ALOHA! The Polynesian Resort Information Thread: October 2013

The first time I went to WDW was in 1975. I was very young and there are only a few things I remember about that trip. It was blistering hot, people were everywhere, there was a huge tree that the Robinson family lived in, a neat space ride called the monorail and a beautiful place to stay called....The Polynesian Village. I distinctly remember seeing it out of my monorail window, and listening to the man over the speaker talk about this exotic paradise. Turning to my cousin, the words whispered from both our mouths were....."ooohhh, aaahhh, polynesian".

That was a long time ago and my cousin has since passed away. I have made several trips back to the world with my own children staying off property and on at CR, ASM, and CSR. Most recently, CSR last month. We make it a tradition each time we go to have dinner at 'Ohana, and the Poly still wows me to this day. However, I could never seem to make staying at the Poly work out, until now. This afternoon, I booked a package for The Polynesian Village for December, 2015. I know it's a long time away, but I've been waiting almost my whole life and I can wait a bit more. I'm so excited and looking forward to surprising my DD15 who loves it just as much as I do.

Here's to The Polynesian Village and all the people who love it!

thank you so much for sharing this touching story with us. I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin, but so GLAD you have so many happy memories. My first trip to WDW was in 1976, and my parents claim we did the Luau but I have no memory of it.

We stayed at the Polynesian in 1989 and I just took my own family there in June. It's a special place for us!

What a sweet story, thanks for sharing . I think it's a great tradition to eat at Ohana every trip. I'm glad you are able to get back to the Poly next year. I know you will have a great time and I'm sure your DD is going to love the surprise .

I am so excited for you and know exactly where you are coming from. My grandpa and I visited when I was young. We didn't stay, but I was wowed by the monorail, the waterfall, the birds, the beach, and the volcano. Two years ago we took our first trip as parents, and we were fortunate enough to get stay at the Polynesian. It was a dream come true. Next year will be great, because the construction will be done and the resort will be renewed with a beautiful new pool and a dedicated Dole Whip shack. I hope your vacation is everything that you dreamed of. If you drink, be sure to get a Lapu Lapu

We just ate at 'Ohana at the beginning of August and we thought it was great!

Agreed. I generally think that most of the food at Disneyworld is fair to poor, but I was very happy with our meal at Ohana. The food quality was very good.

With that in mind...I have been reading not so great reviews about O'Hana for dinner....and I am now considering changing our ressie from there to Kona which we already know that we enjoy....

Love some feedback from anyone who has had any recent dinner experience there???

We ate at 'Ohana last night for the very first time. The food was delicious, our servers were excellent and we did not feel rushed at all.

Ok, now I really think my heart is at Poly! I figured we would try one night at an Epcot Resort since we were spending the day before our cruise at Epcot. We tried YC and we were really pleased with it, also the walk into Epcot is awesome!!! BUT, I found myself missing the Poly!!!

I agree, the Epcot resorts are great if Epcot is your main focus as you can't beat being within walking distance, but I'm also in agreement that the Poly is just amazing. We like trying different resorts and while we have only stayed at the Poly once, that was enough for us to fall in love with it and I have found myself missing the Poly when we stay at other resorts.

Yes, I agree. My DH thinks I am crazy because I booked BWI for my F&W trip this October. WE stayed at BC last time, and he hated it, and has stated that on his next trip, if we are not on the monorail he is not going. I cannot make him understand that the Poly under construction is not going to be fun. Oh well, by the time he is ready to return ( I go about two or three time for his one) hopefully the Poly will be done, and we can enjoy it once again!

From the responses, you peeps understand how memories can make a building so special. Looking forward to reading the whole thread and trip reports. I'm especially looking forward to some pics post construction! Kinda sad about the removal of the waterfall and plants, but I have faith Disney will impress with the new. This board has been invaluable for gathering info for previous trips. So far, we are booked for a standard room and I requested Samoa, famous room 3602.

Polynesian Resort opens new Dole Whip location

Pineapple Lanai, the new home to the Polynesian Resort's Dole Whip machine, opened today, August 30. Previously guests could utilize the self-serve Dole Whip machine at Captain Cook's quick service restaurant to make their own mile-high creations; the new location is no longer self-serve. The new stand has taken over some of the real estate formerly occupied by the Wyland Gallery and a wall has been removed to create a covered seating area near the pool, offering six tables and seating for 24 guests. The Dole Whips are available as single flavor soft serve, swirl or a float; pineapple and vanilla are available. Souvenir Tiki Bowls and Sippers are available as well.

What is this famous room 3602 you speak of?

Maybe not famous, popular is more like it. It's one of the standard rooms, but it has a nice view of the lagoon. I've seen pics of this view from several sources and it is lovely! At the beginning of this thread, scroll through to Samoa and a you can see a pic.

For the record, we got Tuvalu room 2404 in June and loved it. No balcony, but a view of the grounds and partial view of the beach. Could hear the luau faintly but it did not bother us.
