Am I getting this?

Bumbershoot, what are the referral bonuses?

Arthur06, we really are set on BLT. The only other resort I would consider would be AKV. If we can get a smaller contract there, we might consider it.

The big issue here is that we would all have to be on the deed jointly and share one pooled amount of points even if we have multiple small blocks of points.

Illuminations_Rocks, we have considered that and it is possible that we just wait and shop for individual smaller blocks at BLT via resale or wait for it to become available for sale from Disney as smaller contracts as well.

I am not really sure what you mean by this? Why do you HAVE to be on the deed jointly? I guess I am becoming totally confused :confused3

Sorry!

We do not have to own jointly.

I meant if each family can get smaller contracts individually, we might consider AKV.

The more I think about it though, I would rather wait a year or two and pick up a BLT resale with a lesser amount of points. 100 to 120 would work for my family of 4 at this time. Visiting WDW every other year is good for us!

"Jointly" is not going to work for me the way I want it to.

Does that clarify?

I would not buy and keep them jointly for the risks involved. Family partnerships are a disaster looking to happen financially and emotionally. IMO, the best option is for one group to buy (possibly with mom and dad) and the rest have an agreed upon rental arrangement going forward. Maybe they paid a smaller % of the purchase or a higher than maint fee rental (but not retail) for what they use. That does create the issue that not all are truly members and get the discount but it avoids a really large set of risks. Alternative 2 would be to Have a smaller group (again ? parents plus one one family for each), do the add ons then spin them off on your own. Certainly much cheaper to do the deeds yourself and record them than all buying separately either through DVC or resale. That does create as many as 4 (more likely 3) contracts and it makes transferring more difficult. If you could get down to 2 contracts total, transferring is a breeze. If you have separate contracts, considering having them as all one home resort in a given contract, that too will minimize transfers.

On your initial plan, parents can't buy then add on with different names unless you do a new master anyway. DVC was selling some contracts for a 100 minimum to new buyers so you may want to look at that for this situation. Still more expensive than buying together, adding on, spinning them off and changing 3 or 4 deeds, but not as much so as even buying 3 contracts directly. One last point about this is that I am aware of DVC selling "add ons" with different titled names to existing members as long as they were buying the minimum amount for a new contract. If so, that would save you the $200 total cost of the spin off deeds and maybe $450-600 off 3 new purchases along with the hassle and it would have you end up with separate contracts if you so chose to go that route. I do know of one or 2 instance along this lines where they sold smaller add ons TOTALING the min new contract amount but new add ons were all titled the same as each other.

If your parents were members and referred you, they would get a small incentive for doing so. For each referral within a year, the amount is increased.

Since it seems that everyone wants BLT, why don't two of the three of you buy in direct from Disney at 180 points each and have the contracts done as 120 and 60.

Then, once you buy, both of you turn around and sell the 60 point contract to the other sibling. It would have to go through ROFR, but as long as they offer your around the same price as Disney is offering, I would be surprised if Disney bought it back

The only additional cost doing in this way would be getting someone to handle the transfer but I have heard that some of the resale companies will do it for around $500.00, if someone already has their own buyer.

But it would allow you all to get in to BLT with less than 160 and each have your own contracts to work with. Then your Mom and Dad can buy what they need resale.

Good luck!

Doing it this way, everyone ends up with 120

I assumed that if 160 points was the minimum amount for the initial contract that it had to be a 160+ point contract. You are saying that a buyer could buy/become a member, directly through Disney when buying 2 or more smaller contracts as long as they total 160+ points.

I think this is the best idea so far.

120 + 120
120 + 60

Then we have to transfer titles:

parent 60
sibling 120
sibling 120
sibling 120

This way, everyone has their own points, with their own contract and we do not have to keep track of who does what when. I do not anticipate trading between the groups, so that should be a non-issue.

Thanks again for all of the info!!!

There is no guarantee that Disney will do this, but they have. Many times a guide will have to ask a supervisor, but call and ask!

The posters here have made great points about why coordinating a purchase with family members is probably not a good idea.

That said, however, my family did buy a membership together in 1996, and it is still working well for us. There are 4 parties (my parents, myself, and my two siblings). We purchased 220 points total, which was enough for each family to use 55 per year (or to borrow/bank in other ways). At that point we could do 5 weeknights in an OKW studio during Magic season. We are all on the deed, and so all have full member benefits. We have used the points in all sorts of ways, including combining them for a Grand Villa once.

Since joining, my brother, sister and I have each added on 55 additional points. These appear as add-ons to the original contract. (We all had to sign for each add-on.)

Communication is essential, as all rules concerning banking/borrowing, etc. must be followed as a group. We end up doing a lot of banking and borrowing just within the membership (if someone wants to skip a year, another family often ends up using those points). I have become the keeper of the points, so that no one does anything without consulting me so that it all makes sense within our own membership and with the club rules. Confusing at times, but so far, so good. We also must coordinate dues payments so that all pay their fair share.

So, I probably would not recommend this as a way to purchase, because I can imagine how it could go very wrong, but I wanted to let you know that such arrangements do exist. For us it was a way to cut the costs of Disney vacations, and to be able to stay in nicer rooms.

Good luck with your planning and purchase(s). I hope your family will enjoy their membership(s) as much as mine has done.
