American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I didn't see the performances last night because I worked late. At 7:59, I started voting blindly! I voted from 1-8 then 8-1, not knowing which order everybody sang. I got in for EVERYBODY and I thought, NOT GOOD! Numbers 6, 7, and 5 were busy. Sometimes 8. When I got home, I watched the show and it was interesting.

I liked Bucky's performance. Good song choice.

I thought Ace did a very good job with the song. I thought Queen could have let up a little bit, good grief!

Kellie. Personally, I didn't care for it. Stop playing the nut roll.

Katherine. Didn't care for it. Boring. Her best night was Stevie Wonder night IMO.

Chris. It was ok. Had a headache from the screaming and my eyes hurt from all the flashing but, that's Queen.

Elliot. I loved Elliot's performance. He's my favorite and has been consistant. I have EVERY song he sang so far downloaded on my computer and it sounds like it could be a preview of his CD!
Now, Queen wanted Aretha Franklin to sing Somebody to Love! So why couldn't Elliot? When I finally got a chance to vote, the line was busy.

Taylor. A bit flibbertyjibbet for me, but entertaining. I was getting dizzy looking for him on the screen. Sang it pretty well.

Paris. Didn't like the look at all, song too morbid. She could go home.

Saw something posted that Rod Stewart could be next week's theme! Shoot me now why don't you.....

A good theme would have been Chicago, Prince, maybe even the Eagles. Anybody but Queen or Rod Stewart. (Although I did buy Another One Bites the Dust from ITUNES yesterday)

Ace, Ace, Ace - you can't ask Brian May to rearrange his own song, a classic song at that - that's a BIG NO, NO!!!

I think Bucky has a much nicer voice than Ace does and if dialidol is right again this week, Ace is going home tonight.

:offtopic: but I LOVE that you used that word!! Now I have the song stuck in my head! "How do you solve a problem like Maria...." :rolleyes1

First off, you guys are CRAZY! Chris was incredible. His song wasn't a "well-known" Queen song which is why nobody liked the song choice. Would we all have liked to hear him sing the melodically challenged/boring-torch-song "We Are The Champions"? SURE! This was an outstanding performance and should, quite frankly, be one of the first singles he releases. Say what you will....he's the best one in the competition, IMHO of course.

OK, Chris is my favorite, but he screwed up in a MAJOR WAY last night ( if he wants to win) . People vote not just for the performer, but also the performance. AI is mainstream Amercia. People like stuff that they are familiar with. I think he could have chosen one of MANY ( but NOT WWRY or We Are the Champions ) great Queen songs that people know. How about "I'm in Love with My Car"? Simon was DEAD ON CORRECT..... Last night was Chris' night to blow everybody else's doors in, and he chose not to.

Anyway, it is all irrelevant, IMO. I don't think Chris WANTS to win AI. He's getting a deal with somebody, somewhere, and won't be locked in by a dumb AI "forced down his throat" CD. He's PERFECT for the genre he wants to do.

I think Chris can afford to laugh off anybody's suggestions.... he's gonna be just fine. :thumbsup2

This is a great idea! ::yes:: i guess they would need to have a new album or tour to promote though. but wow, what a great songbook to choose from that would be. i would love to see taylor do 'does anybody really know what time it is' or elliott do '25 or 6 to 4'

OK, I don't know what to say at this point. And I am gonna get SLAMMED here and I know it. But you ladies constant slamming of Kellie makes me wonder if a few of you aren't just a little jealous.

She is the sexy minx that drew the eyes of all the boys in HS. She also has the accent that so many northern boys would find totally attactive. She has "some" talent, though not as much as some of the others, yet more than some that are still there.

She isn't like some of the "bad guys" AI has had in the past like Scott Savol, Mikayla, and the black girl who was dropped at around 11 or 12 this season... the one with the nasty attitude.

I don't get the whole overt hatred of her. She is what she is. And what she is just seems to get under many of you ladies' skin. I don't get it, though.

I don't really have a problem with her, but I can see where people could find her idiocy to be not that attractive. I also think it is silly that everytime a woman doesn't like another woman it is because they are jealous.

I AGREE....but how come the "most" of the ladies here are almost 100% in agreement of slamming Kellie every single week?

I'm sure you probably have a point on some levels, but I know the thing that REALLY bothers me about Kellie is that she's perpetrating the idea that being an airhead and flighty is how you gain popularity and get votes. Look at the culture of Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, etc. Now Kellie with HUGE popularity because of her airhead comments. I don't care if they're her just being her or an act - what bothers me is that she does it every single week. I don't like that message that's being sent to girls. I wish it wasn't so rare to see a well spoken, intelligent young woman having a great amount of popularity.

Valid question. My wife likes Ace a lot. I just think Ace is a bad singer. Also, I don't think he is attractive ( as much as one guy can tell what is "attractive" about another man ). I know lots of you women think he IS ATTRACTIVE.

If I thought he had talent, I would be fine with him. I don't think he has much talent.

If you read my posts over this season, I haven't "slammed" anybody. Why? Because nobody is unlikeable in this group to me, on a personal level. They all seem like nice folks. No Bad Guys! So I just put my feelings out about their talent(s).

Last year when all the women were swooning over Bo, guess what?... Bo was my FAVORITE!

or she could show little personality like Katherine. Why would that be better for her? I want to like Katherine, but there is nothing about her personality jumping out at me.

I'm not in the 100% of woman on hear bashing Kellie. I like her for who she is. Do I think she'll win, probably not, but I have no problems with her, and she can't help her southern drawl, what is she supposed to do with a Queen song. She can't hide the way she speaks.

I don't know her. Maybe she "is" a ditz? Maybe it isn't an act. Who knows? Now "IF" it is an act, I agree.

It's nothing about HOW she speaks, it's what comes out when she does. She can be fun and personable (think Kelly Clarkson) without saying things that makes her seem less intelligent than I'm sure she really is. It's not Kellie particularly that I have a problem with, it's the culture of "airheads" that we seem to cultivating anymore.

You're kidding right? She's a 19 year old kid who's cute and can sing but seems to find it necessary to hide behind the persona of a barefoot, backwoods, ignorant redneck. That's a stereotype I'm sure most North Carolinians are sick of. She's a lousy excuse for a role model for young women. Is she what you'd like to see your daughters emulate? I'm a 42 year old woman who's been around the block more times than I like to count. It shows in my body and my attitude. I learned 25 years ago that being ballsy got me a lot farther than pretending I didn't know what calamari was. What exactly do I have to be jealous of??

My DD is her age. She's far more beautiful. She can't sing a note but she's intelligent, well spoken and can hold her own without "dumbing down" because other people think it's cute. She has respect for herself and background. Now HER I'm jealous of.

I can't believe you said that. We aren't jealous. We are sick of the notion that big ****s and tiny brains are what women need to succeed.

First, a little self-indulgent vent...

Every past year I have been so excited to log onto the DIS to document my opinions about the performances every week, but I just haven't gotten into it this year. I've read through this thread weekly, but just not that into it... Today, I realized why. Although these kids all seem like good kids and some of them do "stand out" for me, it's not like past years. In all of the other seasons, I've quickly identified one or two that I knew were going to make it to the top of the heap and was willing to actually vote for them weekly to make sure that happened. Season 1 it was Tamyra Gray. Season 2 it was Clay Aiken and Josh Gracin. Season 3 it was Latoya London (but otherwise the talent during season 3 was HORRIBLE). Season 4 it was Bo Bice and Constantine Maroulis. But this year - I just haven't been grabbed by any of them. I'm not sure why. I watch. I vote (sometimes). But, I'm just kind of :confused3 about the whole thing.

So last night I tried to get into it and today I'm going to write my reviews.

Bucky - I just don't get it. He has no stage presence, no range, no breath control and he doesn't enunciate his words. There are plenty of really good country rock singers. Bucky isn't one of them. Just blah.

Ace - Interesting. I'm not an Ace fan and think it's past time for him to go, but I actually think the judges were a little hard on him last night. I thought he did an okay job.

Kellie - I don't like Kellie either and am tired of her schtick, but I thought she did a darned good job. The dark eye shadow and serious lighting effects didn't bother me as much as they did some people. I think she showed that she can do more than country. (I'm still not voting for her. Whether the persona is "real" or "convenient," it annoys me and I don't think it's a good one for a woman in the 21st century.)

Chris - Why didn't he pick a song people had heard before?!!! I agree with Simon that his song choices have been a little self-indulgent. I guess he thinks he has a record deal wrapped up already anyway, but what would it hurt to play to the audience a little bit? I thought the song was so bad that I couldn't really even tell if he did a good job or not.

Katharine - She's one of my favorites, but I think that the judges were too nice to her last night. I think when they listen back to it on TV they'll realize how flat she was. Eek. Good call on choosing a ballad though.

Elliot - I like him. I think he did a good job. I voted for him. (But I don't think he'll be the American Idol.)

Taylor - I love Taylor. He has so much fun. It was entertaining. Good call on changing songs. I always agree with Simon, but not last night. I think his "drunk" comment was uncalled for and cruel. I voted for Taylor.

Paris - Well...she did better than I thought she would. I thought she looked great and sounded pretty good. But I just don't "get" her.

My bottom three last night:
Bucky
Paris
Ace

Who should go home:
Bucky

Who will go home:
Ace or Paris

bravo! i'm not 'jealous' of kellie either. i am just irritated that she's what little girls all over America are looking up to  several of her female competitors past and present - lisa, kelly clarkson, for example - have come across to me as bright, talented young ladies with good attitudes (whether or not i cared for their performances). kellie does not. i find her a little embarassing.
