American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I dont like paris at all... yuckers

Me either. Or Kellie. Or Taylor. Though out of those 3 I'd have to say Taylor bugs me the least.

I voted on and off for the whole 2 hours, and maybe got through at most 20 times for Elliott. Woo hoo. Hope that means he's safe...

No Killer Queen??? :confused3 Queen night without Killer Queen??? That made me sad.

I absolutely hated Ace. When he asked Queen to change one of their most popular songs for him??? GIVE ME A BREAK!!! They're QUEEN. QUEEN!!! You're Ace, that guy on AI. THEY'RE QUEEN!!! Amazing to me. I thought it was really, really bad. Then I listened to the playback on the radio this morning. Yikes!!

Kellie Pickler. Wow. I would love to see one week, just ONE where she didn't say something that makes her look like a moron. The first time it was funny, but now it just makes me :furious:. Have some respect for yourself and shut your mouth before you make stupid comments. It's fine if she's really that naive, but she needs to know that now it's getting old when she says a comment like "on paper?? What's that mean?" every week. And her song was bad too. She'll get really far. AI is pimping her.

In defense of Chris, I still love him and think he's the most marketable Idol.

Taylor made me laugh last night and he's a lot of fun. I know that Simon doesn't want him to win, so we'll see about that. Clay Aiken anyone?

Did anyone else think Paris looked like Lil' Kim?

Kellie - expectations were so low for her that she ended up doing better than everyone thought she would. I don't think there would be a good Queen song for her so she gets extra points for having the guts to do this one. She is the only one who took a huge risk tonight and imho, I don't think it hurt her at all.

I agree, anyone who does not or has not liked Kellie wouldn't have been happy with any song choice. This IMO was a difficult theme night for her and I thought, while not Queen, she did a great job performing this song. She is at least entertaining to watch.

All in all I wasn't overly excited about anyones performance, enough to say "Oh my gosh, did you see ____ last night. They were great!"

None of the guest performers have been as good as the contestants, so I think that the talent must be pretty good. We are just getting immune to it.

I don't think Ace changed the song the way he wanted to. If you listen to the dialog between him and Queen, you can see that he wanted the beat changed to a military style. They wouldn't do that. Ace did not change the beat in his performance. I think he listened to what Queen suggested. The only thing he changed was the melody of one section. It was still a bad song choice but I think that the show editted the clip to make him look like even more of an idiot. I would imagine that they could have found negative comments that the band made about each contestant.

That was my take on it too...they showed the worst possible out take they could find for Ace. I agree it was a bad chocie but it wasn't as bad as a lot of people are making it out to be. I really think they needed to tone down the band and they also need to shut that background singer up. The key word is "background" not let's sing as loud as I can so you can't hear the Idol contestant singing.

I so dislike the AI background singers! You sometimes have to strain to hear the contestant through the caterwauling done by these people.

I just wish they would quit with the theme weeks that involve one artist or group. They are forcing these people to sing songs they would never normally attempt to sing. They are drowning the contestants' potential as artists in their own right by not allowing them to be who they are.

I think you are so right on! What we need to see in order to make an accurate judgement about these people is the work that they would be producing if they had a record deal. Like, I just loved Chris' version of "Wanted" but is that what he's going to produce as a recording artist?...absolutely not. Frankly, I think once he's making records, I won't be listening. I think he'll be a little too much for me.

I took a listen the other day to some of the music that Taylor's been making on his own, and I would buy the heck out of his CDs for sure. If only he'd get a chance to perform some of that on the show. He won't though.

I think Elliot gave the best performace last night.

I was on the computer, with my back to the tv while he was on, and goodness! I thought I was listening to Freddie Mercury!

I loved Bucky's version!

BTW, some dude on Nashville star sang the same song Bucky did, Tim McGraw...and I have to say, Bucky, YOU RULE! People have said Nashville Star's talent puts AI to shame, but not in this song by song comparison.

Kelly I thought looked like it was all for show. She seemed stiff, and unnatural. I think Paris has proven to be very versatile.

I'm tired of Chris.

No opinion on Katherine. I am not sure if I like her or not.

Taylor, I can take him or leave him.

I don't think Ace will be around much longer.

First off, you guys are CRAZY! Chris was incredible. His song wasn't a "well-known" Queen song which is why nobody liked the song choice.

First of all I think Chris will probably win, but I was really disappointed with his choice and I thought Simon was dead on. That was his chance to really do something and he should have stepped up with one of the powerful Queen song, not one that nobody ever really wanted to hear.

Can someone PM me Estelle's full review of last night? I can't log into her site at work.

Thanks!!

While I wasn't thrilled with any of the song choices last night, I liked Elliot the best. Thought Kellie and Taylor did a good job. Chris was okay but I couldn't understand much of the words. Was expecting better out of Paris and Katherine. Don't care for Bucky or Ace but at least I could understand what Bucky was saying this time.

I agree, the backup singers and the band need to tone it down.

I think that the first season had the best themes for songs. They need to do something about their choices.

I forgot to mention my favorite moment from last night. Did anyone else catch Bucky's comment to Ryan, "Quoting Freddie Mercury, I had nobody to jump up behind, but you gotta take what you're given." Now, I'm thinking he is referring to being the first performer out, but that quote gave me a horrible case of the giggles.

I have been waiting all morning and then I remembered her last statement from last week's review:

"Sorry Dear Readers, but there will be no Estelle’s Review next week. I’m in New York filming a series of Arby commercials where I play Joan Rivers’ mother.

PEACE! - Estelle

Looks like no review this week.

The contestants seem to be in a no win situation. They are told that they need to make a song there own, but when someone changes things up (like Ace attempted) they are put down. Yet when they don't change anything they are told they are too karaoke.

I agree. I think Chris has incredible talent and appeal, but his song choices are often off the mark.

It's like he's trying SO hard to be different/non-mainstream that he forgets that most (not all) listeners LIKE mainstream. That's why it IS mainstream!!

Ace - Big rule number two? Don't pick a song that is sung 80% of the time by drunken sports fans who basically shout it while swaying back and forth at hockey games.

:lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2:

I couldn't think of why that song was so wrong. THAT is the reason! :)

Actually I heard the reason that Taylor changed songs was because Ace had already picked We Will Rock You and pretty much those 2 songs go hand in hand (heck, they are practically one song) and he said it wouldn't be fair to Ace because he would feel he was unfairly competing against him. He didn't want the judges comparing the two of them unfairly.

My Dh thinks that Taylor just wanted to say he sang "We are the Champions" on stage with Queen...something to brag about and remember. He probably had little intention of singing it for Idol. Maybe. "Crazy Little Thing called Love" was the perfect Queen song for him. he was awesome.

I agree with the previous comments about the band and the backup singers...you had to strain to actually hear the contestants.

I feel kind of sorry for Ace as he was only trying to do what Chris did with "Walk The Line". Everyone raved about him making the song his own, but Ace gets treated like a child and told "no" by the band.

Do you think Kellie is really that dumb? I keep thinking a lot of it is put-on. It's like she's been watching too many Hee Haw reruns. Kellie Mae Clampett?

Taylor, Taylor, Taylor. He just cracks me up! He's kind of a cross between Elvis Presley and Steve Martin. I personally don't think he is a talented as a couple of the other contestants...but the guy is a showman!

I agree with Simon that Chris ruined a perfect opportunity by picking such an obscure song. He could have brought the house down with a different selection.

Bucky needs to go home. He seems like a really nice guy but just isn't in the same league as the others.

Paris also chose a song that was totally wrong for her. And that whole dominatrix look has got to go...she's just a kid!

I've lumped Katharine and Elliott together as they both had good performances but nothing that really stood out for me.

All in all, the night was a little disappointing for me. Let's face it -- nobody does Queen like Freddie Mercury!

If I was just rating Chris's performance without including his song choice he did great. I have to totally agree with Simon though if Chris picked a popular Queen blockbuster he could have had a moment. I really feel the song he choose was bland and boring. All in all it wont make a difference I dont think to the final outcome. The boy has talent and he's still in my opinion the only candidate of this caliber.

Kellie looked scary but she pulled off the song and was entertaining. I have had enough of her but I guess she will be around at least another week.

I have a hard time fairly judging Paris because I just dont like her personality. I have to keep reminding myself shes a kid! I wish she would act like one sometimes. I didnt get her performance last night and I didnt like it either. I'm ready for her to go.

Katharine, eh I wasnt wowed. I actually choose that moment to walk out of the room a moment. I was done listening to her. I feel like she peaked and thats all were getting from her. She could go home tonight, wouldnt bother me at all.

I thought Bucky was terrific last night! I know I'm partial cause I just like him a lot. When you think about it though liking someones personality has its place in this compition too. I thought he entertained and sang well. I hope he stays on a bit longer but I know people are divided over him.

Ace its time to pay the piper. Oh boy I have had enough of him slaughtering songs. Last night was a classic example of how he makes me cringe when he sings. Granted he was better than some of his other performances but it doesnt make the grade for me. At least he skipped the dazed and confused stares last night. Upbeat rock suited him better than holding his shirt out and pointing to a scar on his collar bone. OK Ace you can go home tonight, please.

I love Taylor. He just shines and I love his spunk. I knew Simon would knock him. I was so happy to see him back to his old self last night. I also dont think it was his best vocals last night but the whole package made him entertaining once again. I will be very surprised if he isnt one of the final three.

Elliott has talent but I just dont see him going all the way with this. He did OK for me last night. I dont find any of his performances to be memorable. Hes lacking star qualities. I need to listen to his music again without looking at him and see if I have the same opinion. I guess he has a fan base and will be around for a while but not really confident on that.

My guess is ACE goes bye bye tonight.
