Also on Board the Magic...taking questions

Hey Disney Darwin,

Can you find out from your tablemates if a person who is deathly afraid of heights should do the canopy tour? I know my teenage DDs would love it and my husband but I don't want to chicken out and ruin it for everyone. Please let us know if you have a chance.

Thx a million for all the updates! :earsboy:

Mexicocruiser... be sure to check for Palo and the PV excursion when you get on board. I believe that CarolAnnC said that they are limiting precruise reservations to 50% or something like that so folks that don't know about reserving ahead of time still have a chance.

I agree that you should be able to get your ressies on board. Palo was sold out, but I got one easily. At the resort, we didn't have a wristband or anything, although some of the guests did. Go figure. Might have been for food and beverage services, I can't say.

Regarding the canopy tour, funny you should mention being afraid of heights. My tablemates told a story about a lady who went and completely freaked out and two of the guides had to go out and get her. Kicking, screaming, crying, etc. They warn you and warn you not to try it if you are afraid of heights, but they say this happens. My tablemates say it IS high.

My wife took the bridge tour yesterday and heard an interesting story from the tour guide. Apparently the ship has three or four anchors and one of them staid in Cabo last week! They couldn't get it raised and had to leave it! We're all scratching our heads over how they cut it loose, and how much it cost.

Today we were in Mazatlan. DD and I took a horseback ride on Stone Island through Shoretrips. To get there, we took a van from the cruise terminal, then a skiff across the bay, then a quick truck ride to the horses. We reversed all that coming home. Only DD and I and one mom and her daughter, also from the Magic. Texans, like us, only from McAllen. My DD12 and her DD9 got along famously. We rode the horses through the coconut groves and along the beach for two hours. Then we stopped at a restaurant and had fried shrimp for lunch and a few cervezas. We took a couple of banana boat rides and body surfed for a couple of hours. Not a jellyfish in sight! However, the waiter told us that just yesterday the waters were loaded with them and you simply couldn't go in. Apparently it's quite hit or miss, and we got lucky.

My wife and tablemates went on the city tour. Saw a church, a few sights, far too many vendors, cliff divers and a folkshore show. They all thought it was boring and regretted their choice of excursions. The cliff diving and the show were lame -- again, their words, I didn't go, but they were pretty adamant. 6 opinions in total, all thumbs down.

We did some shopping at the cruise terminal when we got back. Bought a few trinkets. That's about all they've got is trinkets, very little nice stuff.

The Carnival Pride was also in port today. It's a pretty ship with a seemingly endless supply of outside cabins. I actually toyed with booking it, until we took a Carnival cruise last Thanksgiving that just convinced me that I'm happier with Disney. Which is a nice segue to....

Twice Charmed. We saw the new show tonight. It broke down about 1/3 of the way through for 25 minutes. They quickly trotted some crew out for a Q&A session, and Terk came out to mingle and dance. Everyone took it in stride and they got the show back on line. The show was simply grand and worth the price of our cruise. The sets and costumes are great, there are wonderful new songs, and the blending of animation with live action is unprecedented. It rivals Dreams and is simply fabulous. If you're cruising soon, you've got something (else) wonderful to look forward to.

We ate at AP tonight and they had their show. Our tablemates had not seen it before and it was fun watching them see all the pictures and colors for the first time. My least favorite menu, but I'm not exactly starving to death.

Saw a ventriloquist/comedian, Mike Harrison (I think) tonight. Nice act, quite funny. One lady was losing it (laughing) on the front row which just snowballed and had the whole audience rolling.

Cabo tomorrow, and we've got to tender to get ashore. I hate tenders, mainly because I hate standing in line waiting for them. We'll see how it goes; DCL usually does a pretty good job. I'm not on a DCL shore excursion, so I worry about getting second-hand treatment and how long it might take to get off. We shall see. Still, Cabo is a great town and we look forward to the day. DD and I are taking the Santa Maria sail and snorkel cruise. DW has arranged another birding trip.

Great weather today. Started out overcast, but quickly burned off, and got downright hot! Which is fine for playing in the water.

Going to bed. More tomorrow.

Thanks for the post with great info! I'm looking forward to hearing how the tendering goes.

DisneyDarwin - thanks for the update. I at one time considered doing the Canopy Tour but then realized with my fear of heights, it probably wouldn't be a good idea.

I heard that the Carnival Pride changed schedules for the summer and now will be in Mazatlan with the Magic every Wednesday. I think this was the first week.

We saw Michael Harrison on our last cruise. He was our favorite of the performers that week. Wouldn't mind seeing him again.

One month from today we get on the Magic! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Actually the anchor issue happened on our Panama Cruise. I realized after about the 4th time passing the rock formation that we were spinning in a circle. I checked with an officer on board and then found out they could not get the anchor up. The Captain made an announcement shortly after that we would stay in Cabo a couple extra hours to try and get the anchor back on deck. Ultimately is appears that they "sunk" the anchor. He then put on the power and we were flying to make up the extra time lost in Cabo.

I just wanted to say thanks and it looks like a fellow diser without me knowing has gotten the coloringbook for me. It sound like your having a great time and it's sure making me wish my cruise was sooner than Dec.'06.

What Captain Thord said at the Q & A the following day (after the Cabo anchor incident) was that they started to pull up the anchor at about 2:30 p.m. (an hour earlier than normal) and after the anchor came up out of the water, it got stuck and the machine seized up and would not bring the anchor the rest of the way in. This seemed to be true since a couple of passengers said when they were tendering back to the ship about 3 p.m. the anchor was floating in the air above the water.

Captain Thord said that they had to manually bring in the anchor. They did not cut it off and it did not go into the ocean. They were able to bring the anchor in. That's why he announced that we would not depart Cabo until 6 p.m. because that was the estimated time it was going to take to bring in the anchor.

I agree-after going in circles 4 times, I felt like I was on a slow motion version of the tea cups!

The Captain said they would be fixing the problem once we hit port in LA on that Saturday, so I am guessing it got fixed.

Thanks so much for the almost minute-by-minute report! I just joined this forum yesterday after lurking for a couple of days, and am finding SO much useful info here! We sail this Sat., 6/11. It is our first Disney cruise, second cruise ever (NCL to Alaska in 2000). The DH (50) and DS (7) are getting excited. I'm excited, too, but stressing out!! We are flying down from Northern CA to LAX tomorrow (Fri.) and staying overnight in San Pedro and plan to arrive at the port early Sat. just to be there and get on the ship as soon as we can. If we have to wait, so be it; at least we will finally be near the beginning of a long-awaited vacation (over 1 yr. in planning). I'll try to check in again to this thread before we leave, but I've got to finish packing!!

Keep up the good work, fellow DIS-cussers!!

Sherie :earsgirl:

Thx again DD! I guess I'll have to cancel the canopy tour. I am a real chicken. You're reports are great! Keep having fun!! :teeth:

I'm wondering how the sea's have been and if people are needing to take any meds for sea sickness. I have read that the trip back to LA has been kind of rough.
Thanks
Jill

that is sad that Que will not be there. Does anyone know what he'll be doing?

yeah if anyone knows what Que is doing say so I'm just wondering.

I'm going to South Africa June 20th ::MinnieMo ::MinnieMo :wizard: princess: :cloud9: :mickeybar :Pinkbounc

I thought they stopped doing bridge tours after 9/11. How does one go about signing up for a bridge tour?

Hi guys I had no idea you were over here too. I wish you could have been par tof our DIS group we needed more people. I will come say Hi

Judy

I woke up a bit before 7am, and went up to Topsiders and loaded a tray of food for DW and DD and took it back to the stateroom. We ate and got down to the Buena Vista theater at 7:30am, which is when they start giving out tender tickets to go ashore. If you aren't on a DCL tour, you gotta go get a ticket and go when your number is called. There weren't many of us at 7:30am, so we all went off on the first tender together.

Got to shore a bit before 8am. I thought the ride was smooth and uneventful, but I don't think I'm a good judge. I seem to be immune to rough seas. Several folks aboard have commented that they feel the seas more than they have on east coast trips. Seems like I've seen a bit more patches and wristbands this trip. However, I don't think the seas have even approached moderate...I've had a night or two in the past where things were really tossing, and we've had nothing like that yet. The weather has been generally warm and nice. Today was fabulously sunny; not a cloud in sight, Mr. Blue Sky was talking to us (love that song!).

Anyway, DW had to hook up with her guide for a bird trip, and I needed cash for parasailing, so we headed out early. We didn't bring any checks and I was surprised guest services would not give us an advance on our ship account. About two blocks into town we found an HSVC (whatever that stands for) ATM that dispenses dollars. Then we walked back to the dock because that's where all the vendors were. There were lots of them, but I found them far less pushy than elsewhere. They offered snorkeling, parasailing, jet skis, fishing, you name it. DD and I headed out for some parasailing. We did a tandem run. I tipped the boat guys $20 in advance and they left us up there forever. Drove around the island and gave us the royal tour when we got down. There's a sea lion colony near the great arch. Beautiful scenery. Then I sent DD up by herself (no, she's not spoiled). We had an 11am snorkel/sail cruise set up with Shoretrips, but we still had time to kill, so I rented a jet ski for a half hour. We had a great time wave running, and wake hopping. I circled the Magic! At a respectful distance, the rental dude said that if you got too close to the ship that the WOULD arrest yout. We also went back and took another look at the sea lions.

We got done jet skiing and the water taxi took us back to the dock. We got there just minutes before our sailing cruise took off. Oops, left our flip flops back on the beach. We asked if they could bring them back and we'd pick them up later. DD got hers, but I didn't get mine, so I had to hot foot it back to the ship at the end of the day. Actually, the white tiles stay pretty cool, so I didn't suffer too bad. I'm gonna miss those $5 Walmart flip flops; they had been very good to me.

Our snorkel cruise was to Santa Maria island. It took about an hour to get there. Very pretty scenery along the way. We saw a few sea lions and one menke (sp?) whale. We snorkeled and played in the water for about 90 minutes. Plenty of fish to see. I've seen better in Hawaii and Cayman, but this wasn't bad. We did see the biggest single school we've every seen...literally thousands in one school. We went out against the wind by motor, and came back via sail. The boat was a catamaran so the sail back was spirited and fun. A bit bouncy with the odd wave breaking over the front. The kids on board laid out front on the webbing and got sprayed. They served fresh ceviche, salsa and guacamole that was all dynamite. Plus, sodas, water and beer. Add good tunes and we had a pleasant ride back. As they neared the harbor, they cruised the island shoreline very closely, so we could get some really good pics of the shoreline, arch, and rock formations. All in all, a very nice cruise. As I said, this excursion was with Shoretrips, but the operator was actually Pez Gato. There were plenty of ships making this run, so there are lots of other operators to choose from too.

We got back ashore at 3:15 and the last tender was 3:30pm. DW was getting nervous, but I knew they wouldn't get everyone aboard till well after 4pm. We waited less that 5 minutes to catch a tender and had an uneventful ride back to the ship. I recall standing in the line from hell for a tender at GC, and there was none of that today. Things might have gotten bad at other times, but they were running LOTS of tenders. I know, because we saw them going back and forth while we were on the waverunner. They have nice big wakes to jump!

So, back aboard we showered and changed and caught the 4:30pm Disney Dreams show. Still awesome. The young lady singing the Circle of Life was outstanding --- that's my favorite part. Still a fantastic show. With Twice Charmed and Golden Mickeys, DCL is kickin' butt with their shows. I wish they'd dump some of the variety stuff and add Herc too, we still like that one.

DD and I watched A Lot Like Love in the theater at 6pm, then the whole family caught the juggler act in Rockin R at 7:45. Lots of fun.

We had dinner in PC, complete with Chocolate Lava Cake which gives the Palo Souffle a run for its money. I recommend it with a cold glass of milk.

At 10pm they had singing and dancing in the Atrium for a big party atmosphere, then dropped a ton of balloons. I was too tired to be very festive, but DD did good for the both of us. DW had already retired.

The husband of the lady we rode horses with yesterday went fishing at Mazatlan and again today at Cabo. He landed 3 big ones in Mazatlan, and I don't know how he did today. I'll catch up with him tomorrow and get details for those fishermen out there.

Our tablemates took no tour today, they just caught a water taxi to the main beach. I don't know it's name, but there's one very long stretch of beach with watertoys galour. They had a fabulous day playing in the water and parasailing.

By the way, the water is a good 10 degrees cooler in Cabo. It was cool when you first got in, but it was such a hot day that it was refreshing. We were never cold. However, if you ever caught a windy cloudy day, you might easily get cold, so be prepared. Today, however, it was HOT, so the water was grand, grand, grand. And, so clear and pretty. Visibility down to 30 feet or more easily.

So, I think I'm out of news for now. Melinda, glad you got your coloring books. I learned that they only have generic books, not a "cruise" coloring book, but was prepared to purchase for you...and still can if you want more. We get an hour back on the clock tonight so we get to sleep in AND have a sea day tomorrow...you gotta love that. That's 4 time changes. We only got messed up once when I woke up and thought we were late, but it was just me.

I'm gonna take a stroll around deck 10 and turn in. Send questions if you got 'em. See ya tomorrow.

Hey, I forgot to mention that I've read a lot about people being sick aboard, but have yet to run into anyone who is sick. I was on the last ship in Florida a couple of years ago before they cancelled a week to take the ship out of service and sanitize it and whatever may be going on is nowhere close to that. I think I recall hearing over 300 were sick on that. Yours truly took ill on the last day. It's a good way to get comped for a future cruise, but the price is pretty steep and I don't recommend it! Anyway, I know from my reading that there are some sick folks aboard and I don't mean to make light of their situation. I had it once, and it sucks. But, I just haven't seen or heard anything at all about it on board, and we're not exactly introverts. They ARE pushing the purell at every eating venue, which I think is great. And, at most of the buffets the CMs handle the food, not the guests. I just assumed that had become a standard practice. So, knock on wood -- I hope not to get sick. If I do, I probably deserve it from eating that fresh ceviche and salsa, but so far so good. And it was yummy!

How do you file a claim if you get sick on your cruise?

They started doing them again....it will be posted in the Navigator when and when and where to sign up....I believe it is held on some port days....and I also believe the sign up is at Guest Service desk. I am sure someone will correct me if I am mistaken. After 13 DCL cruises I still have not done the Bridge Tour or the Wine Tasting...two of my goals for the August repo!!!
