Am I crazy? (dogs)

A gentleman in our NY office (I'm in Boston) sent around and email to the entire company (worldwide) asking if anyone wants a dog his friend took in yesterday.

The dog is adorable. She is already fixed, has shots etc. Age unknown, breed unknown (but definately half Jack Russell) , sweet temperment. Saw a picture and she is adorable and small weighs 20 lbs.

She is currently in NY. Normally I  when the NY office people assume they are the ONLY people in our company and send emails to everyone. But this time, I am seriously considering driving to NY to check out this dog.

She is just the cutest thing (next to Monty Dog) I have ever seen. She looks exactly like Monty dog except for her coloring which was hard to tell in the photo.

I have a few concerns, all of which I have addressed to the person foster caring for the dog now.

1. She MAY be part "pit bull". If so, Boston has passed ridiculous legislation making anyone with a dog that is even a small part pit bull to wear a muzzle in public. I will not do that to a dog I deem to be friendly and controllable on a leash. Therefore, if I even have reason to think Daisy is part pitbull , I will not take her, because I think her quality of life here would be pretty lousy, when we walk in the city and she is muzzled, and the Monty Dog is not.

2. Daily costs, and vet care are not too much or too hard for us to handle. But what I am worried about, and Chris is worried about too, is that when we go on vacations now, we will have to pay several hundred more per trip to kennel two dogs instead of just the one.

3. What if Monty & Daisy get a long great when they meet in NY, but get home to hate each other? Then what do I do?

Daisy is a beautiful dog and we would love to give her a second chance at a home and a family. I am waiting to find out more specifics on where and why she was ditched by her last owner.

What do you think? Am I nuts?

I don't think you are crazy. But I do think you are asking all the right questions. It would be a big added expense to have another dog, but Monty Dog may love to have a playmate! You never know. Good luck and let us know how it works out!

I don't think you are crazy at all. If you can afford it and can love it then I say go for it. The dogs will learn to get along.

How much of an added costs do you think it will be?

We can handle doubled vet bills, and double food bills etc. The only concern we have is double kennel bills when we go on vacation :(

I don't think you are crazy at all. I had a friend just a few months ago who drove to North Carolina to look at a dog she was thinking of adopting.

I think you take the precautions, determine if she MAY be part pit bull, and see how Monty Dog likes the little dog. I would think if they like each other when they meet, they should get along. You are right to be concerned, however, since dogs can change when they are in their home environment.

If you are really interested, go ahead and take a trip to see the dog - couldn't hurt if you are seriously considering it!

I was reading your thread about Pit Bulls before and you (and I agree to a certain extent) said that the dog's tempermant is determined on how they were raised. Since you do not (do you?) know this dogs owner and haven't seen how it was raised, I would be very careful about this adoption. They may say the dog was raised well, but you can never really know.. and with that breed of dog, it is very important to know..

The only way that I would even consider having a dog that is potentially dangerous is to have raised it myself from a pup.....

JMO, of course...

A Jack Russell breeding with a Pit Bull. That's one determined little doggie!!!

as far as the pit bull concern - my dog is part pit bull and she is an angel. Matter of fact she has a better temperment than my pom. How they can even determine if a dog is part pit by looking at it is beyond me. I've seen alot of dogs labled as pits that are in no way close. I think people see a muscular dog and just assume. As for the kennel - I would call and ask how much extra it is for two dogs. My kennel only charges an additional $5. for an extra dog. You might find that the dog is already adopted by now - I'm sure if you are considering another dog you can find many available in your area. Try petfinder - it's a great place for information too.:wave2:

Oh - I love pitbull mixes (and purepreds). But there is now a ridiculous law in Boston that any dog that it is a small part pitbull has to be muzzled in public. So this pup could be 95% something else, and 5% pitbull and she'd still legally have to be muzzled.

I could not bring myself to do that to a dog.

Can't help you with any of your questions, except to suggest that as far as kenneling 2 dogs, what about a petsitter that would come to stay at your home while you are away? I hired a college girl (friend's daughter) to stay while we went to WDW last year for 11 days ($200) and again when we went to Hershey last week ($60) for 5 days. She stayed here with the dog and cats (and bunny) and only had to care for them. I didn't expect any housecleaning or anything.
Just a suggestion. Maybe you or your boyfriend have a younger brother or sister or neice or nephew who might like to earn some extra cash while you are away. And as an added bonus, the house wouldn't be empty. Best of luck, and I think it is terrific that you are considering an adoption of a new furbaby, and are thinking of the right questions to ask!
