Alternative to white bread favorites?

I think I heard on Dr Oz that you should look for whole wheat bread that says 100% Whole Wheat on the label not just "whole wheat"
 
I also want to point out that certain oatmeals are not as healthy as advertised. The One Minute cooking and the instant oatmeals are cut too fine, to make them quicker cooking. The necessary germ/kernel (whatever it's called,) has been cut off because of this.

The 5 Minute cooking oatmeal or longer are the healthier oatmeal. IIRC, the steel cut, Irish oatmeal is of the best.

No, again, it depends on how it's processed. It can be 100% Whole Wheat and pulverized too much, that the body digests it exactly the same as white flour. As Bilberry said, it will spike and elevate blood sugar too much.

There is also very little fiber left to have any real health benefits. Fiber slows digestion. That's why eat a whole piece of fruit, which are also incredibly high in natural sugar, is better than drinking juice, in which the fiber has been removed.


Look for 100% "stone ground" whole wheat. I guess that's like the old days when they used mortars & pestles to ground the wheat. It doesn't destroy the wheat germ & bran.
 

We like Healthy Life whole wheat bread. It is still soft and has a good taste. My kids will eat it too.
 
I check for fiber grams and the absence of HFCS as a sweetner.
 
We like Country Kitchen's 12-Grain Bread.

How this came about was, the kids had always eaten white bread--always. DH and I wanted to go healthier, so I bought the 12-grain for us. well, the kids tried it and liked it better than white, so now I have to just get the 12-grain. It's pricier, to be sure, but it's healthier, and fills you up better. I just thought it was so funny--we made no attempt to gradually wean the kids or anything, even the 4yo prefers the 12grain.

So, it might be easier than you think. I wouldn't call us a particularly healthy-eating family.

I use the 12-grain for everything, except if I make my own bread.
