American Girl Doll Question

I don't regret a dime I spent on my DD's American Girl dolls! She loved those dolls and played with them many, many hours. It is one of the few things left that let little girls be little girls and play with their imaginations rather than it being done for them.

She still loves them and they are on display in her bedroom here at home and she is 20.

I don't regret for one second the money spent on dd's AG dolls and accessories! She will have those to pass on to her dd or if she does not have a dd maybe one of our son's will. Either way, they are never going to be a waste of money.

Sorry to hear that your niece is getting American Girl dolls. It is like little girl crack!

If we had invested all the American Girl money spent instead of wasting it on dolls that sit on a shelf...

If we were all to invested the money we spend on Disney trips, food and souvenirs we would all be sitting pretty someday too.

But life is short and that 'someday' is no guarantee. Disney trips and American Girl Dolls make little girls (and not-so-little girls) smile. I see no harm in that at all.

DD really wants McKenna's bed but we compromised and I ordered the triple bunk bed from Badger Basket instead as she was more interested in the accessories than the bed itself. $40 is a lot better than $200+. I'll probably get DD the balance beam and ribbon set for Christmas, but no more dolls. Of course that's what we said last year.

We haven't tried the clothes from Target but we've had good luck with the accessories. I've also found some pretty good bargains on Craigslist, last year she got Josephina, her bed, an armoire and a bunch of small items for $100 from a local college girl.

OP- you can call one of the AG stores directly and speak with a personal shopper. They can pull the McKenna items that you are interested in but may be sold out online and ship them to you. That is what my SIL did before a AG store opened near her in Boston.

I think the target age for the 18 inch AG dolls is 7/8-12(ish), so she may be way too young still. You may want to just put the dolls in their boxes away until she is older.

A Samantha that is new in the box should be worth something as she is now retired. DD got her first one at 6 (Samantha) and she painted her nails! That is her first doll and her namesake so that one we will keep, I don't know about the other 10 or so.

You can get Felicity's head replaced at the doll hospital. I second putting them up until she is older- I got my first AG doll at 7, and I feel like I appreciated it so much more because I was a little older.

I still have all my dolls displayed in my room, and I still love them, even at 20.

I want Caroline too! My DH was like Unforunately, I have many years until DD is old enough for one (and then I already have my 2 from when I was little).

There are also sometimes AG items at Costco and Sam's Club. They have had craft sets to design a t-shirt for dolls, make accessories...and they have had the pet animals too.

My DD8 and her friends all are into American Girl right now! AG has quality items so there are some things we like to get from AG. The dolls themselves are much nicer than the knock offs. But there are many accessories and clothes that others have that are just great! As a previous poster mentioned, Target carries the OUR GENERATION brand that fits AG dolls. They frequently have sales as well on those items. I do not like the OG dolls but the accessories are great and much lower priced than AG. I recommend AG dolls, the pets, the matching clothes, and some of the quality furniture but OG is fine for lots of things too. We got a nice closet, hair styling chair and accessories, and 'food' accessories from OG and really like them.

DD has asked for McKenna for Christmas. I'm going to be ordering her soon, it'll be her first AG doll.

My dd17 has 7 AG dolls. Yep, her grandma spoiled her with 6 of them and we lucked out and found a perfect Samantha at a garage sale for $25 long ago in the pre-Ebay days. She still treasures every last one of them.

I second the idea to check craft shows for clothes. We found some fabulous things that way. We've even gotten some hand crafted doll furniture at a craft show.

Years ago, one of my DD drew with blue ink all of her sister's Barbie dolls. Someone told me to put zit cream (like Clearasil) on it and within a week, all of the ink was gone. Maybe you can save Felicity!

I am a doll maker (and repairer) by trade and I second the zit cream for stains on vinyl dolls. You should leave it for a week, preferrably in a sunny spot. Something strong like Oxy "on the spot" if you have that in the US

Thanks for all the great advice! I texted my sister-in-law to ask if it was okay if I got items that were not specific to MacKenna and she said that would be fine, and that she understands a lot of that doll's items are not available. I think I will look at some of the other outfits - but my gosh, there is a LOT to choose from! Maybe I will narrow it down to the ones that have a matching child sized outfit...

I wish my sister-in-law had chosen one of the dolls from another time period. That would have been wonderful and very educational. Maybe if my niece likes MacKenna, I'll get her one of those for Christmas.

We celebrated my DD's birthday at the AG store in Chicago last year....her ABSOLUTE FAVORITE thing that she wanted more than anything was PJ's for her and her doll that matched. And the PJs have held up really well in nearly a year of wear.
