, but he is not American Idol material. I think that either Kevin or Bucky will go home next week. And either Melissa or Paris will probably go home.

I was getting so nervous with the way that Ryan was doing the elimination process. I almost had a heart attack when he got to Katharine and Elliott. I would have really been screaming if either of them had not made it to the top twelve.

Wasn't it you that said, " And she looked and sounded so shocked.....buh bye! Didn't anchor mom or big shot dad sway the vote enough? " Probably not hate but it sure wasn't fair.

Here are some others:
They are so used to getting whatever they want and now that they didn't they are coming up with excuses

also the basketball player, wonder how much her father played in this

Ayla Brown annoys me. Her mom is a tv reporter in MA and her dad is a in state gov't. It really made me nuts when she was trying to tell about the adversity she has faced in her life....she wanted to play boys foot ball and it was hard!! Jeesh look at the stories the rest of them had and put the silver spoon back in your mouth Ayla and be quiet

Little snot....

Youre reading my mind.

I'm glad he didn't sound sour. B/c his daughter seems like she has her act together. I will miss her in the competition. There were a few others that should have gotten the boot. Just think if she gets involved with musical theater in college. The parts she will get will be amamzing! Plus a good profit for the theater dept!!!

Her mom isn't an anchor and her dad is no big shot. Her mother is a TV reporter who hardly ever appears on camera anymore and her dad is State Rep for a middle class Boston suburb. She's not a spoiled kid with a silver spoon in her mouth. There's no way she should be gone at this point.

Maybe I missed it but who is saying anything about her upper middle class background? Heck I come from the same background and I just thought she sang bad. LOL!

I personally thought Alya sounded great. I liked her from the start. She has a very good voice. I was very disappointed to see her leave. I think I voted for her ten times. I learned from the Dancing with the Star's show it really has nothing to do with talent. That is why I can't get overly involved in these shows. Good singers get let go because of someone the public feels sorry for.
