We have this and it is automatically activated for $19.99 for each rental car period. We opt for this level of coverage because it covers "loss of use" and "administrative fees" if the car suffers damage and is out of service. Of course AmEx will only pay if there is a 90% rental in that type of vehicle but at least you are covered. I have heard some rental companies will not provide AmEx with the records required. We have never had a ding on vacation however. The break even point is of course, two days. I am a little conflicted about a 4 day rental. Any thoughts?
Our last rental was a beach destination. Lots of of birds and a few "white spots" on the car. I did notice when we returned this black car that it got a lot of scrutiny. I have never had that level of scrutiny before but have stuck with lighter colored cars. When I called Amex to ask about the loss damage waiver, I asked what color car had the most claims. She told me dark gray. I am sticking or silver or white for rentals.

I enjoy it as a companion for our personal insurance; because, AMEX become the primary insurer on it. Much cheaper than buying insurance from the rental agency.

There are several threads on the Flyer Talk forums about this, as well as here on the DIS, where this coverage has been discussed.

I used it and did have a ding. The big advantage of it ( in my opinion) is that it covers vehicles other than simple passenger cars ( like 15 person vans). As other have said the fact that it is primary insurance is good.

I signed the " damage" thing at the airport and I think the bill was in our mailbox before we actually got home. It was not a lot, like 350 or so. I called alamo told them amex would be taking care of it. amex then proceeded to send me emails ever 2 weeks letting me know where the process was. I had to call alamo twice to get them to send amex the required documents and then I stopped hearing from either of them.

I'm a big fan of it.

Good to know. I have used it for several years but haven't thought much about it until we got to the counter and were badgered beyond the usual by the Dollar rep. This time, no badgering, so I guess it depends upon the location.
