ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

There are daybeds and my kids LOVE it! In fact, we have to set a schedule of who gets to use it when (they switch each night) so there is no fighting. I'm not sure about bedrails though - maybe another person knows if they have those? I never used bedrails because the beds aren't that far off the ground. At the Poly, my kids have never fallen out of the beds though.

Thanks for the reply. :) If my lil' girl can make due without her "Peppa Pig" air mattress / bed thing that'd mean more room for souvenirs. Now if it were, say, a Minnie air mattress we'd definitely be stuck taking it with us.

Hi All,

I am busy planning our first deluxe trip, and am thrilled that it is to the Polynesian. We are leaving in 16 days!

I had questions about the bathrooms in Hawaii.

1) They don't have a door from the sink area to the toilet area, do they?
2) Is it ok for me to put up one of those "pressure" curtain rods and a lightweight curtain up as a privacy screen between the sink area and the toilet area? (I looked into using those put on/take off hooks, but worry about the wallpaper.)
3) Does anyone know how large the opening is?
4) Would the resort assign us an accessible room if we don't request it? I am asking this because I believe that the opening to the toilet area would be larger, and probably would not accommodate a pressure rod.

We are two adults and two teenagers, a boy and a girl, and I'm trying to figure out how to give ourselves a little more flexibility with our privacy. Keep everyone a little more happy with each other. I hope!

:thanks:

subbing. We are staying at the Poly in 10 days. It is our first trip. DH is a bit of a coffee snob--so, can someone tell me when Kona Island opens in the morning?

ROOMS FROM $180??????? Sign me up :rotfl:

No kidding!

I just booked my Poly vacation and I had a question about transportation. I know there are several options (monorial, boat, etc.) and was wondering if you can tell me the best way to get to the following places. I requested Tokelau, if it makes a difference.

1. Magic Kingdom Monorail or the launch that goes MK->GF->Poly
2. Epcot Walk to the TTC (Transportation & Ticket Center) and take the Epcot monorail
3. AK Bus
4. DHS Bus
5. DTD Bus--takes FOR-EV-ER! 45 min!!
6. HDDR Launch or monorail to MK, then boat OR monorail to CR, walk out to the boat and take that boat to FW

Also, I read you can walk to the TTC. What exactly is that? Is this not the entrance to Magic Kingdom? TTC is where the monorail and ferry leave from for the MK and the monorail goes from there to Epcot, too.

Sorry, If these are dumb questions, but I would really appreciate a step-by-step to the fastest ways to get around since I will be travelling with twin 2 year old boys.

I think it's a possibility, but a slim one
:thanks:

My replies above, in red!

Penelope's questions got me thinking... Does anyone know if the Hawaii building has showers with the removable shower heads? I find it easier to rinse the kids hair (especially my dd's long hair) if I can get the shower nozzles really close to her, and at 42" tall I'm sure they will be well above her head. :cutie: I suppose I can use a big cup and make do, but would LOVE to have the flexible shower head option.

Do they sell Disney themed Hawaiian shirts in the gift shop? We are going to the Luau, and I am curious if I need to pack my own Hawaiian shirt, or can I buy one at the resort. I saw a couple on LaughingPlace.com, but I wasn't sure if they were what was available in the gift shop.

Thanks in advance.

Not in our room. And I must tell you, I'm 5'8" and had to bend way over backward to rinse my hair--very very frustrating! Why didn't they move the shower heads to an adult's height when they remodeled?? My DD who is 5'4" didn't have any problems, she said.

I saw a few in there--both Disney and non-Disney. They did have matching family outfits on Disneyshopping.com, but maybe they're sold out. Might not hurt to check?

Thanks for the info. I checked out Disneyshopping.com and they only had Up themed shirts. They did have a pretty cool create your own shirt that had an island theme which I may get too.

I can't help with HDDR I would say monorail to MK then the boat to Wilderness but I could be washed up on that one.

We went in May, and Boutiki did have 4 or 5 really cool looking Hawaiian shirts adorned with Mickey, I remember b/c my husband bought one. It's the middle of summer, so I would think they would still have them.

Thanks! I'm 5'4" so at least i know I'll be good, seems like DH though will be complaining by end of the week since he's 6'2". :lmao:

In our experience it has always been Kona blend only by the cup at the Coffee Bar (as it was last December) but things change at WDW all the time. We buy bags of beans every trip (they have 100% Kona and blend beans for sale, they will leave whole or grind for you).

If they grind it for you, then can you use the coffee makers in the room and have your own kona coffee in room instead of trapsing all the way to the GCH?
:confused3

As long as you bring your own small coffee filters. . .the 2-4 cup size. :thumbsup2

1. Magic Kingdom--Monorail in the early a.m. and boat launch or monorail later in the day.
2. Epcot--Walk to TTC and take the direct monorail from TTC. It's much faster than riding around the loop from the Polynesian.
3. AK--The bus from TTC is oftentimes faster than taking the Polynesian bus to AK. The TTC bus goes directly to AK and doesn't stop at other resorts or Blizzard Beach.
4. DHS--You can bus from TTC directly to DHS, but we've not found it that much faster than the bus at the Polynesian.
5. DTD--I HATE the transportation to DTD and since PI closed, we won't even bother going out there. It takes forever to get there and equally long to get back. If you must go--spend the money and catch a cab. You will actually have more time to spend shopping. :)
6. HDDR - Over the years we have found the best option is to monorail to MK and then take the boat from in front of MK to Fort Wilderness. As someone else mentioned, you can also ride the monorail to Contemporary and catch the launch out back of the Contemporary to Fort Wilderness. We have just found the first option to be the quickest. Be sure to allow at least 1.5 hours to get there--you may get lucky and get there early, but on the off chance you don't hit the boats just so, you will want to allow plenty of time.

Also, I read you can walk to the TTC. What exactly is that? Is this not the entrance to Magic Kingdom? The path to TTC exits the east end of the Polynesian and you simply walk through the gates to the monorail. If you take a bus from TTC, you walk across the front toward the gift shop and the buses are located in the parking lot to the east of the gift shop. There are always CMs around, just ask if you are confused.

Hope that helps you out. . .

We want to catch the torch lighting ceremony how long does it last?

We have a 640 pm ressie at Whispering Canyon Cafe. We have a car so we can get there pretty quick if I recall, driving but would we have time to go via boat.

Our plan is leave from the poly (DM and dd's are spening the night here) - to WL for dinner and to BLT TOWL (dh and I only solo night  at BLT) and take the kids and DM back to poly via monorail after, enjoy a few lapu lapu's and head back to BLT for the night via the monorail. It is a MNSSHP night so the monorail goes until 12 am right? if so that rocks !!! I love the not needing to drive. And that will help with the loopy feeling I will get from the lapu lapu ;)

I'm not sure about the boat, we haven't done it. But I think you have to boat to the MK first and then to the WL. The torch lighting is only about 7-10 minutes, but that still might be cutting it close depending on how long you have to wait for a boat. Driving would definitely not be a problem, you'd have plenty of time.

Any advice?

We are thinkin of requesting the Tokelau longhouse.

We are a family of 4. (WIth a 6 and 2 year old). Would this be a good place to request? We are going to request a bottom floor that way they can play right outside the door.

Or any other BETTER ;) Suggestions?

My favorite location!! We actually love this location so much, we were willing to move after the first night last trip. We actually request Tokelau, first floor, east side. This is the side that is NOT facing the quiet pool. This side has the large grassy area right off the patio they can play on. Very quiet location, Central location (not a far walk to anything) and a great place to have 1st floor - no one will be walking right by your patio. We hope to be exactly here next April!

Have we really gone 23 pages without a Tahiti vs Tuvalu debate?

I'll take that as bait...

I'm going to switch out of CL, which do you recommend - Tahiti or Tuvalu? :lmao:

(and no we are not changing!!! but may not do CL for Jan so maybe this is a real question for our bounceback ressie) :rotfl:

No, they are not dumb questions! In fact, as long as you voice it NO QUESTION IS DUMB!

So you are asking the BEST way to get to each spot but what does BEST mean to you? There is a quickest way (or at least it is quick if it isn't broken down, delayed, etc) and there are ways that are most fun (or most fun to each person) and there is the way with the least wait (which no one can predict).

My BEST (shortest wait typically, quickest mode of transportation, and most fun to me):

MK - Take monorail from the Great Ceremonial House
EP - Walk to the TTC (Ticket & Transportation Center) and take the monorail
AK & HS - Take the bus (but I hear that taking it from TTC might be quicker although I've only taken it from the Poly)
DTD - Taxi....take a taxi....the bus takes FOREVER... (Okay, that's a tip to myself because I can't believe how many times I think that this time it won't be so bad)
HDDR - What's this?

I know you've had quite a few responses but I'll just remind you of this...For those that like the sinks outside of the toilet/shower area, you end up waking up people that are sleeping or trying to sleep while you get up early and brush your teeth. So I personally like the sink inside the bathroom area and that is how the Poly is situated. I'm sure you could put a pressure rod in the bathroom but that only covers you, not the sound. I recommend setting times when everyone uses it. For instance, I get up early and use the bathroom then get breakfast ready while my husband gets ready, then the kids get ready. In the afternoon, I leave the pool area about 15 minutes prior to the rest of the family so I can get in the shower first. They duke it out for the rest of the time :)

I'll take that as bait...

I don't know whether or not they'd assign an accessible room if it's not requested, and I don't know the exact layout of all of the accessible rooms, but the room that we were in, in the Hawaii building, would not accomodate a tension rod in the bathroom because it's one large room with no divider.
