ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Packing, scrambling... this time tomorrow: nothin' but aloha. :goodvibes

Enjoy! I am jealous...but can finally post that we are doing the double-digit dance:banana::banana:! You will be there for my b-day so please have a cocktail for me! My favorite is the Banana Cabana if you care to try.

I just knew there had to be someone posting on this thread. I haven't received an e-mail notification of posts for well over 24 hours now. The DIS must be having issues again--it happens to me periodically and then WHAM! A zillion notifications all at once.

Anyone else having issues?

BTW, have fun those leaving this weekend! I have 41 more days until F&W, but not at the Polynesian. :guilty:

I turned off email notifications because they weren't reliable. I would have the same issue - I'd get tons of emails, then none, then wham!

Has anyone gone to the Poly and just left your room request up to chance? I have pros and cons for each building, so I'm so unsure which to choose. Maybe I just should leave it to the CMs and stop worrying about it??

The couple of times we've stayed GV we just "winged it" so to speak - both times we ended up in Tahiti (which we love)

This is a great thread. I'm staying at the Poly in December for 2 days and I can't wait.

What do you guys think about Capt. Cook's? This will be our first stay at the Poly and we've never eaten here. Is it as bad a some people say? I'm sure we'll end up eating here at least once or twice during our stay and I wanted to get some opinions about the place :)

TIA :flower3:

I'll let you know what we think. We're planning on checking it out for lunch and dinner at least once, more than likely a few times. Everyone in the family but me likes things plain Jane, I like a little flavor to my food, so can "review" from both perspectives.

We were at the Poly last October and liked CC's. DH really enjoyed the noodle bowl and I had the turkey club which was pretty good. Of course Dole whips for dessert was a bonus. :thumbsup2 We also ate breakfast there and had no complaints.

I don't think it is bad at all! First, keep in mind that it IS quick service. And just know what you need to do - use the monitors for any hot food orders. You can make special requests as well on here so take your time and make your order the way you want it. Then go and get your cold items (grab & go). Purchase your items, get your pager, wait for your pager to go off for your hot food.

I like getting a mickey waffle with bacon in the morning. You can also try Tonga Toast here (too sweet for me but it was neat to try it). And you can get your eggs and bacon meals as well (and a good kids meal too!!). For lunch/dinner, I LOVE the grown up grilled cheese with assorted polynesian chips - YUM!!! And you can get a dole whip if you so desire. It's not bad here at all.

And I have always found plenty of seating (turnaround is quick and lots of umbrella tables outside). Even during the BUSIEST times, the lines might get a little long but nothing that is excessive. It's not the biggest space for LOTS of people so just realize that, don't push, and have a friendly smile - people will appreciate it.

dizneechic: that was a great diagram of Hawaii's rooms. Do you happen to know if there are similar diagrams for the other longhouses? I'm particularly interested in Tahiti if there is one. Tnx!

I always take restaurant opinions/reviews with a grain of salt. First, because I may have different tastes than the other person. Second, it's really just a snapshot ~ maybe the cook was having a bad day or someone blew off their shift. Third, because who knows what will be the same or different when we get there. Fourth, maybe they got slammed with people all at once, that's what we went through when we ate lunch there.

We enjoyed ourselves at Captain Cook's in July. We at there twice even though we were staying at Kidani. My husband really likes the tonga toast ~ and some people don't. We had lunch there, it was good. Everyone was happy, I liked my sandwich and the slaw they served with it. We did have to wait a while at lunch. It was busy.

What things about previous reviews bothered you? That might help me help you in relation to anything specific that is giving you second thoughts.

Whew, just had a lot of pages to read! Now that I'm two weeks away from our very first Poly stay, I can't get enough of this thread!
We have a GV room, though I kinda wish I had splurged for CL... but that is just something to look forward to for our next Poly stay, right?

You've sold me! Happy birthday drinks will be hoisted!

Have fun!!! Please post a review - maybe a pic or two :) - when you return.

Will do!

Thanks all!

The maps are on tikiman's site under longhouses. Here's the link to all of the longhouses and once you click on your particular longhouse you select the floorplan link under the picture. :thumbsup2 Here's Tahiti's for you. :goodvibes

Morning everyone!

Thanks for that very detailed review Penelope2000!

Question.. does the Poly have the channel that plays the old disney cartoons? I remember having it one yr at ASMo & POR but I havent seen it in quite some time, I was tell DH about it and he was saying he would love to see it.

Channel 96! We had it on during our WHOLE trip!!!

For counter service I think it is the best of all the monorail hotels.... I love the flat bread (pizza), I've had the cheese, peperoni and the hawaiian (sans ham). The salads are great and the adult grilled cheese is to DIE FOR!!!:thumbsup2

Thanks for all the replies about CC's! :thumbsup2 I can't wait to try the tonga toast and I know we will love the Dole whips :lovestruc

I'm not sure exactly, :confused3 it just seemed like whenever I read about the place (especially from reviews at TripAdvisor, which I know isn't the best place to read reviews since there seems to be a lot of negativity LOL) people seemed to not like CC's very much. I think they mentioned it was crowded and the food was not good. Some people said they thought it was dirty and the ordering system was confusing.

I figured I'd get a good response from the peeps here on the Poly thread, and I did :cutie:

If you aren't detail-oriented (or follow directions well) or aren't familiar with the system, I can see where it could be confusing. Some of the food is so-so, but a lot of it is YUMMY!!! I'd been trying to get over in the morning for Tonga Toast on our last few trips, but I haven't been able. I will be skipping the lounge at least once in favor of CC for that!!!
