American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

OK, I have calmed down since last night and I've been thinking about the history of AI today.
I didn't watch the first season until only 4 people were left. It was on in the summer that year, and I had better things to do! The first episode I saw was when Tamyra got ousted instead of Nikki McKibbin (what happened to her?). I think Kelly was the right choice of those 4 and she has done well, but her major success has been AFTER she dumped the contract she had with Simon and could record her own stuff.
I watched a lot of season 2, but don't remember liking anyone in particular. I voted for Clay over Ruben. I think Ruben was a huge (no pun intended) mistake. He can't sustain performing the length of a concert in the physical shape he is in, and without concerts, there is no real promotion. Remember he was going to lose weight on one of the ET type shows, but quit after only a few weeks and gave up the diet? I'm not fat bashing here, but singing and dancing for 1 1/2-2 hours requires energy and STAMINA. As for Clay, I haven't liked anything he's done really, but I'm not a big adult-contemporary type person. And notice how he's been laying so low since those "scandals" broke in the wintertime?
Season 3 I did have a clear favorite-Jennifer Hudson, our own DCL Wonder singer. She made it to 5th. I was so p.o'd when she got voted off too. But look at her now! She has one of the 3 leads in the "Dreamgirls" movie and beat out Fantasia for the role. Why? Because casting experts and not the American public pick movie roles! The final that year was a joke because no way was Diana good enough to be the "idol", and Jasmine was useless. I thought Fantasia was screechy and a poor role model, trotting out the baby whenever things got rocky for her.
Season 4 I liked Constantine . After he left I liked Carrie. Scott and Anthony were jokes.
Now this season, at least you can say no one in the final four is a joke. There is no Anthony or Scott. They are all talented--heck, go back one week and even Paris is talented. It is a horse race now. Yes I liked Chris more than I have ever EVER liked any one contestant on AI. But people are right to say that he is better off--can you imagine him having to record a "Moment Like This" or "Flying Without Wings" type of song? YUCK!!! I have never heard of Fuel until they have been mentioned lately here (I like rock, but not anything recent, LOL) but I can see myself perhaps buying a CD if Chris is on it. The only way I'd buy a Katherine CD is if my DD#1 wanted it (she has Kelly C. and Carrie's CDs). That's her type of stuff.

That is the biggest bunch of sour grapes I think I have ever seen. Give me a break. I'm sad to see him go too, but what is fair is fair. They didn't do a "recount" of the votes for any contestant thus far, I highly doubt this petition is going to make them start now.

I know last season there was some website that downloaded the whole show (however, they may have been shut down). For some strange reason, I feel like watching the reactions of Simon, Paula, Chris, and Kat again (I think it'll be good for a laugh to watch the judges' faces).

I think Chris would do well in Fuel, most of the material is in his vocal range, unlike the slaughter job he did on "I Dare You." I've seen Shinedown perform that song live more times than I'm willing to admit and Brent doesn't try to hit those notes live except at very special performances.

I think that if you want a real answer to that question for yourself, you need to listen without looking. There are plenty of places on the internet that you can hear any of these contestant's past performances. Try it out and decide for yourself. Don't look - just listen. Simon does this all the time.

For me, the answer to this with respect to Taylor is, of course, a big time yes. In fact, while I liked him from the beginning, I think I became a REAL big fan after I started just listening to him while driving, doing laundry, jogging, etc.

To each his own on that one.

HAs anybody heard that there may be as many as 10,000 votes "missing" from last nights tally? I don't know how there would be votes missing (unless somebody counts them by hand). I suppose the people with the petition may have started the rumor, but is it possible or can anyone else confirm hearing this rumor?

It's like Anthony making it to the final 3 last year. He's just out of his league!

Actually Anthony made it to the final four and then was eliminated. The final three were Carrie, Bo and Vonzell

I like Elliot and Taylor, and Katherine was the best female they had...but not ONE of them is worthy of the AI title. Chris is the best performer AI has ever seen...hands down.

In truth, Mandisa was far and away the best female they had but she didn't look like Katharine does so her tremendous talent made little difference.

I think the ratings with a Taylor/Chris final would be much higher than any combination of the other three.

Without question. Whichever two are now in the finale will not draw as well as Taylor/Chris would have.

I was unhappy as can be with the outcome last year but in retrospect, it was really just sour grapes on my part. Bo doing as well as he did probably did more damage to his career than helped it even if he did get a lot of exposure. AI is just lousy for rockers and I think that they need to think carefully before they commit to the show.

So, I think next week's theme (if you acn call it that) is judges choice. So what song do you think they'll pick for the remaining 3?
How about "Soul Man" for Taylor?? Or anything by Joe Cocker (Night Moves?).

Night Moves might make a nice choice of song for Taylor but it's a Bob Seger song, it's not by Joe Cocker.

I will miss Chris very much on the show the next couple of weeks but I'm sure we'll be seeing and hearing him very soon. I think the final two will be Taylor and Katharine with Taylor winning.

I'm off to watch American Idol Extra on Fox Reality Channel at 6:30. Can't wait to see Chris' exit interview. I'm even giving up the first 20 minutes of the Yankees/Red Sox game!

You know....how could I forget Mandisa??(I did miss a few shows right before she left) Katherine was the best, IMO AFTER Mandisa..but I guess I was so ticked off last night after Chris got voted off, I think my mind was loopy! I will correct myself....Mandisa was the most talented female(and beautiful...weight has nothing to do with it)....hands down!

I think that it was Elliott having such a strong night that made the votes swing. It sounds like a lot of people voted for both Chris and Elliott, which they don't usually do, to keep Elliott in. Well, it kinda backfired. However, Idol is all about creating opportunities for those who need them, and it looks like it has certainly worked out in Chris's favour.

BTW, anybody know if Taylor is seeing anyone? What about Kat or Elliot? .

I believe Elliott has a girlfriend back home - apparantly she told several people he would pull on his right ear for her during a performance, and then he actually did do that, so perhaps it's true

I heard that for some people along the East Coast, when you dialed Chris's number you got the Katharine recording and a lot of others saying that they just got a recording saying the number was not in service.

I think this happens every year when there are so many votes coming in.

Richmond is really gearing up for Elliott tomorrow!

They have a big motorcade thing planned for him through The Fan in downtown Richmond on the way to The Diamond where he is going to sing the National Anthem for the Braves game.

Matt is holding out hope that Elliott will show up in my store since it's just down the street from where he lives and it's Mothers Day this weekend and he'll need a card for Mama Yamin!

I loved one person I saw on another board complaining that the vote was unfair because they had thunderstorms in their area that caused their phone lines to go down - umm.. well, then it was evenly unfair to all the contestants then dude because NOBODY got votes from your area!

I've gotten the error message too.

I wonder why they don't assign a larger block of numbers to each contestant, especially when it gets down to the wire?
Maybe if people were able to get through so they felt like their votes actually counted, there wouldn't be so many crazy conspiracy theories.

Seriously, all of these sour grapes are kind of amusing. Just because someone is expected to win doesn't mean that they will. Besides, I've heard more often that Taylor is expected to win.
