ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Winter 2011 Edition

Well he almost caved on the Polynesian, but after much discussion, we agreed to spend less and stay at BWI. Our kids need to broaden their horizons :rotfl2: and we truly do spend most of our time at EPCOT.

I'm kinda' bummed, but for $1,000 less it makes more sense since Ron and I will be headed back in October AND we had not planned to take the kids this year anyway.

Counting my blessings that I now have a trip to look forward to (even if it isn't at my first choice hotel) that is a bit closer. :dance3:

Awww. But it's another trip! :thumbsup2 That's definitely worth getting excited about. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion of BWI.

Do the showers at the pool have shampoo/soap?
no soap

I read that the 2nd floors don't have balcony's..Has anyone had a room like that? Are you able to pull the chair up and make your own "balcony?" It's not a deal breaker since we're paying for Garden View but just more curious.

there is sliding patio doors but it stops abruptly. you could pull you room chair to the doors but it is mostly for you to stand due to the wooden railing that would block your view sitting. We have stayed in balcony and non balcony rooms at the Poly CL and neither seemed to bother us.:thumbsup2

Thanks!!

I'm trying to decide if I should bring along a pack and play for the baby to sleep in (we're driving) or not. Does anyone know what type of crib they provide? Is there a fee?

Ron and I have stayed at BWI before and the room was great. The thing I don't like about BWI is the location of the rooms from the pool areas. None are convenient to the themed pool and some are not even very convenient to the quiet pool either. I also didn't care for the long, meandering hallways (kind of a pet peeve about YC & BC too). The location is the draw for us this trip.

According to WDW Magic, the Polynesian quiet pool will reopen on May 1:

"The reopening date for Disney's Polynesian Resort quiet pool refurbishment to be completed has been slipping back, but is now expected to be completed on April 30 2011, with a reopening on May 1 2011. The main resort feature pool remains open during the work."

So l hope they are right this time...

Perhaps this has already been discussed, but is anyone else concerned that the new cabanas and roped off areas are going to make the volcano pool area even more crowded? :sad2:

How could it not, they have taken away a good four tables between the two areas and additional loungers that used to inhabit the upper landing. I'm sure they didn't add any additional tables and chairs to take the place of those lost. :confused3

Please, please, please let this be true! We are arriving on May 19Th

I see you are going soon. Have a wonderful, magical time. :tinker:

This is a wonderful thread, very helpful and informative! I've never stayed at Poly but have wanted to ever since I was a little girl. It has always been my favorite resort. When I was a kid, we usually stayed at FW and when CBR opened, we stayed there. Then when I became a parent, the All-Star resorts have been fitting our needs (and budget!) better. But, we've decided to splurge and plan a "big" trip in 2013 and stay at Poly for my 40th b-day.:yay: So, it means we need to start saving now!

It'll be DH, DD, DS, and myself. Kids will be 9 and 6 in summer 2013. Unfortunately, club level and the suites are not realistic for us for a long trip, so standard it is! Are the standard rooms big enough for a family of 4 without feeling cramped and crowded? And I also read that microwaves are available upon request, do they cost extra and are those requests usually granted? One of the ways we'll be able to afford this trip is by making some cuts and dining is one of them. We don't go to WDW for the food, we go for everything else, so eating in the room is not a problem, but having a microwave will help a lot.

Thanks again for all the great info shared here!:thumbsup2

They will provide you with a pack and play for free. When we used them we were given standard bed linens so you may want to pack a fitted pack and play sheet and blanket.

You'll be fine in a standard room. We've stayed in them with six (one being two at the time), and felt there was just enough room.

Microwave use is complimentary, and it's first come, first serve. We've never NOT been able to get one when we requested it, though.

Happy planning!

Thank you so much for this info! We arrive May 7th and are bringing my parents for their first stay at the Polynesion, so it would be wonderful if it is already finished when we get there!

Yes, but if they keep up with the wristbanding hopefully it will keep the pool hoppers away and the people who are actually staying at the resort can have the pool area to themselves. Pool and beach chairs should be for resort guests only. Play where you pay!!!

ITA!!!
That is one of my favorite things about staying at BC or YC - very strict with wristbands = no pool hoppers!

I hope they are still giving out the wristband in July. That's one of the reasons we rented a cabana for one day, there have been times when we had trouble even getting a seat at the volcano pool!

Wristbands? Where do we get those?:confused3

They have been handing out wristbands to Poly resort guests at the pool for the past couple of months, just like they wristband at the YC/BC. You have to show your resort ID at the pool area to the lifeguard, who then gives you the wristband to prove you are a resort guest. They've been cracking down on the pool hoppers and anyone who isn't a guest is asked to leave.:thumbsup2

Awesome! Works for me! I will be sure to get one in May! :thumbsup2

I agree with you too!! I love that about YC/BC and the system seems to work really well! We wished that they would do that all the times we've stayed at WL because the pool is small to begin with and you know people hop there from other resorts/parks when they come the whole day with their billions of bags! I'll be glad to see wrist bands in June!

I just Loooove this! It wasn't bad in February, but then it was a bit too cool to swim...even though we did! For like 10 minutes!
