American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

One other comment - I can't believe that Simon recanted in such a huge way. Although we all know that Whitney was huge in her day, I think most people have lost so much respect for her that it doesn't hurt a contestant to sing one of her songs as long as the song isn't butchered. (which it wasn't) Katharine did not try to sound like Whitney at all.

No matter what she is now she sang that song like a champ and Kat couldn't do the same justice as Whitney did by any stretch of the imagination, and I love Kat and cannot stand the sight of WH.

Elvis went the same road as many other drug addicted superstars, and for some reason he's a King. Next week should be interesting.

I think the criticism AND the apology was contrived. I thought she sounded great at first then when I watched it over and over again I saw the flaws. Simon apologizing??? That was BS. This show is becoming more and more unbelievable and more like a sitcom than a reality show.

ITA very nice interview. All the Kellie haters should read this. It may change your mind.....

Hate is a strong word. Don't hate her, don't like her much either, article didn't change my mind.

Thanks for the link damo. That is a great interview. I think Kellie is as adorable on the inside as she is on the outside. I saw a picture of her father Bo, she looks just like him. I hope he can turn his life around.

BARBARAAPPLE- I live about 10 minutes north of you!

It didn't change my mind either. I am wondering WHY she put on such a stupid act when now she sounds so normal. Its really a shame she felt she had to do that. :confused3

I watched AIE tonight on the TV guide channel and I felt that Kellie was much more down to earth than she was on AI. She didn't come across as a dingy blonde. Even her accent was toned down a tad. She's no rocket scientist by any means, but I do feel that she was putting on a bit of an act on the show.

I hope that Paris goes next. Then I can't decide who I want to actually win. Chris, Taylor, and Kat are all great. I do feel that Kat would thrive the most on the AI circuit though. I'd rather see Chris go onto do something in his genre. Same thing for Taylor.

I don't get it why they would want to lose??????? :confused3 It hasn't done anything for any of them except Clay. Even Justin fizzled fast. So out of all the idols in 4 season's only 1 person has done anything-- that hasn't won the "title". I am not being sarcastic... this is the first season I have watch from the begining so I am curious. ;)

That's not true. Josh Gracin has had quite a successful country music career so far.

::yes:: I agree with you. Taylor has looked very uptight and uncomfortable lately. I don't think Chris has always got the credit he deserves for showing different sides.

My take on Taylor is he looks like he is trying so hard NOT to just let go when singing (the stuff that makes a lot of us like him) because some judge comments on his movements when he does. He looks like he just wants to go off in his own little "happy dance I love to sing" world and he is holding it in lately.

Exactly. Bo sold a lot too even though the style was wrong. The rest was edited because I misread the comment. :)

I agree totally. but if you look back at some of the posts, "hate" has been used quite a bit-and not just about Kelly. Kelly was not my favorite-I think she is cute but she didn't have the voice to be an American Idol. But what impressed me most about this article she seems to genuinly care about her fellow contestants. Like this quote...

You've had some interesting moments on air, not knowing what a minx or calamari is and mispronouncing salmon. Some people think you were just putting on a dumb blonde act. Were you?
To be honest, that kind of hurt my feelings. I don't think people realize I went from a small town in North Carolina to Los Angeles, so of course there are going to be things I don't know. It did hurt my feelings. But hey, you know, when they're talking about me, they're giving someone else a break.

I think she is a classy young lady.

I love her and will miss her greatly....never thought she was a good enough singer to win....but I liked her better than elliott and Paris vocally....but Mandissa was better than all 3 and Paris and should still be in the competition....thats why I think the voting system is a bit unfair....I also think that with one exception the right person has won...that was the year Fantasia won....so maybe its not totally wrong

I think Kat gave that song her jazzy spin. While it couldn't compare to the original, I don't think it was horrible. However, I am just as surprised as you are that they made a huge deal over the apology. I think we can all agree that the judges have this phenomenal ability to speak out of both sides of their mouths!

I totally agree. He is not the same Taylor he was when he started. I can literally SEE him holding back at times and it appears to be such a struggle for him. I feel bad for him. I love him JUST THE WAY HE IS as a performer and I hope he thumbs his noses at the judges and will just be himself next week. On that note...I am so tired of the judges saying "be true to yourself" one week and then the next week saying "that was boring...you need to show some versatility". WHY? How many successful pop stars do you know that show versatility? They all sing the kind of music that they sell. IMO all of Beyonce's songs sound alike and they SELL, SELL, SELL. I could say the same about a lot of singers.

I'm new to this thread, but I love reading all your reviews. I really like all of the remaining Idols. My fav is Chris, at least this week. I change up all the time.

After watching the last few idols, I got to ask, does anyone else think Paula is on drugs?

Your opinion may not be the popular one and so the voting system may not at all be unfair.

It seems that everyone thinks that if they don't like a contestant, then no one should. I would put Elliott in the top three of this contest easily. I actually think the voting has been excellent this year.

That's a great point! I do try to always look at everything (not just AI! but everything in life) from two perspectives: From my own perspective and from the perspective of reality. I often find that my own perspective, while surely valid and defensible, doesn't really hold much weight IRL. I think the world would be a better place if everyone always considered things from both perspectives. We'd have a lot less fighting and a lot more understanding.

Wow, I said the same thing to my sister just last night. I am really counting on this getting down to a Kat-Chris-Taylor finale. While Kat's my least fav of the 3, I think she would benefit the most from an AI win. Taylor was fine without AI, Chris is going to have rock bands fighting over him either way. But I don't see Kat being real successful without a win here. WITH a win, she could rival Kelly Clarkson, IMO.

I think Andrea Bocelli fell in love with Kat!!! Maybe without a win, we'd see a partnership in that direction.
