America

Honest question: you're 80yo. You have a hypertensive crisis. You have no means of paying for medical intervention. In such a case, will the State foot the bill? What about if you're 30yo, but for various reasons unable to work?
Medicaid or disability aid.

Interesting... so the American system is actually partially socialised as it is anyway?
It's meant for the poor or disabled. I don't know the details. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will explain better than me. As far as I'm aware, it covers basic things but maybe more depending on the US state. I also forgot about Medicare which you get at 65 but you have to buy more plans to gain more insurance coverage.

Very interesting... Thanks, Buzz!

That is only true if you don't have assets. If you have money or possessions the hospital will chase you to pay that bill. If you can only pay a portion? They'll take that and you can declare bankruptcy to get out of the rest.

Medical expenses are the leading cause of filing bankruptcy in the US. It's a major economic issue IMO.

(I'm also not a fan of the employer provided health insurance model as it stifles innovation and puts additional strain on people who get laid off... but that is a different discussion)
They don't chase you. They send you bills and then maybe they send them to collections if you don't pay. It will hurt your credit, but laws have been changed where it doesn't hurt your credit that much, and I believe anything under 500 doesn't get reported now.
Most hospitals have no interest payment plans. I used one for a family member and then 5 months later they offered me a 50% discount. I paid it off.

Medical expenses are an issue, but I wouldn't say it's our biggest issue. Most Americans are in debt up to their eyeballs anyway.

How did you even ready that into his statement? You've made no secret of your disdain for Americans. Frankly, I couldn't care less how you feel....I'm just glad I live in the GREAT USA and no other country.
Oh please. Give it a rest. I have no disdain for the USA.
I’m glad to live in Canada. Love visiting USA of course but love my country.

Next time put “Americans only” if you only want Americans to post in a thread. It’s a message board for Pete’s sake.

I said nothing negative about the USA besides the fact I think we have a better Mat leave system. If you are going to get all upset about that I don’t know what to say.

For those who suggested Spain as the best country to live in, according to this study it ranks 7th on the list of most stressed European countries to live in. https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/1787463/most-stressful-countries-europe-to-live-in

And if you want great maternity leave conditions, go to Sweden, it can be over a year :D other high scorers on the list: https://vacationtracker.io/blog/countries-with-the-best-maternity-and-paternity-leave/
Still less stressed than the US! And I didn't say it's the best country to live in, just that I personally want to move there.

For some caught off guard by the attitudes of some Canadians on the dis, not all. This is worth watching. It really says a

My comment was of course the thread is about discussing the U.S., it was started on 4th of July.
Well in fairness, Canada was brought into this discussion rather early, in a disparaging way, in your celebration of the 4th of July. Fancy that! Smiling.

And any thread that has misinformation in it, is ripe for replies. No matter the subject at hand.

Prairiegirl was indeed talking about her neighbours locally and beyond in this country. As she was communicating we have a disturbing past &. present. And that can be separated from loving our country as well. But regardless it is gross.

And just for added information - Canada Day is not a huge deal in a lot of our upbringings - as the 4th of July is for you all - when one is from a certain generation here. It was originally called Dominion Day and for some of us that are old enough it was just a Huh? day back then, as a lot of us had the largest celebration and family fun, outside of the meaning of the day, on Victoria Day in May.

I take so long to write, who knows what goodies will pop in while you are actually talking about how Canada infiltrated the 4th of July! 😁🤭😁

If your point is "they started it" I'm not sure that's the impression you want me to have as it sounds like toddlers squabbling. Any thread gets some of the Canadians here on the Boards talking poorly about the U.S. and a few of the posters are well known for this. It doesn't matter the issue, it could be about the most basic thing and it would still occur.

But for the sake of discussion if you see a thread that has America in the title you probably are going to figure out what it's about and if you're knowledgeable enough about specific dates to recognize the date that it was started being on the 4th of July you can also probably figure out what it is going to be about which may have even more topics one does not agree with. My comment about Canada Day is perhaps IDK being deliberately misconstrued (though I'll give the benefit of the doubt here). If I saw a thread that was about Canada Day (which there has been in the past) I know what it's about. I cannot claim ignorance at what the topic is going to be about anymore than someone can claim ignorance about what a thread called America is going to be about, thus, while one can of course join in on the discussion IRL you know what you're getting yourself into.

I do appreciate the history lesson (sincerely said to both of you posters who discussed it) but I was not commenting so Canadians can set the record straight on the modernization of the day but rather that I would be aware of what a thread is going to be about and can avoid it if I know I need to given it was in the title :)

If your point is "they started it
No, not my point at all Mackenzie.
First, I do not even have that quality in me.
I simply find it amusing of all this talk, way beyond you, of blah blah why come on our thread when Canada's problems 😊were already listed in early pages, on a celebration of the 4th of July. Which is highly entertaining. But I am just repeating myself now.

As for the history lesson, I thought it was interesting to note that we do not have the same fanfare, or did not, in our history. Nothing more.

You can explain it away all you wish, but your history and reputation on this subject are well known and well deserved. It must be very stressful to constantly worry about comparing Canada to the U.S. I wish you well with your future well being.

@sam_gordon, what do you think? Can this America thread give your thousand post 'hate' thread from a month or so ago a run for the money? :surfweb: :woohoo:
