American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Neither one of them would make it at all on Nashville Star. The talent I see on that show puts Idol to shame.

I'd agree with that in regards to the first season of Nashville Star but since then not so much. Last years winner was terrible, Carrie Underwood blew her out of the water.

Yes, because I would venture to say that country music artists tend to be better "vocalists."

(frantically running from the flames)

Note that I like all kinds of music, including some heavier rock, some adult contemporary, but I still think that statement is true. Country singers are true "singers."

Covington returns to his country roots for ‘Idol’ performance

By R. Shawn Lewis/Richmond County Daily Journal
Wednesday, March 29, 2006 12:32 AM EST

So long, Jessica Simpson and Buddy Holly.

Bucky’s back in Tinseltown.

Richmond County’s Bucky Covington returned to his country roots on Tuesday’s “American Idol,” complete with faded jeans, cowboy boots and a black cowboy hat.

The 28-year-old stole the show with his rousing rendition of Tim McGraw’s “Real Good Man.”

“Man, didn’t that feel good? I tell you what. That felt good,” Bucky said in a phone interview from Hollywood.

At least one of the “Idol” judges agreed.

“Definitely the right choice for you, man!” judge Randy Jackson said. “I like that better.”

After two theme weeks (Stevie Wonder and the 1950s) that really didn’t suit Bucky, the nation’s most famous singing body shop worker rediscovered his style in a big way during 21st century week.

“I felt comfortable with it,” Bucky said. “And I was happy with it. I just hope it was enough.”

If last year’s “Idol” winner, Carrie Underwood, has any pull, it might just have been.

“One of the producers came up to me after the show and said Carrie Underwood texted him a message and said to tell Bucky he’s got all of my votes,” he said.

The fans speak

Bucky’s family and fans raved about the performance.

“I thought that was awesome,” said Terra Covington, the singer’s sister-in-law.

Terra was among the crowd gathered around the big screen on Rockingham’s Cole Plaza. Rockingham Downtown Corp. staged a block party to rally around Bucky, who was among the bottom two vote-getters last week.

“He ain’t going nowhere right now,” she said. “I loved the new look and the new outfit. I think a lot of people will.”

Diane Masterson, whose boyfriend Eric Whitfield plays in Caddy Wampus with Bucky and his twin Rocky, raved about the performance.

“I’ve been saying the whole time that he ought to go back to that look. He was just so good,” Masterson said.

Simon says

As usual, the praise wasn’t as forthcoming from judge Simon Cowell. Cowell, an Englishman, apparently didn’t follow Bucky’s Richmond County twang.

“I couldn’t understand a single word you said,” Cowell scoffed.

“I don’t get that,” Bucky said. “My vocal coach just came up to me and said it was good. We’ve been working on that.”

Bucky’s fans heard every word.

“It’s a southern ‘thang,’ Mr. Cowell. You wouldn’t understand,” one woman said.

“I heard everything just fine,” said Emily Tucker, interim director of the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce. “I don’t know what Simon is talking about. We understand Bucky just fine.

“He did Richmond County proud.”

Rocky agreed.

“That right there just shows that Simon Cowell is not a country music fan and that gets in the way of him being a fair judge,” Rocky said. “That was a great choice and Bucky nailed it.

“Bucky did a heckuva job. You have to look past your own opinions and judge the song. He’s getting me a little agitated.”

But Bucky wasn’t the only one feeling Cowell’s wrath.

“He ain’t been nice to nobody,” Rocky said. “At least he’s being fair that way.”

Bucky’s father, Gene, said he understood the judge’s motive.

“He gets paid big money for his remarks,” Gene said. “He’s dogged everyone tonight. Ol’ Simon, he’s gotta get his two cents in.

“The show wouldn’t be the same without him. Let’s face it, though. Simon ain’t no country singer.”

The competition

Bucky faces elimination along with nine other contestants. They are:

Lisa Tucker, who sang “Because of You” by former “Idol” winner Kelli Clarkson.

“It was an OK version of it. Just all right, not good,” Jackson said.

“You gotta take a new twist on the song and make it your own,” judge Paula Abdul said.

“It was painful,” Cowell said.

Tucker has been among the three lowest vote-getters two weeks in a row.

Kellie Pickler of Albemarle sang “Suds in a Bucket” by Sara Evans.

“I’m just a little puzzled by the song choice,” Jackson said. “I think you’re better than that.”

“You’ve got six years of songs to choose from and you choose ‘Soap Suds in a Bucket,’” Cowell said.

Ace Young sang “Drops of Jupiter” by Train.

“Once again, completely the wrong song,” Jackson said.

Abdul was more fascinated by Young’s scar than his vocal performance.

“That wasn’t a great vocal,” Cowell said. “I actually thought it was quite karaoke.”

Taylor Hicks sang “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne.

“To me, it wasn’t a great song because it didn’t let you show off,” Jackson said.

“I quite liked the song,” Cowell said. “I thought it was an excellent vocal.”

Mandisa sang “Shackles (Wanna Praise You)” by Mary Mary.

“The song choice, I don’t quite get it,” Jackson said.

Abdul disagreed, saying 40 million Americans are now worshipping at “the church of Mandisa.”

Cowell described it as “a bit indulgent. I just didn’t get that.”

Chris Daughtry of McLeansville sang “What If” by Creed.

“It wasn’t my favorite,” Jackson said. “You were sharp most of that song.”

“That was indulgent,” Cowell said. “There is a line you don’t cross. Creed would not be seen dead on this show.”

Katherine McPhee sang “The Voice Within” by Christina Aguilera.

“You sang it kinda just like the record,” Jackson said. “You didn’t bring anything new to it.”

Cowell disagreed.

“I thought it was the best tonight,” he said. “Almost — almost as good as Christina.”

Paris sang “Work It Out” by Beyonce.

Cowell called her effort “precocious.”

Elliott sang “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin DeGraw.

Cowell criticized the arrangement.

What’s next?

Bucky will learn his fate before a live audience at 9 p.m. today on Fox (Time Warner Cable 11, satellite channel 18.)

“I think Bucky’s in the clear,” Rocky said.

“I think that will keep him in there tonight,” Gene said.

Bucky thanked his growing legion of fans for their votes.

“I wouldn’t be this far without Richmond County supporting me,” he said. “I’m having a ball. Every time they pick that up that phone and vote, they’re making my dream come true.

“Tell everybody just thank you so much. I’m more happy to make y’all proud of me than I am anything else.”

My $.02 on a pretty terrible night of Idol:

Lisa - Because of You - Wow. Um...Look, I've defended Lisa quite a bit on here, and I agree with Paula that she does have a phenomenal voice...but that song was way too big for her. Sadly, i think that may have been her last chance.

Kellie - Suds in the Bucket - Right genre, wrong song. I like country, but I can't stand that song, and Kellie didn't do anything to make me change that opinion. She could shine next week if she stays away from Martina and Faith.

Ace - Drops of Jupiter - Like the song...didn't like his version of it. There are several better singers in the competition, so I wouldn't be upset in the least if he was to exit stage left tonight.

Taylor - Trouble - Didn't know the song, but definitely enjoyed it. Hasn't had an "off" week yet, and he's the only one that can say that. Still my favorite of the guys.

Mandisa - Wanna Praise You - Bad. REALLY bad. I'm not a huge fan of hers to begin with, but that performance made me really long for the day that Ryan tells her it's time to go.

Chris - What If - Liked his performance, but he could have chosen a much better song for this audience. Still, his was one of only three performances on the night that I could imagine hearing on the radio.

Katharine - The Voice Within - ACK! Katherine, I love you to death and all, but do NOT try to sing Christina, particularly not THAT song. Don't know what the judges were smoking, but that wasn't even close to Christina's performance. There is a pantheon of singers that you have to be very carefull when covering 'cause it's all-too-easy to butcher them...and Christina is one of them.

Bucky - Real Good Man - Sorry, non-country fans, but Bucky was incredible last night. I'm a big Tim McGraw fan, and Bucky definitely did him justice last night. I'm honestly starting to think that Bucky could have a definite career in music when this is all over, win or lose.

Paris - Work It Out - Was a pretty good performance, but I'm just not a big fan of hers anymore. There is precisely zero chance I would buy anything she produced.

Elliott - I Don't Wanna Be - I just don't get the love for the little psychotic Amish guy :teeth: Yeah, he's not a bad singer, but he's hardly "star" quality, either. If I was to see the Idol tour, his set would be the point in the show where I'd hit the concession stand. :confused3

Best of the night: Taylor, Bucky, Chris
Worst of the night: Ace, Lisa, Mandisa, Katherine, Elliott

Going home should be: Ace
Going home will be: Lisa

I like Chris but every song he has done since the top 12 have all sounded exactly the same. He seems to be screaming in the same manner that Mandisa is but in a different octave.

Too funny, SC Minnie!

PS: missing SC!

Oh, I never knew that Bo Bice was the original singer for "I Don't Wanna Be."

He's not - Gavin Degraw is. Bo sang it last season though.

I didn't watch last year all that much, was last year the one with the girl that sings Kerosene? The one before with George in it was pretty good. This year looks good too. I caught a bit of it last night.

Article from Bucky's hometown: he's getting Carrie Underwood' votes

Wouldn't that be like saying that someone from last year should've gotten Fantasia's votes??? :confused3

How about who's voting for Kellie Bundy? Bucky may have a following but they sure didn't support him last week.

I guess every hometown has to tout their "person"... Atlanta quickly got off the Kinnik train and jumped on Paris', THEN they claimed to have a Mandisa connection...

So far the only "homeboy" of mine on this show has been Barry Manilow!
:woohoo:

I only watched the first season of Nashville Star. But I was impressed with the talent then. I think everyone on that show was not just a singer, but a musician. (there's a difference IMO) They even had an original song night.
I'm guessing that would be the end of the road for some of the current AI contestants. ;)

I actually have my DVR set to tape NS, but when they have guest judges like Larry the cable guy and now some WWE guy... it really makes you wonder.
:confused3

But I digress, sorry.
Back to AI...

I might be wrong, but I think you are misreading what the article said. I'm reading it to say that Bucky is getting all of Carrie Underwood's personal votes - as in she is personally voting for no one but Bucky.

I know, I was being sarcastic. But with everyone comparing Elliott's performance to Bo's from last year (which I remember as well), you'd think he WAS the original artist. And I personally didn't even like Bo's version.

Love your summary of last night's show. I totally agree. Now, I have to pull for my alabamian (Taylor) but I believe my favorite is Chris and Catherine. Yeah, I'm ready for Lisa, Ace, and Paris to go. Paris is a very good performer but I can't stand when she talks. Anxious to see the results!

I'm not sure how DialIdol comes up with its "Scores". The lowest-"scored" singer this week actually was fifth out of ten in terms of busy signals, came in FIRST in terms of DialIdol-ers voting for the singer, and SECOND in terms of the "total".

I mentioned earlier that I thought Bo's version was even better than the original which is why I would compare Elliott's hippity hop version to Bo's. But, for those who didn't hear this last year, Gavin DeGraw himself called Bo last year and told him he had done good. Now I might be wrong, but I'm doubting Gavin picked up the phone for Elliott.

Here's part of the article:

HARTSELLE — About 35 minutes before "American Idol" splashed over the big-screen television here Wednesday night at Steele's Karaoke & Event Center, Nancy Downes' cell phone rang.

It was her son, Bo Bice, checking in from Hollywood. First, he wanted his mother to again thank everyone in Morgan County for supporting him.

Then he said, "Listen to this. Gavin DeGraw called and told me what a good job I did on his song. He said, 'I want to open for you someday.' "

In Tuesday's competition, Bice covered DeGraw's "I Don't Want To Be (Anything Other Than Me)."

I don't understand it either. I just went to double check what I had read this morning and they have changed it in the last few hours. How can the numbers change today?

I looked on their forum and it appears that they are playing with the program's formulas to try and make the results more accurate. I think I might have to stop reading their info if it's going to change 12 hours after the voting ended.

How can the numbers change today?
The software runs on an automated basis. For folks who have dial-up connections, they cannot report the stats until they reconnect to the Internet, which might have taken until just now.

So, do what do you think of the current numbers? If the lowest got the second highest number of votes do you really think they are the lowest?

I always find it amazing when people say that they can't stand Paris. I guess people really find it annoying for a 17 year old to be nice, respectful and confident. She isn't cocky, she just knows that God has blessed her with a talent and she won't apologize for it. That "something" about her that people say annoys them, is just self-confidence. I can only hope that my DD-9 will grow up to be so confident. Oh, she can sing her non-Beyonce having butt off.

I have to say all the singers sounded terrible last night. That seem to be the sentiment of my friends and family. Chris who I love sounded like he screamed the whole song. I honestly could not wait for the show to end. Lisa is the one I think will be going home. The bottom three will be, Lisa, Ace and Bucky. I am still hoping Chris wins. Katherine is also a close second than Mandisa. Paris can go home at any time. I just don't care for her voice or her attitude. I guess we will see tonight what happens.
