Amazing Race, Family Edition. *Official DiscussionThread*

The thing about the spoiler......if we were talking about the current episode, someone who hasn't seen it should not be on here if they don't want spoilers. We had not been talking about season 2 at all. Aprilgail came on and mentioned that she was watching it right now. Why wouldn't anyone assume that she was watching it for the first time? It's not like she dug up a past thread about season 2 and griped at us for talking about it.

Just a question since you made this comment.

Wouldn't it be "selfish" to do anything but gather all the racers in the area and pray for the safety of everybody invovled. That's certainly the norm in the sports environment that I've been involved with in the past.

Not saying that is what they have to do, but when talking about being "selfish" and what I people think would be the respectful way to handle what they have been doing, the group prayer deal is what comes to mind.

I had been withholding my comment b/c I didn't want to bother with it and the way it sounded.

Now while yes it is selfish--there is nothing wrong with praying a family member not get injured or killed (especially since they just lost the dad).

God doesn't mind selfish prayer b/c sometimes you just gotta pray for you...and in this case--I didn't consider praying that her son doens't drown and her praying she doesn't get harmed in the go kart--to be on the same level of selfishness. Praying to win--to be better than others...blek!

(and this is why I didn't bring it up ;) )

Actually--I think she had mentioned it twice...and in MY post...I had to go and reread her post b/c I almost worded it so that it might have ruined it for her. I did fix it since I was answering her post directly.

In my opinion it would have been more appropriate for them to pray for everyone's safety. That would be the true Christian thing to do.

I agree--but at this point--I was just grasping at straws since some on here think all we do is Weaver bash.

I just felt at that particular moment....that "yes--when you want to be selfish in prayer---that is the kind of prayer you would say".

Had they been praying this way the entire season--"Please don't let harm come to us" "Please keep us safe" "Please don't let mom die, too" (I remember feeling VERY VERY bad for them with the Amish cart when it ran over their mom!--they did use to tug at my heartstrings). Stuff of that nature--I don't think we as a collective group--woudln't have had so much problem with their prayers.

Understood. To be clear, only the prayers to win, or come out ahead of the others (which the Weavers have done), has bothered me.

This last leg was the perfect example. We saw more than one team pray, but we only saw one team claim to be better people because of their religion. Same goes for praying to come out ahead.

The funny thing is that most people forget that DJ Paolo (the eldest son) is 24 years old.
Eck, I thought that he was much younger. Ok, then it's impossible to punish him at all. I wonder why he's so obnoxious? The younger boy didn't seem that way.

I didn't know he was out of the house.

I would guess he was that way--b/c he was well out of the house..and how much trouble could he REALLY get into! :rotfl:

(disclaimer--doesn't make it any more appropriate--was just answering as to why he might be this way at that ripe old age!).

As spoilers go, I don't feel anybody should have to hold back from posting about any past season or completed episode.

We should be able to compare the leaders and winners of this season to other seasons without worrying about people who didn't watch.

Yes, Spoilers can only be for current seasons. Not for re-runs.

You can always start a new thread for the particular re-run season you are watching and put in the title -no spoilers.

Exactly! Who's to know what anyone has or hasn't seen? There was a thread for the reruns on GSN and everyone was careful of spoilers on that thread because it was specific to those reruns. Some episodes have been shown 3 times now. I think discussing that hardly constitutes a spoiler.

When they were on CBS yesterday morning, the guys were talking about the mother. They were saying that although on the show you would see her saying something once and it was usually right, in reality she had said it 50 times before that when she wasn't right. I guess it drives them insane. The mom just sat and smiled at that. Perhaps when the older son was younger, he was more respectful but now that he is an adult, he feels he can speak his mind.

What I found interesting aobut the Paulos was how the dad rarely ever stepped in and corrected the sons. Not sure what to make of that, because there could be different reasons, but one possibility is that he agreed at least some of the time. She was really bad at times.

But as the boys said at the mat, she impressed everybody with what she actually did. The rest is secondary.

I'm sorry, I hate to keep rehashing this. If we were all discussing that season, then someone could steer clear if they didn't want to read about it. But, this person found out that someone was watching a previous season and just told them the winner. There was no reason for even saying that. It wasn't part of the conversation.

First of all my post wasn't nasty at all. I didn't use foul language, and I didn't use any namecalling.

I just don't understand how people can be so oblivious about the real world at times. I'm not ripping those people apart, I'm just rather baffled by that mindset.

Not everyone needs to like the Paolos, we all have our favorites and thats cool. I just don't understand why the hatred seems to be so severe, they seem to be just the typical American family to me. Remember not all families have to be the same.

BTW.... the Paolos aren't bad people. It seems that they got along with all teams (Weavers excluded), and it was awesome when they told the Bransens to put the clothes on.

No, your post wasn't nasty.

And, I am one of those people who does think that some of the Paolos need serious counselling. I do not come from the perfect family, by far. My DF and I argue and bicker at times. I have four other siblings and two of them have several children... so no, it isn't always easy in different families.

The Paolos seem like nice people and no doubt they love each other. I will not dispute that, I believe that the AR taught them many lessons.

At the same time, I would think that they should quit being so abusive to each other... 'cause that is exactly what they are doing!

I am a strong believer that you shouldn't accept behaviour from a family member that you wouldn't accept from a stranger. People seem to let down their guard with their family and don't give them the same respect they would give their boss, neighbour or stranger on the street. And, I would never tolerate that kid's behaviour or the fact that his dad would let him talk that way to his mom... so, I'm glad they're gone

At this point I am finding myself underwhelmed by the remaining families. It has been difficult to find a favorite...it's like trying to determine the best of the worst.

I really don't care who wins, I just want this season over and a new one to start in the old format with exotic locations and more difficult challenges.

Hehe... I can see your point. But to me, I would never think of praying for everyone. Every time we go out for dinner, we pray for our meal but I wouldn't think of praying for everyone else's at the restaurant, I would expect them to do that themself if they want it prayed for. :rotfl: I guess I just don't think that way even though I do come from a very Christian background.

Let's remember, too, that CBS is going to show the footage that is exciting and dramatic. They don't want a boy who follows meekly after his mother. They don't want teams that get along with everyone all the time It would be very boring. The Paolos and the Weavers are must see tv.

We don't really know what they are like at home. They are going to show us the clips that make us slap our heads and go...what was she thinking....

The Paolos seem like a typical Italian NY family. I was surprised by the age of DJ, because I thought he was a typical 19, embarrassed by his mother. Now I think he is immature. But it seems like yelling at each other is their way to communicate, just maybe not a good way.

I don't want the Weaver family to win - because I think they would gloat with 'Christian righteousness'. I don't think I'll be able to stand it.

To me, a Christian means loving your neighbor, regardless. It means turning the other cheek. It means reaching out to others to spread God's love, not to isolate oneself. There's also the saying that God helps those who help themselves.

At the same time, I have two brothers in their 30s... and when I was younger, they were in their 20s and I think that if they ever talked to my mom that way... another family member would plainly knock them out. We just have respect like that ;)

All this reminds me of a sermon my old pastor gave once about how ridiculous it is to pray at a football game for a certain team to win. He got really worked up saying do you think God really cares if the Cowboys or the Packers win??? I'm all for praying for safety or giving thanks, but every time I heard them pray to win or to come in first I thought of that old sermon and laughed. :goodvibes

Good point about the football game.

I've always been taught that in these winning/money/selfish-seeking reasons... you pray for God's will for everyone.

IMO it's accurate to say they were picked to be on the show because they showed in the interviews that they would be "must see TV".

As for what they are showing, I see the editing deal argument being used by the Weaver fans to say they are being picked on. No chance! As they say, you can't make this stuff up.

The Weavers could have been played by CBS in predicting they would be acting this way. The casting of other reality shows liike Survivor clearly show that to be the case. Picking people/teams they know will bring out the worst in each other.

But they don't edit people into total slime, they do that to themselves.
