Amazon Prime/Kindle questions

I recently purchased my 17yo homeschooler a kindle fire and put it under my account. I am considering getting one for my 23yo as a college graduation present. Would it make more sense for them to both be under the same account, or separate?

Also, I've heard that Prime is cheaper with a college email address. Is it too late to add my DD23's email to our account to purchase Prime at a lesser rate? And if we did that, would all of the receipts go to that account? And what would then happen after she graduates?

Are there benefits to purchasing prime at the full rate as compared to the student rate?

College students get PRIME free for the first year and then 1/2 off every year after that. I would contact amazon and see if you can add your students email address to the PRIME acoount.

The student prime has changed. It used to be one year and it changed only recently to a half year or something like that. I had it a while ago for myelf and was looking into it for my college age son and was suprised at the changes.

You must use an .edu address for prime. They will send a verification link to the .edu address so you just can't put one in there and hope they won't check. If you still have an .edu as an alumni-it may work- I haven't tried it yet! As for the purchases, the student prime is tied to the .edu account so all purchases through there are sent to that email.

You do get prime free for one month as you purchase the Fire. I used it for the month and haven't reactivated it. I bought two things but that was it. We do the bulk of our purchasing the last quarter of the year so it isn't worth it for us to pay for prime.

Does the 23 year really want one? I would think that age is all about Ipad. You can get Ipad2s cheaper now that the new Ipad is out. Check the pricing on that.

The last time I used student prime was 2007-2008 so it was a while ago. To go from then to now, the whole student prime terms have changed.

You know I'm really kind of torn. I want to get my son with autism an ipad. He loves his ipod touch. My DD23 has a Mac laptop so it might be a better choice. She reads a lot, uses the library etc. So many decisions!

We have 4 kindles all registered to the same account, and we do it that way so we can share books.

Technically your DD would be ineligible for student prime as soon as she graduates. But the way the program is set up now, once the account is created she would get the free 6 months and then it would probably auto renew at the student rate for 4 years before reverting to a full price prime membership. (You can turn off the auto renew feature anytime)

Student benefits can't be shared, so yes, everything would have to go through that account.

This might be true during the free period, but not during the half price offer. I have a student account and get access to the free videos. Well worth $40 a year for 2 day shipping and free video streaming. Granted, the video selection is not as good as Netflix, but they just added new videos from The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, The Travel Channel, and The History Channel.

The streaming and lending library is only unavailable during the NON-paid time period. Right now we're on the $40/year student plan (went through our year of free prime) and everything is available. I'm actually watching Amazon prime right now and have a book borrowed on the lending library sitting on my kindle

Having said that, the one thing if you have multiple kindles on the same account (that dh and I run into a lot ) is that you can only borrow ONE kindle book per month per account. Not per kindle. So you'd have to rotate or only have one person using the lending library. Also, if you use multiple kindles on the same account they use the same credit card. You could change up the default card prior to any purchase, but it'd get to be a bit annoying.

We joined the kindle family back when the K2 first came out a few years ago. I've not nothing but great things to say about both the Kindles and Amazon.
