American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Slacking, isn't VFTW playing right into Simon's hands though? I don't understand it but he seems to be pushing Kellie for some reason.

I resent the implication that Bucky was the worst though! I can think of a few others both past and present that seem like better candidates to me.

In the end though, they won't want Kellie to win. Nothing could be worse for business than having a cute, blonde country singer competing against...... a cute blonde country singer.

I don't think they will want two similar-type of winners in a row.

I have to believe it's all just an act. I cannot fathom that anyone in this country with more than a 6th grade education would be that ignorant.

You havent met my sister in law yet....I live in SC and I have to say I see people day in and day out that are just like Kellie....Mostly girls in HS or just out of HS early 20's. I say its not an act. I think she is genuine. Lets remember too that she has not had a female role model in her life....just a young girl trying to get the love of her grandpa and maybe this is the way she gained that love....I am sure she didnt want to lose him in her life also....so if it worked for her why knock....we all play our strengths in life...there are plenty of women supervisors here at my job that are just as ditzy and only got that position by flaunting certain aspects and there are some genuine women here that earned there positions by there knowledge only either way there attributes got them to a certain point in life....I think its funny yall quote my favorite actress Mrs Witherspoon but look at her most popular movie roles...Legally Blonde where she plays a ditzy blonde....I have alot of respect for Kellie, for her looks, her life and the ambition after whats happened to her to even try for American Idol....Do I think she has the best voice by no means no.....but she has made America love her and she is talented so more power to her.....Good luck Kellie

True. I guess that they really want Chris then.

It's all so convoluted though. I can see Chris doing well if someone picks the right music for him. However, he is no Bo Bice whose career is off to a horrible start thanks to AI.

I kind of hope that Taylor blows them out of the water. ;)

I have to agree with that....but top 3 is likely....I think Taylor or Chris will be a marketing marvel for them....They will have no problems with either....I love Kellie but she is not the best singer...Taylor and Chris have always been my top 2....But Chris is slipping lately he is getting boring to me....Taylor is just fun....Katherine is the darkhorse in my eyes....looks and voice I wont be dissappointed tosee her win it

Well I didn't think Bucky would make it but thought he could make it past Ace, Elliot. I vote alot. I don't have anyone left to vote for. They say that when one goes home you just give those votes to someone else but not me. I don't even have to have it taped me to watch if we will be gone now. I won't be the same with him gone. :guilty: :guilty: :guilty:

Glad to see Bucky go, nice looking but not one of the best singers.
Elliot may not be the best looking but my gosh can that boy sing!! What a voice!
Ace...keep him around a bit longer--nice eye candy!
I like Taylor...he has so much charisma and makes me smile when he comes on though not overly crazy about his voice!
Anyone else wonder about Kellie--she can sing though---could she really be as clueless as she is on the show or is it a big show "Now I got the snot rag!"
As for the rest I haven't paid that close of attention

Reality TV stars are a dime a dozen these days, and although these reality stars have a talent, it's not usually an AMAZING talent or they would've won the show.
In the case of American Idol, though, they're not just reality television stars -- they're performers who are offered a serial audition seen by tens of millions. There is no better way for these people, who have been unable to break into the industry through application of their own resource, to achieve their dream of becoming a recording artist.

Remember, folks, these performers signed contracts to appear on-air and in commercials, in return for what they were offered. One of them even decided not to continue because the compensation wasn't enough for him, remember? The rest did. They're being compensated as well as they themselves expect to be, so why would you second-guess their decision?

If Kellie's "strength" to play is to be the ditzy blonde, then I feel sorry for her.

Elle in the Legally Blonde movies was a fictional character. Reese Witherspoon was talking about the tendency of some women like Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson playing that up in real life. There's a huge difference.

I don't know of Kellie is actually that naive or clueless, or if it's partially an act. Either way, if she has to rely on that to gain sympathy votes to stay in the competition, then she's lost my respect. She has the "rags to riches" story that America loves. If she has the talent, then that should speak for itself.

My poor five year old daughter is heartbroken that Bucky is gone. She just loved him. He does seem like a genuinely nice person...but I just didn't think he was that great of a singer or performer.

I don't think Ace is as bad as some people here think he is. I just get a bit weary of him acting so pitiful all the time. He always looks like he's about to hurl. I don't know if he'll ever make it as a "singer" but with his looks, I'm sure we will see him on tv somewhere. Wonder if he can act?

To me Paris hasn't sounded good since her audition. She always seems to be singing too low (as in too low of a key). Where is that beautiful voice we heard when she sang the Billie Holiday song at her audition? I don't care for her.

Chris I can take or leave depending on the song. This week I could definitely leave.

Katherine...another one who seems to have "lost" her voice. That song sounded so forced the other night.

Elliot sounded really good last night...much better than Tuesday night I though. He's growing on me and I just might have to start voting for him instead of Katherine.

Kellie...she can sing, but I think girls like her are a dime a dozen right now. There are lots of pretty blongs who can sing. She needs to do something that makes her stand out and I haven't seen it yet.

Taylor...MY MAN! I love him. He makes me smile. I hope he wins. Simon told him that Paula and Randy would never even put him through to the final 12. He sure has shown him!! :cool1:

There is one thing that I have found interesting about the celebrity guests. In their interviews, they have all said that they really like or LOVE Kellie. I think she is the real deal.

I was also sad that Bucky left. I think it was his time but I also felt he was a very nice person. At least he will get to tour. Ace should be the one to go next week. Every week I think it will be him but he seems to get saved. In the end I think it will be between Taylor and Chris. My hope is that Chris wins.

From http://www.brianmay.com/whatsnew.html: (from Queen)

OK ... it begins ....the fallout from American Idol.

There is so much to say - I sure have learned a lot myself already from this experience ... but slowly will do it ... one thing at a time ...

Firstly let me comment on ACE. He's a great guy.

Some of you have written in accusing me of undermining ACE with his interpretation of WWRY. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm afraid this is an illustration of exactly what I have been quoted as saying about the programme ..... that the critical process would be better off done in private, like we do in auditioning for our musical ... .

We had an interaction with ACE, a conversation, in which we gave him the best advice we possibly could, based on studying the demo's which we already had in our iTunes - which I'd personally given a lot of time to study. This conversation, in my book, ought to have been private, but that is not the style of the show, sadly. But the even more unfortunate thing is that you are then in the hands of the video editors, who seem to seize with glee anything that looks negative. It was edited in such a way that it looked as if I was purely negative - they very naughtily inserted a bit that I said about "not on my own song" so it appeared that I said it AFTER we had played together, which was not the way it happened ...making me look like I was against the whole thing. But this was not the case. Having said that I wouldn't be able to play the arrangement exactly like his demo, and that I didn't think it would work without the stomps and claps which are foundation of the song, we then discussed how we could improve his ideas and with a mixture of a quick conference and spontaneous creation we came up with a kind of mixture of his thoughts and ours - WHICH WAS THE BASIS FOR THE ARRANGEMENT THAT YOU SAW THE HOUSE BAND PLAY ON THE NIGHT ! It was actually pretty damn good, I thought, for a quick attempt ... and he sang it very well live. If you talk to ACE he will confirm that we parted on the very best terms, and he thanked me for the input. I made it very clear that I respected him for taking chances and trying to make the song his own. The version you saw on TV used a straight sample beat with stomps and claps which set up the song in the first verse in the classic way, and then a working in of an underpinning riff (close to what I had done in our rehearsal period together, in response to Ace's idea) and then back to a straighter 3rd verse, but ending in his delayed phrase end stop, again, just as we did it together .... and I thought it was damn good.

Just in case any of this isn't clear .... the version of WWRY that ACE performed on AI last night was a DIRECT RESULT of his own ingenuity and the advice we gave him, with our full encouragement and blessing. And he definitely rocked. And we wish him much luck in the contest.

If you watch the programme again you will notice that ACE said he enjoyed working with us, and that I also said quite clearly that I thought an approach of personalising songs was a necessary ingredient of greatness ... my exact words were ... "He's a very interactive person, and that's what makes Greatness". I hope that wherever ACE is right now he remembers that there is mutual respect there between us, and much good feeling. And to all you guys out there who have become his fans ... please remember this too ...

As for the rest .....well, a little later ..

But I was impressed with all our new friends, the Idols - wonderful job, guys, THANKS ! .. and we feel really complimented.

I suspect Ace always looks like he's going to hurl because he's always ready to hurl. I'm a singer and I feel like that all the time when I'm about to perform (Weddings and Funerals). I'm 42 and have never gotten over it. Some people don't. He can work through it though and that's wonderful because not everyone can. Barbara Steisand comes to mind.

Hope this isn't off-topic, but Bo Bice's video of "The Real Thing" is #1 this week on VH1's weekly Top 20 countdown and his album is on track to go platinum in spite of the fact that he still has 2 or 3 singles which are not released yet so I don't think he's doing too badly! He had a great performance on MTV recently, too.

It's hard for me to envision any of the current candidates having a mega successful recording career. Taylor is a great entertainer and I can see him doing great in Vegas, but I don't see him as a big seller, album wise. Chris can do well with a band, but not as a solo artist. The rest may sell small amounts to a "niche" audience a la George Huff, but I dont think they can match the success of Carrie or Bo.

Last year really spoiled me. I just don't see a big star this year (but I still watch!). :)

I liked when Ryan reiterated the comments made by the judges about Ace, (they were pretty bad) and then Ace said "Thank you guys". I don't think he deserves to win the whole thing but I don't think he's as lousy as people think. I really hope Chris wins it, I think Taylor is fun, but Kellie is too much of a Carrie Underwood wantabee. I think Catherine belongs on the Miss America stage. JMHO ;)

Did anyone happen to notice that in the video clips with Kellies Grandgather he hardly had any accent? Maybe he is not from the south or not from that area. My girls pointed that out they thought it was weird that Kellies is so thick, but he had almost none.

I also thought Kellie was kinda cute tonight. She looks so much better without all that makeup on and her little bit with the tissue and then Ryan throwing it at Elliot was kinda funny.

I definitely noticed this and was going to post it but you beat me to it. A child grows up speaking in the dialect they are raised in. Her grandparenrts have raised her. Now anyone who lives in the south knows, a southern accent does not sound as bad as Kellie is portraying hers to be. And everytime the camera is on her when they are interacting with her, she opens her mouth in the most ignorant way, so that you could picture cousin gomer teeth in her mouth instead of the gorgeous white ones she has. It is just TOO much!

I'm guessing there must be a big segment of the voting Idol population who is vastly underrepresented here on the DIS.

Uhh heck YES!!! The demographics on this board doesn't reflect anyone in my world, that's why I'm always interested in the way it thinks. If I only listened to my world I'd be lopsided!

I was SHOCKED that Bucky was let go... I mean truly shocked. Not saddened but SHOCKED! I thought it was my Ace's turn.

Born and raised in the south here - yes, there are some people who really do have this thick of an accent. Hopefully - not me. :teeth: But I have a cousin who sounds just like this!!

My 4 yr old has a friend with a VERY THICK southern accent - no one else in the family does.

A 4 yr old isn't faking it, and I know my cousin isn't as she as spoke this way all of her life - she's now 42. So, there really are people who do speak this way. Personally, I like Kellie and hope she does well.
