American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

did you see Taylor's name and number on the screen when they were playing back Mandisa's performance??

More American Idol Phone Number Madness, Wrong Number For Mandisa

American Idol now has it’s first official phone number screw-up for Season Five. During Mandisa’s performance of “Wanna Praise You,” something went wrong with the graphics on the bottom of the screen. The graphics first displayed the correct name and phone number for Mandisa, but without the familiar blue background. The background changed from yellow to red, and when the background finally got to blue, it was showing the wrong name and phone number. The blue graphics showed Taylor Hick’s name and phone number while Mandisa was singing.

I really hope we don't have to do a revote and reshow the performances again....remember when this happened last year (or was it the year before)?

But when that happened that other season, the name did not match the number. As long as the name matches the number, it shouldn't matter when it was shown. It just flashed Taylor Idol 4 for about a second. It didn't say that Taylor was Idol 5 or Mandisa was Idol 4, so really no misinformation was given out.

last night was a waste of my time except for taylor's performance.

that's my story and i am sticking to it !!

SSB has to admit was not much of a fan of his before, but did think that he had the best performance last night. Tough (as in not great selection) for Chris... as he is better than that showed, for certain.

Folks, I still don't get it.

The judges tell the contestants to "stretch, come out of your comfort zone", but when they do, the judges say, "that's not who you are". I don't know who's more confused, the judges, the contestants, or folks like me! :rotfl2:

I think there is an area between comfort zone and pure karaoke that the contestants need to find. They need to pick a good song and mix it up just enough to show their personality and range, but not copy it exactly like the singer did it (or a band who did a cover of the song). Last night was an example of karaoke at it's finest. Each one of them did the song exactly like it was written, leading the viewer to make comparisons to the original artists. Resulting in the worst. show. ever.

I don't get it either. They have a 21 century night, so most people are going to be familiar with the songs. WE actually are going to compare it the songs to the original artists...so if the singer changes it up a bit we are not going to like it. The judges say, make it your own...they sing it their own way and the judges say "This song was so popular and the fans expect it to sound like the original, so glad you made it your own...but it stunk up the place big time you should have sang just like 'insert name here'

You know what I would like to hear...brand new songs. Get the song writers in, write everyone a song that fits their particular style and let them sing it. That way no one would have anyone to compare them to and we could really see just what they can do as an artists.

I am just not impressed with this group of "talent". Sure, they are good singers and performers (OK, I love Taylor the most), but I get surprised each time I watch at how "not so impressed" I am. If this is really the best of what they found across America, YIKES! :teeth:

Oh God...country next week??? Guess I won't be watching next weeks show.

I think we need to ship BUcky and Kellie ovr to Nashville Star!

I thought of something that bothered me last night. I think the show was way too rushed. I wish it had been 1 1/2 hours instead of just one.

Some completely random observations:

One of the things I love the most about Taylor is that he just doesn't seem to care. Like when he gets criticism from the judges he just laughs in that amused way he has about him.

Kellie - She's in no way my favorite, but here's why I think her simple country girl thing is no act. She keeps apologizing for herself. Did anyone else notice that? When she receives criticism, her response is "I'm sorry." Over and over again. I used to have this problem and I got over it REAL fast as an adult as soon as I realized that this sends out an open invitation for people to walk all over you. I cringe every time she does it. Apologize only when your actions clearly adversely affect someone else. Do not apologize for who you are.

Paris- I was really really bothered by the hair. The singers are obviously going to cover other artist's songs, but they should not try to become the other artist. She was nothing but a little Beyonce impersonator last night.

Chris could have so rocked with many other Creed songs, while still pacifying this audience. I liked it, but this was not the audience for that. Hope it didn't hurt him.

I voted for Taylor til my fingers fell off.

he did a horrible Bo Bice impersonation

Oh, I never knew that Bo Bice was the original singer for "I Don't Wanna Be."

OMG! Estelle's review had me :rotfl2: . Love her stuff!

can you do a cut and paste? It says we have to join the group to access your link. I don'tr really want to join up.

It really isn't a family friendly article. ;)

I like Chris but every song he has done since the top 12 have all sounded exactly the same. He seems to be screaming in the same manner that Mandisa is but in a different octave.

Neither one of them would make it at all on Nashville Star. The talent I see on that show puts Idol to shame.

Just a random thought, but I have to share it with DISers: Whenever they show the fans after a performance and they focus on the family or friends of the current singer, I can't help but want one of these times for it to say "Rabbit's Friends and Relations" like in Winnie the Pooh.

Okay, I'm glad I got that off my chest. :sunny:

They are talking about AI on the radio right now and they just replayed Chris. Even though I don't like the song, his voice was actually pretty good.

Katharine actually sounded a bit better in a replay also.

They shunned Bucky and didn't play but a fraction of a second of him. They think he's going home.
