I went to a concert last night at House of Blues. Four bands. Normally when they have four bands, the first band goes on at 7:00 and plays until 7:25. The second band goes on at 7:40 and plays until 8:15. The third band goes on at 8:30 and plays until 9:30, and the headliner goes on at 9:50 and plays until 11:00-ish. It's very manageable for people to catch a show and still get home and get a reasonable amount of sleep before school or work the next day.

Well, last night the first band went on after 7:30, and bottom line the headliner was still playing when I left at 11:50--and they didn't seem like they were going to end the set anytime soon. :sad2: By the time I left, I'd say about 50-60% of the people there had left before me.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's really stupid to run a show that late on a weeknight? Especially when they could have started it earlier and shortened a couple of the sets by five minutes in order to end at what is well established as the typical end time of 11:00pm. Or am I just getting old? :rotfl:

You're just getting old. But that's ok, so am I. :lmao: In our area, and where I went to college, places with live bands don't really get going until after 9 or 10 at night...even on weekdays. Actually, in college, there would be nobody in the bars until 10:30 or so.

This is a little different. It's not your typical "bar." They operate more like an arena or theater than a bar.Typically concerts end at HoB by 11:00 pm, which is one of the many reasons I really enjoy catching shows there. It's not like the actual "bars" downtown, where yes the shows run until 1:00 am--or later.

Yes, you're getting old and so am I!! I'm usually in bed by 9:00 and that's PM not AM!

Noooo Anne, Nooooo NOT YOU! You're our last hope of remaining young (at heart) Rockers;)

Yep, getting old - we know the symptoms too.

We knew we were REALLY old when we went to see Robert Earl Keen in NYC (the name of the place escapes me - see - it's that CRS disease). We (at least I) WAS the oldest person in the place and they had no seats. So we had to stand through the whole show. Fortunately I found a place to lean on, but, that was it for us!!

Now, we host concerts in our house. It's folkie type music with people usually over 40. We start the shows at 3 and get those people out by 6. That way they can get home and get their jammies on on time (: :rotfl2:

Oh, I don't mind that part. I never sit, even when I have a seat--I'd rather stand in the back of the place.

I know a local folk musician here in Central Florida who does a lot of house concerts. It's an interesting and very growing concept around here. Small independent coffee houses with a singer/guitarist or duo are also getting really popular in this area. I went to a show at one a few weeks ago that was two guys who were formerly in major label bands that used to play huge arenas, it was really neat seeing them in such an intimate setting where most of the people had no idea of their backgrounds. :thumbsup2

I remembered - it was Irving Plaza!

(just an aside - my daughter has a rescued greyhound - my "granddog" - Murphy. Greyhounds are such sweethearts!!)

Yup....old. It's pretty normal for bands to play past midnight anywhere I've lived and it doesn't matter what the venue unless you're in a concert hall. Like someone else said, most people don't even show up until after 9.

Not older......you are getting wiser. ;)

Staying out til 2am listening to live music and then getting up for work at 5:30am will give you such a head-ache (Oy gevalt)!

Of course, the last concert I personally attended involved Disney & some sort of interpretive ice dance theme done to Monsters Inc......it was dreadful and the storyline was incomprehensible to all who attended. Luckily, I found a concession stand that served "adult" beverages. Happily, we were done and home by 9:00pm.

Never again.

Symphonies and Operas seem to keep sensible hours......except for those drunk lecherous Euphonists of course (joke, just a joke- ex-trombonist here.....we have a history)

Oh trust me, don't give up hope yet. :lmao: Sunday I've got a great show to go to: Social Ghost, Operator, Fiction Plane, Skindred, Drowning Pool, Nonpoint, Finger 11, Seether, and Breaking Benjamin. The good news? it ends at 10:00 pm! :lmao:

Can't wait to see the dust cloud coming up out of that pit. Woot!

This place is a concert hall. Shows normally begin at 7:00 and end at 11:00.

If you ever go to Irving Plaza again, there are some seats scattered around upstairs, but the sound isn't so good up there.

OK Anne, have a good time at that show. BTW, seems like 11pm is about normal for arena shows to end. I always heard it had something to do with the union for stagehands that would get big OT bucks if they had to stay too late.:) I guess I wouldn't know what to expect at HOB.
