Am I missing something about Chef Mickey's?

Had our second dinner at Chef Mickeys during out last trip a few weeks ago. I must be missing something, because we can't figure out what all the "hype" is about.

Our first time (last year) our PS was the last of the evening and the characters basically went off duty about 15 minutes after we got there. We saw them briefly. We had the restaurant almost entirely to ourselves, and in fact by dessert we were the only ones left. So I concluded that our dismal time was due to the lateness of the evening and wanted to try it agian at a "normal" time!

I read descriptions of this character meal as "fun", " not to be missed", "do it every year", " must do" etc.... What did I miss????

When we arrived around 5:20 for our 5:30 PS the line JUST TO SIGN IN was way out into the hallway. There were at least 6 CM's standing around, but the line took almost 20 mins. to get checked in. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE to get a name, PS #, check the list and hand out a buzzer???? Especially with that many workers standing around????

The food was okay, nothing special. The "famous" mashed potatos had been whipped to glue like consistancy. The carved ham was dry and chewy. The prime rib had 2 choices, shoe leather, or still moo-ing. The kids did really like the mickyroni and cheese and the ravioli. The parents were not impressed with the grown up food! I did like one of the desserts and wanted to know what it was, but no one there could tell me, and didn't seem interested in going out of thier way to find out for me. The waiter was okay, not great. We often had to wait for drink refills and to get plates cleared away.

Character interaction was definitely not worth the money! My reason for wanting to pay the price for a Character Meal is to have better interaction than is available in the parks. We had a much better time with the characters at Toon Town Fair! Each one just did the "walk up, grab the autograph book, pose for a photo (better make it quick!), move on". I understand that they have to get to everyone and can't spend tons of time, but I paid a lot for that experience (and the food wasn't worth that money!) and thought we could expect a little "fun" while we were there. In fact Goofy was in such a hurry he was being RUDE and made my DD4 cry (I did complain to management and they tried to make it right--but it shouldn't have happened in the first place). Most of the characters came by our table 2 or 3 times. I would have much rather had one long visit rather than several hurried passes.

We didn't experiece any additional "fun". They did the napkin waving thing, but we couldn't really understand why, and all the workers had an "oh brother, time to do this again" attitude. I am sure the charaters were rolling their eyes "in there"! They didn't seem to be "into" it and enjoying the kids.

Was also upset with the rushed decision on buying the photograph. I like that they take your picture and let you buy it, but they came by just as we had got our salads and wanted a decision right then. I told him to leave it and let me think about it (I wanted to eat!). He came back few minutes later. I still hadn't had time to really look at the photo and think about it. And of course they don't bother to tell you that you don't have to buy the whole package. I had to be assertive to get him to tell me the price for just the 5x7 photo. Why can't they just have them in a central place to go and look at before you leave, or have you pay your server or a specific cashier after the meal?

The whole meal just felt "rushed" (except for when we signed in!). Get in, stuff your face, get the *&%$ out. This really ticked me off and caused the opposited reaction for us, we took a VERY long time.

Obviously we won't do this again, but I am just wondering what it is that all you who recommend Chef Mickey's get that we didn't????

PS: We have also done Donald's Breakfastasaurus and CRT and enjoyed them so this wasn't our first or only Character meal. I just can't see what is supposed to be so wonderful about Chef Mickey's????

i understand how you feel. we had breakfast there in august after having read all the hype. while it was good and hot, it is not something i am just eager to return to. if others in the party are wanting to try it then i am "game." otherwise, it is not a must do. sure we will return, but probably not every time. we go to wdw about 3 times a year. BTW, we did not get a photo taken upon arrival and we had to wait just a few minutes. maybe that is why we missed the photo. :teleport: :earboy2:

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the mashed potatoes are "gluey." We've been twice for dinner and while we thought the characters were cute, the food is lacking. We have no children with us so we don't expect the characters to stay for any longer than a hug or a quick picture. Maybe we'll try breakfast next time, it's kinda hard to mess that up.

My family went to Chef Mickey's for dinner 2 years ago. We really enjoyed the whole experience. It must be a hit or miss thing with the characters and food, I'm guessing? We didn't go on a weekend, it was a Tuesday nite. It was around 8 pm, I think? I thought the food was very good, the mashed potatoes were delicious and the pasta was great. Heck, I'm sure I ate a bit of everything offered! The characters came around 2-3 times and didn't rush us. Our waitress wasn't very friendly or helpful but thankfully she was only there for the drinks (which she didn't tell us were included with our meal) and the bill. We would go back and I hope if and when we do we have a great time like before. Maybe we all have different standards or maybe the staff changes all the time?

We went for breakfast a few years ago and weren't that impressed, but last month we went back for dinner - we were in a party of 12 and had a really nice time. We were shown to a large round table by the windows and got a view of Wishes as we were seated, the round table was fabulous, we ate as a 12 at many restaurants on that trip and that was the only big round table we got and it makes a meal much more sociable.
I really enjoyed the food, although some people in our group weren't happy with the beef (they thought the 'well done' wasn't done enough) but generally we enjoyed it.
we did have a problem with the photo, we wanted one of all 12 of us, which they did, but it didn't turn out too well, we bought it anyway, and were able to change the package around to suit our needs.
I would go back but it's not my favorite meal by any means - we would go to the Crystal Palace over Chef Mickeys any day.

We were not big fans of Chef Mickey's either.
We had a better buffet and better character interaction at Crystal Palace. However..... If you want to have some interaction with Mickey and the gang I will say that is probably the place to go. ( However I have not gone to the other Character meals with Mickey and the gang)
we were not thrilled about the food at all. In fact when my husband saw the menu we almost did not go since all of the other buffets we had gone to had much better selections.
We don't have kids so that could be part of it. ( but we do like the Character meals)

We haven't done supper, but faithfully have 1 character breakfast there. We have always had a good time, the food is definatly better that Donald's breakfast (not to mention easier to get to).
I'm not crazy about the napkin waving but put up with it in the spirit of which it is intentioned.

I feel that there are many other buffets for supper that need to be tried and I can only take so much character interaction. I do like to eat at least once at Crystal Palace for dinner, so we usually do CM for Breakfast and CP for supper.

We enjoy the breakfast there, but not the food at dinner. I like GF's 1900 Park Fare, Crystal Palace, CRT, etc. much better.

We much prefer O'hana Breakfast, Dinner at Liberty Tree and lunch at Crystal Palace for character interaction. Also Goofy breakfast buffet at Cape May was excellent.

Nope you're not missing anything. We went a couple times and were disappointed each time. This last time the character interaction was awful and not worth the money we spent. We now go to Crystal Palace, Ohanas and the Cape May breakfast. Much better for your money.

Another no-go for Chef Mickeys. I guess the kids love it, but I did't think it was worth the price.

We went to Chef Mickey's two weeks ago today. We had a great time! I thought the food was actually pretty good, as did my husband, who is very picky. The mashed potatoes were excellent. The chicken was good, and the green beans and the roasted potatoes. I wasn't impressed with the desserts, but the rest of it was more than enought to make us happy. My daughter received a nicely decorated cupcake for her birthday, with a candle for her to blow out.

The character interaction was decent, much better than doing the long lines in the parks, IMHO. We were only visited once by each character, but we thought that was just fine. The visits were spaced out over our whole meal and Mickey came by just as we were finishing up and getting ready to pay. Minnie was in a bit of a rush but we figured maybe she was just in need of a potty break. Donald entertained us while we waited for our table and was very good with Kate. We got a pic with each character and bought the group pic they take after you check in. They dropped off the group pic about halfway through dinner and didn't come back to bug us for a good 15-20 mins, just as we were getting ready to leave.

During the napkin wave I only noticed all of the guests around us twirling their napkins and having a great time. I wasn't really interested in how the servers liked the twirl so I didn't spend much time looking at them. The characters around us all did the twirl just fine. Whether they were rolling their eyes behind their masks I have no idea, but they were smiling on the outside. :earboy2: I don't know, maybe we're just easy to please or simpletons, but we had a great time and we'll be going back again on our next trip. :cool1:

We didn't like the dinner either, had your same issues. We may try the breakfast next time to see if it's any better.

We loved the CP dinner!

Great post--it's what I've been trying to say about teh place for years. It's probably the single most overrated restaurant in all of WDW.

AMEN! Well written.....we must have been there at the same time! You took the words right out of our mouth. We won't be going back.

DH & I really enjoyed Ohana's character breakfast!

The food was okay, nothing special. The "famous" mashed potatos had been whipped to glue like consistancy. The carved ham was dry and chewy. The prime rib had 2 choices, shoe leather, or still moo-ing.

Sounds like our experience. The potaotes were uneatable. A couple of yrs ago someone from the UK said that aparently americans have never had good mashed potatoes if those are considered good. I totally agree. The food, especially the potaotes, was nasty.
I asked for rare roast beef and received burnt to a crisp. DH asked for MW and got mooing so ee switched. However it was cold and tastless as was all the food. I swear the the food was so luke warm that it was a food poisoning experiment.

Well, our experiences haven't been that negative (both b'fast and dinner) but Chef Mix is definitely NOT a "must do". It's always been OK. DD liked the napkin wave thing when she was younger, but at 10 is starting to join the eyeballrollers! She did have a great birthday there...they brought her a cupcake, CM's and Mickey stood around and sang 'Happy Birthday Song', and Minnie took her by the hand for the napkin wave. This was a b'fast, latest PS of the day. Dunno...we enjoy CP more for b'fast. At this point DD is getting old enough that the character thing is waning, except for Mulan (perennial favorite princess, so hard to locate!). Food at Chef Mix is never exciting...probably won't do it again unless we are travelling as a group and someone else wants to go, although it is usually a great way to get most of the classic Disney characters' autographs and photos in the shortest amount of time.

DH and I totally agree with the OP and many others here: dinner at Chef Mickey's was not what we expected. We thought the food was just okay and the interaction, while it delighted our then preschool DD, was hurried. On our most recent trip, we tried it for breakfast and thought it was great - we'd definitely do breakfast again.

I hate Chef Mickey's and am always happy to post my opinion in these threads so that people know what they are in for. With so many outstanding character meal experiences on offer at WDW (especially at MK), I do not understand why this one --terrible, overpriced food, terrible atmo, terrible character interaction, total chaos -- continues to get the crowds!

You don't have to tell me twice, I think Chef Mickey's will not go on my list of things to do. LOL
