American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

There was an article in our local paper about Chris. His wife, Deanna, said that she had to get a second job since they are without Chris's income. :guilty: She also said that AI doesn't pay for families of contestants to come to the show. Locals in McLeansville have been raising money for the Daughtry family.

Another Kellie fan here! :cheer2:

Katharine is my all time favorite. My DH says it's only because she looks like our daughter. :p

I can understand maybe not being paid to be on the show, since the exposure an artist will get can be priceless. What I want to know is how advertisers like Ford (I think it's Ford anyway) that feature all the contestants in their commercial each week can get away with not paying them?

Does the show at least pay for the contestants expenses like food, hotel and transportation around town?

A lot of times it sounds like that the soundman does not quite have the "mix" right for the tv broadcast. The singers voice gets lost in the band.

Thanks to ChrisnSteph I now know I'm not crazy (or completely crazy)...was watching the show several weeks ago, and when they had the end of show playback, noticed that one of the singers finished up their song differently (I think they looked in a different direction)...I told my wife, that's not the same performance we just saw "live"...

Yes, AI pays for those things. I don't know if he receives a stipend. It may not be the amount she needs to make ends meet. She is a massage therapist and Chris was a Service Rep. for Crown Honda.

The contestants seem to be in a no win situation. They are told that they need to make a song there own, but when someone changes things up (like Ace attempted) they are put down. Yet when they don't change anything they are told they are too karaoke.

ITA.

How do most of you vote? Dh asked me if I voted based solely on that night's performance or if I voted based on how they've done over the course of the show. Just curious.

I vote based on that night alone. I think I have given each of them at least one vote at some point.

When it was the top 24 I voted for several people - whomever performances that I thought were the best of the night then as it got down to the top 12 I picked my favorite and vote for them for the entire two hours until I can't vote no more.

The only singer who really helped the AI'ers was Barry Manilow. The rest were only self-promoting.

I remember that Elton John - before he pulled that stunt - also tried to really help them. I doubt we'll ever see him again on Idol.

Completely agree with your Barry Manilow comment. :thumbsup2

Regarding Elton John - what stunt? :confused3

Rest assured that advertisers pay American Idol's producers BIG TIME for those advertisements.

When I vote, I vote for who I like the best overall, not solely based on one night. To me it's more important to have consistancy rather than one outstanding performance and the rest mediocre or less than that.

I've read that Barbara Streisand won't have a nose job because it would change the tone of her voice. Is it possible the placement of your teeth affects voice as well? I've noticed a lot of singers with bad teeth so maybe that's one reason :confused3 , though I can't say I noticed it with Freddie Mercury.

I'm not sure about singers but teeth placement affects musical intsrument playing ability.

My son plays the oboe which uses a very tall and narrow reed t play the woodwind instrument. The placement of the reed is a precise thing where teeth, tongue and breathing have to be done in a correct way or two things will happen

1 Reeds will break in your mouth
2 You can't breath and play at the same time.

Orthodontia will affect his playing. It will realign the teeth and the metal will change the tone of the instrument.

OK, I don't know what to say at this point. And I am gonna get SLAMMED here and I know it. But you ladies constant slamming of Kellie makes me wonder if a few of you aren't just a little jealous.

She is the sexy minx that drew the eyes of all the boys in HS. She also has the accent that so many northern boys would find totally attactive. She has "some" talent, though not as much as some of the others, yet more than some that are still there.

She isn't like some of the "bad guys" AI has had in the past like Scott Savol, Mikayla, and the black girl who was dropped at around 11 or 12 this season... the one with the nasty attitude.

I don't get the whole overt hatred of her. She is what she is. And what she is just seems to get under many of you ladies' skin. I don't get it, though.

Not jealous, actaully feeling a little defensive and sorry for her thinking the producers through Ryan's questions have tried (intentionally and successfully) to perpetuate and exagerate her naivete, but after last night's "on paper?", I'm not so sure, LOL.

I live in the south, grew up in the north, and I know people like her, men and women, and I've come to learn that having an accent and being naive does not equal stupid.

Check out this good looking guy! Guess who?!

Yeah, but do they pay the contestants for appearing in their commercials?

American Idol's producers compensate the contestants very generously, by giving them exposure to tens of millions of people every week. They give them an incredible shot at their dream.

Here's my update!

I didn't get into the taped performances, but I did get to see the dress rehearsal. For those in the L.A. area, if you don't have tickets but want to try and get in, there is a stand-by line. There are tons of people though, so get there early if you want a shot at getting in. There are alot of people who have tickets and don't show up, so they do take people from the line to fill the seats. I didn't get any pictures because you weren't allowed to bring cell phones or cameras into the studio.

We saw everything during the rehearsal that is seen during the taped show, minus the judges. Ryan Seacrest was also there and is very friendly. He was interacting a lot with the audience. He looks so short in person! There is also a lot of sound checking and adjustment with the lighting going on. Katherine had to sing her song twice because of some sound issues. She sounded more strained on the second take, and that is what you saw during the song recaps they do at the end of the show. I think she sounded better when I watched it on t.v. then during rehearsal. Ace also sounded better in person. He looked like he tried so hard up there on that stage, and seemed pretty confident. Really, the band drowns so many of the singers out. Taylor was just so much fun to see in person! Talk about entertaining! You just couldn't sit in your seat - and he did nail the microphone kick in rehearsal! That guy is made for the stage and for singing. Another one that I felt was too drowned out by the band. Then there's Bucky - ! He looked so hot yesterday - in a cute/bad boy kind of way! He loves his fans and likes to interact with the audience, but you don't see that during the show. I can tell you that there were a LOT of Bucky fans in the audience! I also think he sounds better in person than on tv. And yes you could understand EVERY word he was singing! Chris sounded awesome, but the lights were very distracting and made it hard to actually watch him on stage. I think they toned it down a bit for the show, but even watching on tv it was obnoxious. He sings very loud and though my dh like his performance alot, I thought it sounded like he was yelling too much into the microphone. I kept looking at Chris, going "ouch"! Loved the heavy eyeliner though. He is super hot, that's all I got to say! He also had a lot of fans in the audience! Kellie looked very scary on stage. The whole thing was very odd, but I think she sounded better on tv than she did during the rehearsal. She also came across very confident and not nearly as ditzy as she seems on tv. She didn't have as many fans in the audience as you would think, seeing how popular she is. Paris sounded awesome. Her voice really rose above the bands, and so did Elliott. It didn't really come across that way on tv though. Her whole look was just wrong in every way though! She seemed a little stiff on stage. It was a fun time, but I didn't get to meet any of the performers. They gave autographs and signed shirts here and there, but there were so many people that I didn't even try. Maybe next time!

I'm glad that you had fun. I went to an Idol concert last summer, and you are right....they are so different when you can see them live.

I like Bucky too. He just seems so cute to me.

There was just an article in the local paper about how the contestants families have to raise their own money to go view the show, which is fine imo.

As bicker said, the exposure alone is worth a lot of money in the long run. It's not paying the bills now but a saavy contestant can make money from it in the future.
