ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Tikiman just put a teaser up on his FB page that the next "News" article on his website will be about 'Ohana closing! :scared1: Has anyone else heard anything about this? I would assume it's just for a refurb, but still ... I'm anxious to read what he has to say (he didn't mention when the article would be up).

ETA: Steve added a comment that it isn't forever (read refurb), but he won't spill any other details. I'm hoping they give folks lots of notice. We have two ressies there in December!

Don't worry about 'Ohana folks! Just closing for a refurbishment.

The trip report Steve mentioned in his teaser is mine. He asked me to write for his website when i get back from my trip so be on the lookout for it!

I believe they are closing OHana from 1/17 to 1/20/11 for a quick sprucing up. No worries. They plan to open for dinner on the 20th from what I have heard. :goodvibes

Just read this info (my sis did a search of the restaurant forum & there's a post from August). Thanks for the reassurance! :thumbsup2 DD8 would not be happy if we missed her Stitch breakfast! :stitch:

I had read about the refurb (Allears??) but I think it was only for dinner - I'm pretty sure it wasn't even impacting breakfast. My DD will be starting her 16th birthday celebration at breakfast with Stitch! :goodvibes

If you have a chance I would love to know/see about the current selection of Poly merchandise from Boutiki, especially the art work by Larry Dotson. Thanks and have a great trip. Aloha.

Hi BCV!! If you could report back on the activities schedule. We are only leaving the resort on Thursday AM for an Epcot visit. Other than that it is just resort days.

on this thread with Disney Moms Panel Hopefuls thread! LOL I miss this thread and the people on it, four months and I will be at the Poly again. Great to be back my Poly peeps..

We are going for our first family Disney trip (first time ever staying on property, first time at parks in 15 years) and I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it or not to have a car while at the Poly. We have a preschooler and will be there 7 days in Dec. We are planning several resort dinners (all at other Magic Kingdom resorts, mostly on monorail) and are only visiting Disney parks.

We can get a car fairly cheap (less than $100) since my husband travels a lot and we have rental points. But we will still have to worry about car seat, parking, etc.

My husband will be in Orlando before us, on business, which is what actually prompted this whole Disney trip, and I'm also trying to decide if we DO get a car, if we just have him meet us at the hotel and we (son and I) take Magical Express from airport, so I don't have to mess with our luggage.*

Input from those who have been there on either idea?

I bet you will hear from both sides of the debate, but I will share my opinion.
I have a 2 yr old and a 9 mth old, as well as an 11 year old, so I know what it is like to tote along babies and all their stuff!
We drive from Charleston to Disney. We park our car when we arrive and never get back in it the whole trip. For us, that is something we look forward to. I like to be shuttled around...whether it is on the bus or monorail or boat. To me, it is more work to load up everyone in their carseats. By the time I do all that, the bus would be there and we could just hop on.
Just my opinion, but thought I would share....:goodvibes

If your not planning on leaving Disney property, and all your ressies are in one location (Magic Kingdom) I would not get a car, Its also December and the disney's transportation would not be as crowded. Let Magical Express do all the work and you won't have to worry about luggage or parking and put that extra $100 towards souvenirs. Have a great trip!:wizard:

We drive to Disney, so we always have our car, so I can't speak from the other perspective. But we love having our car!! We drive everywhere the monorail can't take us - so...DHS, AK, DTD, water parks, other non-monorail resorts. I've done the bus just one time, when I sent the kids and DH back to the Poly while I shopped more in DTD. I did NOT enjoy that bus ride back -hot, crowded, long. But I have read here that the DTD-Poly route is one of the worst, so I'm sure the others aren't like that. We like the convenience of being able to leave the parks when we want, without waiting for a bus. Also convenient for hopping around - last year we did AK, then DTD for lunch at EoS before going back to the Poly. It was also convenient when we had strollers, not having to hold them on a bus.

We don't have to pay to rent, though. And I don't know how the car seat thing would work - would you have to pay to rent one? But don't worry about parking costs - there are none if you're a Resort guest.

We don't ever have a car unless we plan on going off property and in that case we just get it for the day. If you don't plan on leaving Disney property you don't need a car. Its your call whether you think you would drive to the parks or take the bus.

In a little over 7 days (7 days, 21 hours but who's counting), we check into the Poly for our first ever CL stay

Bonny & Lee

You will have a great time. My families first CL was this past August at the POLY. Its worth it, everyone does a great job..

We're also fans of having our own car for the reasons above - and more. ME is great to get to the hotel - but IMO 3 hours to get to the airport takes away from Disney time. ITA about having the flexibility to to to DTD. We don't take our car everywhere but there and to AK are musts for us.

We're also ones who insist on having a car while at Disney. We don't do buses, they are just too crowded at certain times for a family of 5 to try to get on and honestly we just enjoy the peace of getting into our own vehicle and winding down the day. We rarely leave Disney property but in getting from the Poly to AK, HS and DTD (not to mention other non monorail resorts) it's just that much easier to drive and be on your own time. For us AK is a 1/2 to 2/3 of a day park and we like to do DTD after, and also like to hit 1 more park or DTD on the way to the airport rather than wait around for ME...

Another perk, if you arrive early and your room isn't ready your luggage and anything you need could be in the car. Of course if your taking ME from the airport and your husband is getting the car it won't help you then, but for others leaving luggage in the car could come in handy if you need a change of clothes or a place to leave your carry ons while you hit a park waiting for your room.

Having a wonderful time getting caught back up on this thread. Did not realize how much I missed it. The family will be heading to Disney in a little over a month...LV CL. Only my daughter knows this, surprising the boys aka my DH, her DH and my DS. They think just a normal little old Poly room. NOPE!!!:rotfl2: Thanks for all the updates and Trip Reports.

I cannot believe we leave for the Poly in less than 2 weeks! I am starting to feel unprepared, even after all this planning. We have all our ADRs set, even with needing to tweak things this past week, and still got everything we wanted, and we have our park days set and Poly time set. My dh is looking forward to time at the Poly...probably even moreso than the parks. We still haven't told our kids that we'll be going to MNSSHP (they don't even know it exists!) and I cannot wait to surprise them with that.

Oh, quick question...We decided to add the park hoppers to our tickets. Is it better to call before we arrive to get this added, or is it better to do it when we arrive?
